EDIT3: Final rosters as of Monday, Sept. 3.

Guess what starts tonight? All times Oklahoma time:

Redskins @ Bills 6:30 p.m.
Ravens @ Falcons 6:30 p.m.
Saints @ Pats 6:30 p.m.
Steelers @ Eagles 6:30 p.m.
Packers @ Chargers 7:30 p.m. (televised nationally on ESPN)
Broncos @ Bears 7:30 p.m.

They are also doing roundabout coverage (not sure if that is like that NFL Redzone channel or not) on the NFL network all night.

Ronnell Lewis is gonna make his NFL (preseason) debut tonight. And for our resident Poke fans, your Old Man Weeden might take a few snaps before his back snaps and he needs to return to the retirement village with Bill Snyder :stunned:

:P Yes, it is funny that two old farts like Weeden and Snyder are both not retired, hehe

I didn't watch the entire Broncos/Bears game, so I didn't see Beal play at all (although he was playing some special teams). I also don't recall seeing Carter at safety last night, be he may have. Not too concerned with Carter as I think he's a shoe-in for the 53 man.

Cameron Kenny didn't get into the game until the 4th quarter, but had a really nice 15 yard catch. Unfortunately, some boob was called for holding and the play came back, but the announcer even said "that was a really nice catch for Kenny, even though it won't show up in the stats, the coaches will notice that".

I forgot how boring preseason football is. Also, I was able to use the word boob in this post. So, that's a bonus.

Thanks for the update. Wanted to see how Broyles would do with the new knee... must have missed it???

http://www.wxyz.com/dpp/sports/football/lions/avril-broyles-leshoure-to-miss-lions-preseason-opener

DETROIT - Cliff Avril said all week it would be up to head coach Jim Schwartz whether or not he would play in the team's preseason opener against Cleveland.

As most expected, Schwartz and the Lions have declared Avril out of Friday's game.

Wide receiver Ryan Broyles, safties Don Carey and Louis Delmas, running back Mikel Leshoure, defensive tackle Sammie Hill, offensive tackle Jonathan Scott, and defensive end Kyle Vanden Bosch will also be inactive.
Running back Jahvid Best and rookie cornerback Chris Greenwood remain on the PUP list, and will sit out, as well.

Avril returned to the Lions Sunday, signing his one-year, $10.6 million franchise tender. He had to sit out three practices under league rules, before hitting the field in full pads.

Broyles is recovering from a torn ACL suffered in his final season at Oklahoma. The second-round draft pick has been in and out of Lions practice, but the team has been pleased with his overall progress.

With Leshoure and Best sidelined, Kevin Smith will start at running back. Smith said earlier in the week he wouldn't be worrying about anyone else, and would simply be focusing on himself.

I think they have made it obvious that they think Sam can get it done without any decent receivers. Or they just don't GAS.

Or a decent line protecting him

1- Sam receives snap.
2- Swiss cheese line lets all defenders blitz
3- Sam throws to open receiver (since blitz = open receivers)
4- Open receiver lets perfectly thrown ball bounce off both hands.
5- Sam gets hit late by blitzing defense
6- Replacement refs do not call "personal foul" penalty.

Rinse, repeat and regurgitate. Bleggh

Lo and behold, even though he still has his player page up at the Bucs' official site, he is not on the active roster. I checked his Wikipedia page and it said that he signed with Dallas at one point, but is not currently on their roster, either. I guess he's outta the league?

The Rams are a mess. They draft for the defense, need an offensive line in the worst kind of way. Their coaches say the strategy this year will be to grind it out on the ground, take the pressure off Sammie. How are they going to do this with their offensive line and who do they have beyond Jackson? Once again we have to hope Sammie survives the onslaught and doesn't get concussed out of the business. Fisher seems to be a run of the mill serviceable coach, not one to inspire greatness. I hope the next few weeks prove me wrong.....

If I owned a team, I would probably hire a GM to be responsible for coaching decisions, as I would never want to be a Jerry Jones/Al Davis type. Plus, it's easier to fire a GM than it is to fire an owner, so the blame could lie with the GM for bad coaching hires, rather than the owner :)

I saw Jermaine try to get a few extra yards after catch last night when the Browns visited Atlanta, but he seemed to get his leg twisted on the way down, so I don't think I saw him in after that. The Browns just signed Donald Lee, a former Packer tight end, so they may be trying to copy the Patriots two-TE offense. We'll see.

I also saw Dom Franks back on a punt return. I guess he'll be one of their their return guys this year?

Sooner Broncos - Looking more and more like Jeremy Beal will make the 53 man roster. He played a lot last night, and came in with the second team. He had two tackles (one TFL). Has definitely put on some mass.

Quinton Carter still recovering from minor knee scope, and should still make the 53 man (although his starting job may be in jeopardy).

No news on the Sooner NFL front... but you know how Colt McCoy's been struggling with the whole pro career thing compared with his relatively easy life in Austin throwing to Jordan Shipley?

Well, Jordan's pro career took a swerve this week also. Cut by Cincy, and now signed by Tampa off waivers. Linky. (http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap1000000052402/article/buccaneers-claim-jordan-shipley-whom-bengals-cut) Injuries got the best of him last season, which coincidentally enough, got him Jason White-like eligibility tenure in college.

Reggie recorded an INT on what was (no surprise) a terrible throw by Tim Tebow.

With Nelson and Smith playing the same position, it would look like one of them would make the team and the other would likely be cut.

Frank, by all accounts has had a strong preseason, and has made an impact in the first few preseason games. I'd imagine he'll see some significant playing time this year for them. Also helps that Carolina runs a base 4-3 defense, where Frank can play the more traditional DE position.

That was Reggie that caught that?! SCORE!!!!!!!!

For those of you that missed this morning's sportscenter, here's basically how they showed Tebow:

1: Tebow runs for a first down, scrambling to avoid tackles and keeping the drive alive. Does he act all humble and ready to command a huddle? Not exactly...

I thought it was weird at first too, but that's how the Associated Press captioned the photo. And since JJ is a longshot to make an NFL roster, I figured that he was moving all around the field to do whatever was necessary.

But now that you mention it, that's probably 48, not 49. Ah well.

Reggie also made the tackle at the end of T-Bone's 20 yard scramble.

Not exactly...
http://media.nj.com/jets_impact/photo/11484384-large.jpg
^^^no joke, he was celebrating a stupid first down. a preseason first down on a meaningless drive. gag.
2. The Reggie Smith interception.

I can't find an image of that, so here is Joe Jon Finley (No. 49) tackling Tebow.
http://binaryapi.ap.org/0c7eb26664c54ecdbc0b9cd7ec538b74/460x.jpg

Is it just me, or did they error his shoulder number (looks like 48). Eh, looks like he might not make the final roster :(

The number thing on his jersey looks like a funny wrinkle in the front, so the 8 looks like a 9.

I know that this is "SOONERS in the nfl," but I thought you all would be interested to know that Vince Young was cut by the Bills. They cut him after getting his overrated mid-major clone, Tavaris Jackson.

No surprise there, even if I'm eternally optimistic for Sooners' pro chances.

There just isn't a market out there for good college players in the pros. You either need a "who you know" tie or be d@mn good (and not a troublemaker). Get your college educations while you can, guys!

That's a little surprising. I guess they saw too much promise from the UDFA Hicks and went for the upside. My guess is Remi won't be sitting out the season. As injuries start taking their toll he'll get picked up.

Remi was a very sharp-dressed Sooner at a Red-White game where he graciously signed a ball that I was getting for a friend. (and no, that friend was not named "ebay," hehe). I hope he gets to retire on his own terms, not just because a team cuts him loose.

I wonder if he has to serve it if a team doesn't sign him till week 5. It seems like a huge drag to get picked up, otherwise.

On the good news side of things, I think we have four Carolina Sooners (Jonathan Nelson, Reggie Smith, Frank Alexander, Joe Jon Finley). And I didn't see any of them on the waiver wire that just got updated. Congrats, guys! Hope you all make the final roster!

In a different suspension case, I thought I heard it stated the suspension was in effect even if the players was not under contract. If that's correct in general, Eldridge could play starting in game 5 regardless. That would seem only fair or that suspension could scuttle a journeyman's career.

The only one I know that fell into that category was a Something Quin(n?) that "played" for the Dolphins when Josh H. was drafted. He was a family friend of Chan Gailey and had a job for years as his pi$$ boy. IIRC he was a highly paid career clipboard holder. Do you know of any others?

Everything that I have read has stated that Peterson is should be to be ready for the season opener, he has been practicing but Frazier has held him out of pre-season games. I have not seen anything about him being placed on the PUP list as of yet.

I am checking the waiver wire and here's something of note outta DC:

Jammal Brown (T) Placed on the physically unable to perform list (hip).

Korey Bosworth, who I think is the Boz's nephew, was cut by Oakland.

If I'm not mistaken, rosters must be down from 75 (yesterday) to 53 by Friday. So, expect tons more cuts. Hopefully OU players will not be among them.

Might be a candidate for practice squaddin'

They (STEP can correct me if wrong) usually keep marginal players after the first round of cuts if they want to see them in the final preseason game. Iggy might still have a chance!

Even if they've gotten free college educations, millions in salary (or at least hundreds of thousands) and are blessed with talent that many men would kill to be have, it is about to be a very sad time for many Sooners.

tarting Tuesday, there will be big money thrown around in the NFL. Free agents coming to new towns with bonus checks in hand. But for the guys that are let go, only a quick phone call and a carbon copy dismissal.

An experience I know plenty about.

As each NFL team must make its final cuts to reach the roster limit of 53, some players learned their fate on Friday. All will know by 6 p.m. ET on Saturday. It can be a time for NFL teams to take cover.

"When I was coach in Tampa," recalls Indianapolis coach Tony Dungy, "we had a player we let go. We get a call from a pawn shop owner who recognized the player and said that he was in the shop upset and wanting to purchase a gun. He wasn't coming after me. He was coming after his position coach."

That position coach was then-Bucs linebackers coach Lovie Smith.

"He was my player," said Smith, now the Bears coach. "I heard the guy was at the pawn shop. We had security in my yard that night. It was serious. Once you've been through a situation like that ..."
