I'm a bit more of a Hayek (Road to Serfdom) fan but Friedman was a genius for sure.

There are two Friedman's. One was the respected economic theorist who wrote technical, "mostly apolitical analyses" of consumer behavior and inflation. His work on the consumptive behavior of man is considered excellent work as is his work on the relationship between inflation and unemployment. As an academic, he was known for restraint.
The second, and not as respected, is Friedman the free market propagandist. There's a lot of apathy about his policy pronouncements and popularizing, and some of his ideas are considered outlandish even by conservatives. Basically, his reputation as a peer reviewed academic is very different from his reputation as a public, propagandizing intellectual.
