View Full Version : 2012 CFB Uniform Changes (NEW: Oregon helmet first look)

This is my 2nd annual college football uniform update…last year, I did it later in the season and in blog-fashion. Since that seems to be an underused feature of SF.com, I’ll post it here so that other uniform nerds, like me, can read it.

Last year we saw the continued Nike “Pro-combat” line, the Under Armor Maryland “Pride” uniform and the continued use of camouflage and black. It doesn’t look like we’ll be seeing less of that this year.

So far, several teams have announced major changes to their uniforms. First up, the former Big XII school Missouri. Major changes to both helmet design (loss of the traditional “M”) and overall uniform.

2662

Out with one school in the Big XII, in with a new member, TCU. TCU has changed their helmet several times over the past few years, but this year brings a new helmet and uniform.

2663

Another former Big XII team, Nebraska will change their traditional uniform for one game in 2012. No images have been released, but Husker AD Tom Osborne said it will “shock some long-time fans, but not be too over the edge”. They will be "Futuristic", what does that even mean?!

(No images released) LINK (http://www.omaha.com/article/20120402/BIGRED/704039991) to story

And to round out the former/current Big XII…and it shouldn’t come as a big surprise…Coach Gundy has displayed a potential fourth helmet for little brother (flat orange). No confirmation whether these will ever see the field, but I’m betting they will.

Now, onto some other conferences.

Rutgers has unveiled a completely new set of uniforms complete with a mirror finished helmet. I didn’t think there was anything wrong with the uniforms they had, but here are the new ones.

2664

BYU hasn’t changed their uniform in a long time (with the exception of the failed attempt at a combo home/away uniform], but it looks like they are joining the flat black band wagon in 2012. (No official confirmation that these will see the field in 2012)

2665

Not so much of a new uniform, but Houston has ditched the cross-eyed cougar in favor of this cookie cutter logo and a new beveled interlocking UH. (New logo on the right)

2666

More to come...

Add Arkansas to the list of teams with a black uniform…and a white helmet. These were chosen by former coach Petrino and sounds like Coach Smith will use them.

2667

The Domers got shiny new gold helmets last year, and this year they got new “Irish” cleats for their game against Navy.

2668

Left out another Big XII team, West Virginia. They will add a grey alternative for 2012.

2669

There will be more to come (with Nike revealing their Pro Combat line in the coming weeks), so I'll update the thread as warranted.

let's not forget Nebrasky wore some horrible Tron type crap in 00 or 01 or 02.

Arkansas, for a team whose look we kinda copped when we went to the crimson helmet......sure change a lot. like the pig logo, but not all the other garbage looks.

While I'm a traditionalist, I don't mind the changes that Mizzou made to their helmets. They're probably wanting to usher in a new era of non-pussitude, so I can't say I blame them.

Awful. Just awful. Not surprised by Arkansas since Petrino never had even the foggiest idea about tradition or loyalty.

New additions (7/12/12)

Yesterday, Vanderbilt unveiled their newest combination of uniforms (from Nike). No surprise, they are also going with three different helmets. Personally, I really like these.

2670

Southern Miss will be wearing a throwback uni this year (although I'm not sure if it's for the entire season, or just a game):

2671

Iowa will also wear a throwback uni this year (for only one game):

2673

Syracuse is going with a new metallic orange helmet this season:

2672

Texas A&M will be revealing their new football unis sometime today. I can't imagine that they did much to them (besides adding a giant SEC patch), but I'll post images of them once they are available.

I am a traditionalist and do no want OU's uniforms deeked around with. However, there are a few scenarios for which I could accept some one-time-only changes. For instance, I loved the hell out of the time we wore the throw-backs during the Jason White era. Those were brilliant and simply paid homage to our history and heritage.

Here's a few possibilities:

1. The fortieth anniversary of the 1974 and 1975 national titles are coming up. Wear a throwback ensemble to commemorate those teams.

2. Even better, uniform-wise, the 30th anniversary of the 1985 national champs is coming up. How sick would it be to see a return of the fishnet uniforms:

http://cdn.bleacherreport.net/images_root/slides/photos/001/786/443/281526_display_image.jpg?1326253022

3. The 20th anniversary of the Murrah disaster is coming up. For this solemn occasion I could see using a black uniform, which would then be sold for a victims fund or some such.

4. As much as we'd hate to think of it, the King won't be with us forever. A special black uniform to honor him could be done, and like the one above, sold to establish some sort of memorial scholarship in his honor.

Those possibilities aside, I hope we don't give in to all this trendy, hip nonsense.

We have tradition. We're Oklahoma.

The only ones in a uniform to honor him should be the coaching staff. Break out the crimson polyester pants an snug-fitting polyester white top with Barry embroidered in script:

NOOOOOO. BV wore crimson pants against TT last year. At first I thought it was a great idea, then I hoped he burned them after the game (which he may have...they never made another appearance).

I think it would be cool if Stoops came out in one of those shiny polyester jackets that the King used to wear on the sidelines (while he smoked).

I've gone back and forth about whether or not we should make any changes. Finally, I've just given in to the historical consistency of our uniforms and decided no change is really needed.

All of the uniform changes you see are usually for teams that don't really have a successful tradition in place. That's why OU, Alabama, Notre Dame, USC, etc. still wear the same uni. However, I am never opposed to a special uni once in a while. I liked the Nike Pro Combat unis we wore a few years back (the white throwbacks), although I think we lost to Tech in those.

Right now, the big changes you see are more about teams looking for a recruiting edge, and don't have it on the field.

State's unis weren't so bad back in Rocky Felker days ('70's). Pants were a lot like Bama's (white with two red stripes) and the helmets had "MS" on the side.

Nebraska's alternate unis are horrible.

Penn State uni change? (http://sports.yahoo.com/news/ncaaf--fbc-penn-state-uniform-change.html)

There is perhaps only one thing more iconic about Penn State football than Joe Paterno.

The uniforms.

They are blue and white, austere and arguably the most identifiable in the sport.

But after the recent conviction of former assistant coach Jerry Sandusky on sexual assault charges and the severe NCAA sanctions that followed this month, those uniforms mean something different than they have for so many years. And that's why they may be changing.

If they aren't revolting... well, they should be.

"Verge" of irrelavance. No I'd say this feeble attempt is a strong indication they are mired in irrelavance.

I wish I could say I feel bad for them, but I don't. Osborne in all his smugness and holier-than-thou arrogance had it coming.

P.S. With the new uni they have even altered the red from scarlet to "cherry". I hope Wisconsin gives them a genuine beat-down when they wear these abortions.

If you watch the video, you get the whole picture. And, I agree, it's awful.

I have a friend that's a die-hard Husker, and he tried to tell me they were great. He said "we've (the fans) been wanting something to pay tribute to the black shirts for a long time, and this is it!". I laughed. Pay tribute to the black shirts (who are mediocre, at best) by wearing all red? That's Husker logic.

And Phil's right, Devaney is spinning like a top in his grave. Nebraska was one of the few teams left that stuck to tradition when it came to uniforms. With this, they have officially arrived on the "We need all the help we can get with recruiting" list. Sad.

My bad, the red team was the Badgers, not Nebrasky. It was Wisky 42, Meatchick State 39.

I guess that Nebbish hasn't been relevant since 2001, the last time they were competing for a national title. Since then, about the only stink they've raised was when Donkeykong Suh Nut Stomper was chasing down Colt McCoy in the Big 12 championship game in 2009.

Nike calls it the "flywire" pattern. I don't think it serves any purpose other than aesthetics.

The UMass uni's look too shiny. Plus it looks like they are mesh jerseys, not the mesh we're used to seeing on the college/pro field, but the kind of mesh you see in high school/pee wee football.

Yeah, when I first saw a notice about the new uniform, it was the same uniform they wore last season (the one I originally posted). I noticed one image of the "new" uniform, but it looked so much like the one unveiled for Nebraska, that I thought it was fake. Turns out it was real. I went back and riposted the one you posted (plus video). It seems crazy to me that the two uniforms look so much alike.

The company that made Oregon's chrome helmets (and VT camo) made Army's new helmet. Looks like the "flat" colors are the latest fad. Here's Army's new flat gold helmet:

Wow some of those uniforms are simply awful while some are okay. I hate to say it, but OSU's versions are not too bad compared to the others.

I rather like that if we had a throwback uniform it would look pretty much the same as the current one. OU's tradition is fine as is.

Kentucky unveiled their 17 uniform combinations today. Personally, I think the black looks like crap, but Kentucky probably has to try anything they can to get recruits interested. I'm not going to post all 17 combinations, but here are a few (and you can get the idea):

https://sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-prn1/s720x720/547296_412004478847821_1688663556_n.jpg

North Dakota is introducing a new black alternative for this year, this one's not so bad (I think the green goes better with black):

And finally, this year's version of the Oregon helmets were leaked. Looks like they have sublimated the duck wings on to the chrome and mirrored green helmets:

Today, Oregon reveled their 2012 jersey. Looks pretty similar to last year except the font is different, the green is more like their old color and the duck wings are bigger on the shoulders:

Also, Oregon never wore the gray uniform they unveiled for the bowl game. There is a rumor that it will enter the uniform rotation this year:

I can't imagine any more new unveilings this close to the season, but there's bound to be one or two surprises (like the Maryland "pride" uniform last year).

Here's an ESPN piece (http://insider.espn.go.com/blog/colleges/oklahoma/post/_/id/12472/roundtable-should-ou-consider-alternate-uniforms#comment) about OU changing its unis. I frankly didn't think the white throwbacks looked so bad, and I don't believe there as a connection between the uniforms and how they played that day. Maybe the white throwback helmet every once in a while would be ok. But the basic design should be hands off. Some of our best looking clothing for fans and athletes (t-shirts, jackets, hats) often has a lot of white with the red OU emblazoned on it.

I'll copy the whole thing since some folks may not have insider access...

Today's question: Should OU consider having alternate uniforms?

• OU has one of the best brands in college football. So no, the Sooners shouldn't be doing what Oregon and Oklahoma State have been. But I do think there's an opportunity to have fun once in awhile. What does that mean? Maybe when it's time to take part in the Nike Pro Combat, do something forward instead of looking back. The Sooners' white throwbacks against Texas Tech in 2009 were an admirable attempt to honor the past. But the uniforms came out looking dull and unattractive (OU played even worse than the uniforms and got routed by Tech that day). The next time, OU should wear something different that will excite the players and the fan base. The tradition of the school lends itself to exciting uniform possibilities. Should it be something OU does every week? Or even once a year? No. But every few years? I think it would be fun for the fans, and even cooler for the players.

- Jake Trotter

Karl Anderson/Icon SMI

Landry Jones threw one touchdown and one interception in the loss to Texas Tech.

• Should Oklahoma undergo a complete overhaul of its uniforms complete with a bevy of combinations? No. But the Sooners should have uniform options that would allow them to wear different gear at least twice (one home game, one road game) each season. Why? Because it would help in recruiting. Anyone who believes there is not a direct correlation between Oregon's rise and their uniform explosion is fooling themselves. Even though the Sooners don't need it, uniform combinations would help spark interest on the recruiting trail. If one player the Sooners covet picked OU over another school just because they liked the uniforms better, it would have paid off. It's pretty simple... if winning is all you care about, it's a no brainer. The answer is yes.

- Brandon Chatmon

• Call me a traditionalist or out of touch, it doesn't matter to me, but OU should stick with its classic design. There are certain schools that when you see that jersey represent what college football is all about, and you have to put the Sooners in that category. OU doesn't need some gimmick jersey to bring attention to itself. Championships and tradition have sold the school just fine through the years and will still do the trick in the future. It's the trendy thing to do right now, obviously, but for OU, it isn't the right thing to do.

- Bob Przybylo

• I'll admit, I'm not a fan of most of the new uniform trends in college football. Maryland's uniform combination against Miami last season -- inspired by Maryland's state flag -- were hideous, for instance. But there are tasteful ways to change up uniforms. The Sooners' minimalistic throwbacks in 2009 were a noble effort to try something different, but the way they were dismantled on the field probably tainted some fans' opinions. There's no harm in trying different uniforms every so often. After all, they're just uniforms, right? And Brandon's correct; 18-year-old recruits and care about these things. They want something shiny, something new and fresh. (At least they're not choosing schools based on fast food proximity. Oh, wait.) So yes, I think OU should consider alternate uniforms every so often.

Agreed. My thoughts have continued to evolve on this issue, but I I'd like to see us add a white helmet (maybe the one in your pic, the throwback). Otherwise, I can't think of a thing I would want to change.

Thanks for your post and the info.

Looks like the same jersey, but the helmets that year only had a stripe (no logo). The only crimson OU logo decal I've seen that size (the same size as the current helmet decal) is the kind you order for your car window. That's why I'm curious if this could be an alternate for this year. Probably not, but I think it looks pretty good.
