View Full Version : Primer on living in the US

7/16/2012, 02:24 AM
I finally moved back home after living more than half of my life overseas. I'm trying to figure out how to get along with Americans again.

My mom was very clear about one thing. I couldn't wear my President Obama re-election t-shirts without the threat of physical harm, mainly from my own family.

I guess that means that my plan to put a "re-elect President Obama" sign on my property (one mile on one side of US Hwy 70) is totally out of the question, unless I want to camp out under that sign on my own land.

I'm still clear that I won't stay in a room with a Fox news right-wing propaganda broadcast.

But that is not covering it at all. Our culture has changed so radically.

I don't even qualify for a credit card and then I have a debit card but I have so much money in there that it is insane to leave it open.

What the hell happened while I was gone?

Hope and Change happened Bro
Get ya a Pre Paid credit card

Or just put a small amount in a different Checkin account and use the debit card for that .

AS far as the Obammy stuff goes? Dont get in to a big deal with yer Family over it . He aint gonna win Oklahoma any way

rock on sooner
7/16/2012, 07:03 AM
Chuck, Vet's right about the small amount in a separate account. Banks don't
squat on cd's. Go to a credit union (shop on line for rates) Use a "ladder format
for cd's..certain amounts (you pick) to mature at regular intervals, e.g. one a year
for five years. After a while with the credit union you'll be able to get a credit card.
Lease a car, if needed, be diligent with payments. Don't bounce any checks, etc.
and you'll establish yourself quickly.

True dat, Obama won't win in Okie land...state is so red it's crimson! Boomer!

Welcome back!

Many of the old Republicans have died off, or been pushed aside by the new generation: a blend of dems and pubs that won't tolerate the east coast battle against religion.

So now there aren't many politicians committed to minimal government. Too many people now dependent on government help.

Welcome home George. I go by your place a lot on the way to Texoma. Not sure which place it is though.

If you really wanna get on well with your neighbors, do like my neighbor did. He has a big-assed sign propped against his fence on Highway 39 East of Lexington. It says something like "If you voted for Obama in 2008 to prove you aren't a racist, please don't vote for him in 2012 to prove you're stupid."

All the neighbors like him.

Welcome to 'homeland shock' my friend. It lasts a while. I'm still going through it and I've been back for 4+ years.
When you're gone, you tend to reduce 'home' to simple, broad strokes and to the basics of what you believe in. And then you come back and find out that there are some people who are effing morons and that everyone is a full fledged person with all the differences in opinions that entails.
Plus you have to come to grips with the fact that, although this is by far and away the world's best attempt so far at the concept of 'country', there are many things here that are so jaw droppingly stupid that you just stand there wondering how we could have gotten it so wrong. (Health care is one. And no, I'm not pimping for Obamacare, I'm talking about the idiotic 'system' we have in which you have a primary care doc who directs you to first one and then another 'specialist' so that each and every member of the medical profession can collect from your insurance carrier.) Don't lets get started on weights and measures that make those used in medieval Mongolia look organized and logical by comparison.
You've no doubt noted that whisky can NOT be procured in 7-11's.
Don't even think about trying to build in the downtown region of any town or city.
And, keep in mind, the world ends at the borders of the continental USofA. We are not quite sure of those Hai-wayans. Not yet, anyway. Give it time. Why'd you want to go there, anyway?
Smile, nod and keep moving. Dress in the manner of the locals. Sarongs to Walmart are likely going to attract unwanted attention...and perhaps a beating on general principle.
Drinking a lot helps, too.
Welcome home.

You should totally put your Obama for President sign up. Make it up as part of a little monument to the few remaining Democrats in the state and people will stop to take pictures with it, heh.

Or, you could just wake up one morning and find the entire thing vandalized or missing.

Welcome home. Start hating Baylor immediately. :P

Thanks everyone for your input and ideas. I do listen and I do learn.

I already bashed heads with my mom, sis and brother. Their point is that President Obama didn't achieve much except for ObamaCare, which thy oppose. They all agree that something should be done about the runaway health care costs, but are unsure what they would be. Their other point is that President Obama appointed some really bad cabinet ministers. I have to agree with his choice of Secretary of the Treasury and how Timothy Geithner just protects his Wall Street cronies and how Wall Street is bad for America. That is the major reason why I believe that Occupy Wall Street should be heard. In this regard, I just don't think Republicans are any better. Sad really.

After living overseas, have any perspective of this?

I agree that it is a "big ****ing deal" to pass such legislation, I just wonder why they had to put everything else (like jobs) on hold to get it done.

Sorry.....I learned a long time ago to not talk politics with family and friends.......which is why I use SFs.

Anyone I work or live around would probably assume I am as apolitical as one can be........that's just because I believe mixing politics with family outings or friendly get-togethers provides nothing positive.

Where did I say it was a redneck backwoods? Nor do I doubt you are friends with Chuck. But on the other hand Oklahoma has Sally Kern in the legislature and it was only in 2003 that same sex couples were legal in Oklahoma as a result of a SCOTUS ruling. In 2004 you guys banned gay marriage which was approved by voter referendum. Oklahoma also...as far as I know does not ban discrimination based on sexual orientation.

There are no doubt areas in Oklahoma that are friendly to gays like Norman. And there are no doubt lots of people like yourself who have a live let live philosophy. But until Oklahoma and many other states for that matter get rid of the hard right Christian conservative politicians who have a defined bigotry against gays then I would say that there are only a few states that are gay friendly.

Just to be clear I believe gays should be given full equal rights including marriage and protection against discrimination.

BTW I did not question Chucks judgement but asked a question on why he lives in Oklahoma given his sexual orientation.

From the Oklahoma Republican Party preemble

. F. General
1. We oppose the promotion of homosexuality, the elimination of laws against sodomy, and the granting of minority protection or special status to any person based upon sexual preference or lifestyle choices.
2. We believe that homosexuality is not a genetic trait but a chosen lifestyle.

And

.9. We oppose the portrayal of homosexual or promiscuous behavior in a positive light in public schools.

There ya go! Some of em prolly have been on weed, loco and otherwise. Why did you move back to Oklahoma? I would think that would be the last place a gay man would want to live.

I did notice that this discussion subsequently went way out of bounds unnecessarily.

Diver, I am returning to my home. I would never let myself be defined by being gay. I am actually more of a farmer (son of the land) at heart. I think a lot of posters here have said over the last several years that it doesn't really matter, just don't make a big deal about it. And, that's my sentiments as well.

Like Olevet has taken the time to stick up for me, I have many friends and family that will as well. If there are any bigots around, I don't really care.

Being gay doesn't preclude me from driving a tractor and feeling very comfortable with that.

Yeah, I have sown my wild oats and been there and done that.

I just don't see the need to run away from home to California, after spending half of my life on the other side of the world. That would be pretty dumb in my opinion when I'm happiest when I'm home.

There is culture shock and dealing with some completely different political leanings. On the positive side, that's not at all important in my sports mad family. My brother has tix to the UTEP game in El Paso and wants me to fly there with him for that game.

He didn't get any TCU tix, though. We may have to buy online or from scalpers.

Vet:

That is not a fair statement. Where in any of this discussion did I say all okies are bigots or racist? I am pretty sure I limited the bigot part to politicians in Oklahoma who follow their platform and made points about Oklahoma laws. Not once did I call you a bigot or a racist.

Vet i am also equally scathing about where I live. The southern part of Delaware and the lower part of the Delmarva Pennisula is the most racist place I have ever been. That is saying a lot because we lived in Alabama when Bull Connor was running wild. The NY Times called our lower county the most northern county in Mississippi. I hate bigotry and racism.

Well just for the record California voted to ban gay marriage just 2 years ago.

I know. Delaware did the same although we recognize civil unions. Delaware has a resort called Rehoboth Beach that is one of the largest gay resorts on the East Coast. It is a super nice town with a lot of great things to do. When I sold commercial insurance most of my clients were either gay or catered to gay visitors because it was so lucrative. The amount of money down there is obscene.

My suspicions are we will allow gay marriage in the next ten years. As it stands now gay couples in Delaware through civil union have all the rights of married couples except that little piece of paper.

I can't speak for everywhere in the state, but I do know of a small town in NE OK that has a gay couple running it. One guy is mayor and owns the general store, his partner is the town cop and capt of the volunteer fire dept. And the town keeps electing/selecting both to their posts and all is well.
And probably the largest building in town is the Baptist church.
All may not be what it might appear to be here in the unenlightened hinterland.

While I did not see evidence that Oklahoma is a destination for vacationing Gays, i was happy to read there are very robust Gay communities in OKC, Norman and Tulsa. The funny/weird/cool thing about the place though was watching it evolve. The last time I went in there before they closed down there were bikers, blacks, hispanics, gays, rednecks, business-suited dweebs, skanky hos, classy broads, and even a couple of those youngsters with the died black hair and facial piercings. When I walked in the juke box was blasting Highway to Hell. Next song? On the Road Again, followed by Play that Funky Music Whiteboy. That's what I'm talking about. As long as the discussion has turned to gay pride, fun little story...

Last year, Tulsa's Equality Center became the first of it's kind in the country to be entirely debt-free. Alas, this meant that they had to scrimp the budget of the Gay Pride festivities, and so they just had the parade between events at our annual biking competition ("Tulsa Tough").

NP and I journeyed down to downtown to watch the pro bikers and saw "parade" in the schedule. We had no idea that it was the Gay Pride parade. There was a rainbow flag up across the street, but we figured it was just because it was known to be a gay-catering restaurant/bar.

Lo and behold, the rainbow flags were marching down the biker route. They tossed beads, the local American Airlines workers waved to people and gave candy to kids, one of the Episcopal churches (St. Jerome's I think) had it's choir on a float, several groups of roller skate teams ran through... you name it.

I remember one of the paraders disappointed a kid by not letting him have beads from her. She whispered to his mommy "It has a condom on the end." lol.

The end of the parade was the very best part though. This old Ghostbusters-like vehicle labeled "Hate Busters" wheeled on through... and broke down right at the end of the parade route. So, what do they do to clear the road? The roller skate team behind them pushes the car on ahead. Some of them were quite buff girls who could have probably pushed the car themselves.

So, yeah, Tulsa has an out and proud gay community. But, if you don't really look for it, you probably wouldn't notice it at the same time. It's there if you want it to be there, it's hidden if you don't want to see it. Make sense?

Epilogue: After DADT was repealed, Tulsa's debt-free Equality Center hosted military recruiters for the first time. They reportedly even got someone to check into enlisting in the Marines.

Glad to see that you're back StoopTroup. I have many more issues that I need your advice. Besides that, which OU games are you going to and where are we going to meet up?

All of them, Lord willing.

As far as where to meet up...there are plenty of options.

There's no way I could ever put together a TG to replace Dean and Lisa's TGs. What they did every year took lots of work and commitment from the many folks who recognized what special people they are and that even though they could do it alone....they shouldn't of had to do it alone. Over the years I was apart of that I saw quite a few folks who understood what I am trying to say and they pitched in in so many different ways that it became something very special and something my Family will never forget.

That said, I made my way to OU games since 1973 and just because The SoonerFan TGs Dean and Lisa did are gone, the event that is OU Football every year is not gone. I so hope that Dean and Lisa are now able to do like I have for years and just get in their car drive to the games and enjoy them without having to worry about all the things that they unselfishly took on during Home Games each and every year.

Due to my limited mobility now it will be an ordeal for me to attend the games this year but my Family has always understood what going to OU Games means to me and even when I considered selling our Season Tickets this year and just watching from Home....they all said "No Way!".

We will probably go early 4 hours at the very least, find Parking near Campus Corner and enjoy the festivities and Resaurants that have been there for years and make our way down Asp Avenue past a few Friends TGs. There is usually some tables and chairs and even a BBQ and Pizza Vendor there where we have hung out a few times and when it's hot, Price Hall is a nice place to hang out and surf the Internet and watch games online and check scores until game time.

So...unless there is something else fun to checkout we will probably just wing it as we have many times before.

I love the Greek House and would eat there every Game Day if it was always my choice so I'd expect that it's a pretty good bet that I will be there a few times this year.

In 2004 you guys banned gay marriage which was approved by voter referendum. Oklahoma also...as far as I know does not ban discrimination based on sexual orientation.

Didn't the enlightened folks of California vote to ban gay marriage much more recently? Is San Francisco anti-gay?

There's a map denoting state laws here. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Same-sex_marriage_in_the_United_States) Cali is a state that has unions granting rights similar to marriage, but also a ban on same-sex marriage. There are similar laws all on the west coast. So much for uber liberals, eh?

One of my dad's cousins visited my mom today and brought her four teenage grandchildren with her. Those teenagers wanted water, so I got out four Red Solo plastic cups and the ice receptacle out of the freezer and told them to just grab their own ice. Then, they asked me: "Where is the water?"

Huh? We were in the kitchen. I pointed to the faucet over the kitchen sink and said "water, over there".

Really?!!??? Kids in the US today expect bottled or mineral water? Or, is there something really wrong with our water?

Tulsa is now adding ammonia to our water - kills fish, but hey, it's not harmful to us humans.:mask:
