The University of Oklahoma was saddened to learn of the passing of Jerry Tubbs, who earned consensus football All-America honors in 1956.

Not only a great blocker, Tubbs established himself as one of the top pass defenders in the country with his three interceptions against Texas in 1955. During 1956, Tubbs was the first Sooner to receive the Walter Camp Award, given to the player of the year, and was also named Lineman of the Year by UPI.

After the Sooners soundly defeated the Maryland Terrapins in the 1956 Orange Bowl to win the national title, Miami Daily News writer Ralph Warner wrote: "Jerry Tubbs took the decision over Bob Pellegrini, the Maryland All-America, in the battle of the centers. Pellegrini was outstanding, but Tubbs was even more so with a brilliant all-around performance."
He was the third player taken in the 1957 draft by the Chicago Bears. He became the 12th Sooner player to be inducted into the National Football Foundation Hall of Fame on Dec. 10, 1996.

R.I.P.
His teams never lost a game in high school or college. Not many can say that.

Whether it's at football or life, he was as good as any Sooner has been or will be.

Rest In Peace.

P.S. And thanks for the memories even if they were before my time.

I think Tubbs was from Breckenridge, TX, a HS powerhouse during that era & a prime successful recruiting area for OU. I think OU had other players from there.

He was one of the SUPERSTARS of the 47 game winning streak. He made opposing linemen in most of the Big 7 and 8 feel like regular Irvin Skovgaards! SOONER SUUUUUPERSTAR!

Doesn't matter, but to be a nitpicker, didn't play in big 8.Who, Irvin Skovgaard? or Jerry Tubbs? Irvin was a nebbish wrestler, who had to face Wayne Wells in dual meets. You could feel the fear from high in the bleachers, at the old field house.

TubbsThe Big 8 started it's final identity in 1957, it appears, when orage aggy flexed its orange power, and joined the conference. The conference changed its name from Big 7 to Big 8 in 1960. So, neither Tubbs nor Skovgaard played (or wrestled) in the Big 8.

I meant Tubbs, never even heard of skaarsgarg.I doubt many here would know Skovgaard. For some reason, he stuck out to me as a guy who anyone could pity. When he came on the mat to face Wells, you could see the fear in his eyes. A pin was inevitable! Then, after turning poor Skovgaard inside out. Wells would hang from the basketball rim for an eternity, just to stretch out, and do his pushups.
