View Full Version : Flat billed baseball caps

I was watching some college baseball and noticed that almost none of them have any curve at all in the bill of their hats. I kind of noticed it over the last few years but never bothered to think about it until now.

When did this trend start? It looks pretty dorky and I can't imagined what would have happened if I would have tried that back in my high school days. I guess I'm just admitting to be old...

I suppose it's no different than the dorks who used to roll their bills like a taco.

What I don't get is how the hats fit properly. I guess you buy them made to fit that way, right?

So I decided to watch some MLB after watching the college guys. Looks like most MLB players wear their hat the traditional way. I'm trying to figure out if there's any functional advantage to wearing a non-curved bill. I suppose you can wear them a little lower so you shield the sun a little more in the middle while giving up some peripheral shielding.

I roll mine mine like a taco, not actually like a taco. It has to be like a cowboy hat with personality.

Yes, it's one of those fads that make me want to leave the country. It was a west coast thing that is permeating into our slice of the USA.

I think it's a sign of major *********gery.

Gangsta fads start and progress slower than mainstream fads. Anyone remember the stupid fad about 1979-80 or so with the batting helmets?

It ain't new, and it ain't taking the country over. A bunch of dillweed little teenagers saw some gangsta rapholes doing it and thought it was groovy. Then, some other dillweed little faggoty skater boys saw it and started doing it. Finally, some little dillweed baseball players started doing it.

It's gay, it's lame, and it's hopefully going away soon.

Hate it.

My 12 year old son wears his hats that way, and I give him **** every time. What's worse is that all of the kids at his age level in youth baseball wear their hats like that. I hate it, and let him know it regularly. Fortunately he's a catcher, so he never wears it on the field that way.

Here in Colorado, Rockies shortstop Troy Tulowitzki (flat billed foolishness pictured below) is one of the top two most popular baseball players, and he wears a stupid flat-bill cap. So it just encourages the kids to wear it that way.

It's bad enough to wear a hat that way, it's worse when it's worn on the diamond. I hate flat bills and long pants in baseball, and both are popular right now. Although, I'm starting to see more and more youth players wearing stirrups and their pants pulled up to their knees...hopefully the flat-bill thing is soon to follow.

I won't get into the flat-billed debate with you guys (even though most of the examples being shown are not flat bills, they have curve to them). However, I am vehemently opposed to dudes playing baseball with their **** pulled up to their knees. That's how softball players wear their pants. If they want to wear them old school, which is baggy as hell, pulled up, that's fine. But these "boys" wearing tight-assed pants pulled up look silly. I'm not really a pants pulled down over the cleats guy, but full-length pants are the way to go. It's a cleaner look. It doesn't look juvenile or feminine. Might as well wear football pants on the baseball diamond.

I don't think that is 8timechamps kid although I'm sure he wouldn't mind having a Rockies player as a kid.

That being said, I don't think that picture is the best example as he does have a slight curve to the bill.

As far as tradition goes, I don't think any of us who in our 40's have a lot to say. Baseball uniforms in the '70s and '80s were about as far away from tradition as it comes. Then again, it wasn't really our choice...

I played in the 80's and we wore 'em tight, and pulled up to the knees and rolled. I hit .515 my senior year so I could wear 'em any effin way I wanted to! heh
And I disagree, the baggy soggy bottom pants look like **** in their own special way. But that doesn't bother me as much as the hats.
It's kind of like that period near the end of the 80's when we were trying bring back the low sock look. heh

Couldn't disagree more. Long pants in baseball is wrong. They look like pajama bottoms or white/grey slacks. I'm a traditionalist, so pulled up high with plenty of stirrup/sani showing. No skin tight pants either. The difference in softball and baseball pants...in softball, it's okay to wear dark colored pants, not in baseball.

Just out of curiosity, how old are you? I'm thinking that could have a lot to do with the style differences.

I spend every weekend at a ballpark somewhere, and the flat bills and long pants are here to stay, at least for now. I would guess that 90%-95% of the kids wear them that way, my 6 yr old included. I personally think it looks stupid, but my parents thought the mohawk I sported my senior year of football was stupid too. (Actually, it was.. )

You might like to reminisce about the old days of baseball, but the fact is that "traditional baseball" look is the softball look of today. It's fine on girls. They ALL look that way.

As far as the pic, that's even less traditional of a uniform. Button down shirt, tall socks with pants tucked into them. Like Ty Cobb era ****. When guys like Ian Kinsler don that look, that's cool. But that 60s/70s/80s baseball, contemporary softball look is dorky. Sorry, man. When I see ballplayers dressed like that (even OU's team) it makes me giggle at them and call them softball players.

No, I wasn't thinking you were/are 14. However, I am in my 40's, and I've yet to meet a person of my age (or older) that thinks flat bill hats look good. So, I was thinking if you're in your 20's, then your generation was part of the flat bill inception, so I can see why someone of that age group would think they look fine/good.

As for the uniforms in baseball, I agree about the tight fitting pants. Don't like 'em. Pull your pant leg up to your knee (just below), and blouse accordingly. That's traditional baseball.

You think the only good thing about being black is getting to "**** all the white wimmens?" Originally it was just disappointment that people would say "trying to be black" rather than something more along the lines of, "you look like white trash." I hate the emphasis that gets placed on the "black" part of it. I don't feel there should be a concern if your kid is white, black, mexican, asian, or any other race. The concern should be about them looking ghetto, trashy, skanky, etc. It's not about race.

This post took it way too far, though. You seriously think the only good thing about being black is getting to "**** all the white wimmens?" I'm thoroughly disgusted.

You're getting played so badly.

Nah, there's the running fast thing, the jumping high thing, the reduced requirements for admission into college, all sorts of black clubs and months and stuff, and most importantly, no sunscreen.

Actually, sooner_born is right, I forgot it was postponed for tomorrow due to the softball game.

First 500 people get a free flat billed ball cap.

Come to the conclusion that the Flat bill thingy is a Definite Fad . The Thunder all had their NBA hats on and every one of em was on crooked and flat

To be fair, that's every team that wins something. They pull those hats out of boxes 10 minutes beforehand, so they're not exactly "broken in". Same thing goes for hockey teams, and I challenge anyone to turn that one into a racial thing.

Other than saying it's clearly a Canadian problem. Justin Bieber is out of control and must be stopped.

I need to mention this.

If you're watching a soon-to-be Sooner national championship in softball and the main thing going through your mind is bagging on their pants, you may want to check your heterosexuality index. Go get blood drawn. Maybe a cheek swab. Possibly an MRI.

Mmmmm. Thick girls.

So I can safely assume you're a lesbian...?

You will hardly ever see me without a hat on. The only time I don't wear one is when I am inside my house and sleeping. That being said I cannot stand to wear anything but a fiftynine50. They fit right, look great and as far as breaking the bill, I go the natural curve way. Gravity or tension on the bill seams to curve it for me. I used to curve my hat so much that I had no peripheral vision but now I just let god take care of it and I think I look fine. No gangsta look or hood look just regular old hat look. All of my OU hats are New Era's fiftynine50's.
