In honor of our countdown to kickoff thread (http://www.soonerfans.com/forums/showthread.php?168320-100-days-until-College-Football-returns!!/page2), let's do one of those debates where it will be impossible to develop a consensus, but we can at least try.

What is the greatest Sooner jersey number of all time?

To help you decide, here is a list of All-Americans by jersey number (http://www.soonersports.com/sports/m-footbl/archive/m-footbl-all-americans_by_jersey_number.html) courtesy of SS.com. From that page, you can also see the consensus ones as well as the most popular among the All-Americans --- 50, 54, 66, and 79. But, that doesn't necessarily mean any of those are the best of all.

So, let's start the process of elimination. Pick out the best range of numbers for now, and I'll come back in a future poll and ask about each number from the winning range individually.

Three days of anonymous voting. Vote for one and please don't try to change your vote.

Once again: This is only part one! We'll be voting on individual numbers next time. I just don't think the mods would appreciate a 99-option poll, yknow? :D

Also, if you don't want to stay anonymous in your voting, let me know your favorite jersey numbers and why!

I took the 90s, mostly because of #93. The fact that they both (Lee Roy and GK) went to the Tampa Bucs makes me a bit jealous :)

The numbers before 20-29 had some very good players filling those jersey numbers.

Hard to argue against them.

OK, how bout this: Choose your 10s range, but also write-in your favorite number whether its in that range or not in comments :)

I went with 20, simply because that one number has had the greatest players, perhaps the single best player in OU history, and it also has great players on both sides of the ball.

Oh boy... I know I could do 10 numbers, I could probably get away with 20, but not sure I could do 30. :D

The '90's let you take ALL the Selmon's.

And you DO remember the old joke, don't you?

A: "Did you hear? Dr. Tom had a heart attack!"

B: "Really, what caused it?"

A: "He heard Mrs. Selmon was pregnant again."

Yeah, I'm gonna have to do some subsequent polls to break this down even more. Keep votin'!

How has the 40's not received a single vote yet. I figured number 44 alone would have carried a ton of weight!

yOU're correct, I guess I was giddy as a school girl thinking about the past and future Sooner greats!

Spent your vote on a different one, eh? Remember that this is just the nominating phase. I can add in #44 or another number if enough people ask for it!

Got to be 90s, to include Selmons.

I probably went about this the wrong way, didn't I? Ah well, I'll try different methods in round two of voting.

Just makes you proud you are a Sooner, when you think of ALL of the great players that wore all the numbers. People don't give the O line enought credit and those would be the 50's....(usually)

sooneron
6/20/2012, 09:10 AM
I begrudgingly went with the 20's just because my all time fave wore #24.

There were a LOT of good 40's

Curtis L
Boz
Migliazzo
Rufus
Joe Bowden
Lydell Carr
Adrian Cooper

90's
Selmon 3X
Casillas
Tommie Harris
Dusty
I'm sure there are more that are escaping me

80's
K Jackson
T Smith
Broyles
F Alexander
Dan Cody
T Johnson
J Ferguson

Typically, the 60' & 70's are tougher to come by...

I'm sure there are some old schoolers that can correct me on that, though.
Greg Johnson, Anthony Phillips & Stacey Dillard come to mind...

sooneron
6/20/2012, 09:33 AM
You can't really discount the 30's
Steve Owens
Billy Vessels
Kenny King
Greg Pruitt
Seth Littrell

Many say Lee Roy was the greatest Sooner of all.

I think Mildren was No. 11. Just going by memory.

I went with 20-29 mostly because my all-time favorite Sooner wore #20. Rocky Calmus.

Except the ones that voted with me, I think you are all eeg-no-ray-mooses.

It's the 90's, and it isn't even close. Presumably nothing trumps AA/Heisman winners. But those range from 14-36.

But then you would be presuming incorrectly.

The Selmons. The Selmons trump all.

You throw Casillas and Harris on top of that dog pile? It's the 90's all the way. You can argue the 20's all you want. You would be wrong.

Put it this way... even with the numbers in the 20's, who would you take in a street fight? The 90's or 20's?

Thought so. GOOD DAY TO YOU ALL! :P

Before you all get too rowdy, this is a preliminary poll. You can still vote for a jersey in the 90s later even if you voted for the 20s now. I simply chose not to have a poll have 99 (or 100 if you include zero) options right away :D
