View Full Version : How do you fix this running Toilet?

all the online things say to tighten a screw, but don't see it on this one. Tank fills up too high. Tried bending the bar the ball is on but that didn't work either. What about the four screws on the top. would those work?

Should just have to bend that Ball down into the water a tad more
If that dont werk ya need a new valve
There should be a screw right in the center of the valve , those 4 hold the thing together dont mess with them

Get a new valve kit....

Whet

That valve kit should run you about $10.

cleller

Will it even shut off when you pull up on the ball? On that type, bending would be my first guess, too.

At least they are cheap and simple to replace, as long as you have a shut-off stop at the toilet. These new ones are adjustable height-wise by sliding the unit up and down the plastic pipe.

Leave that water in the tank in case of a nuclear attack overnight, though.

Like Cleller said, If ya pull up gently on the ball and the water dont shut off, Replace the valve simple to do
Just follow instructions on the new valve package

THIS.

I've spend a couple of Saturday's trying to "fix" running toilets. What did I learn? Just go buy a new kit. These things pretty much live in water 24/7, and it's very easy for them to get out of whack. They're cheap enough to replace, so why bother trying to fine tune a toilet valve?

If you possibly can, get one where the 'flapper' is an independent unit, not arms and ball molded in one piece. I've spent hours trying to adjust those bastards to get a slow leak fixed.

As above. If you maually lift up the ball it shoulod shut off. If not, replace the valve. They're cheep and have a lifetime so they mess up eventually.

Be sure and turn off your water source before replacing the valve.

If you broke the bar it'll need replacing.

It just screws into the valve stem and the ball.

You don't need the bar for the ball cause a Fluidmaster doesn't use a float ball...the float is built into the valve...

Flush it an see if it fills back up now
If it does you need to turn off yer meter if the shut off by the tank wont work.
You may look by yer water heater and see if theres another main cut off there

The toilet that won't die.

Now I can hear it slowly running water an once a minute the float just go down cause it shoots out water for 1 sec. I think it must be going out the flapper. Any suggestions. No way am I taking it apart and returning it.

Adjust the float a tad lower, if that dont do it , Like I said earlier wipe down the rim where the Flap seals and smear just some petroleum jelly on the rim , and some on the flap

colleyvillesooner
6/14/2012, 11:23 PM
I'll try that. The float seems to be in a good position, about 1/2" below the overflow valve.

the water fills up then shuts off 1/2" from the top of the overflow. then you can barely hear a water sound, then 30 seconds later it shoots out enough water to raise the float. that's why i think its going out the flapper. that plus when i press down on the flapper the noise seems to stop.
