He was the Oklahoma's first consensus football All-American and led the Sooners to their first bowl game, the 1939 Orange Bowl.As a member of the Brooklyn Dodgers football franchise, he played in the NFL's first televised game.He was among the first to pilot a B-29 Superfortress over Japanese targets during World War II.
