Joe Biden Reflects on Grief, Suicidal Thoughts After Death of Wife and Daughter

Vice President Joe Biden today delivered a deeply personal and, at times, emotional address to survivors of slain U.S. military service members, recounting his struggle with intense grief after his wife and daughter were killed in a car accident almost 40 years ago.
"For the first time in my life, I understood how someone could consciously decide to commit suicide," Biden told a Washington gathering organized by the Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors (TAPS), a non-profit advocacy group, to commemorate Memorial Day.
"Not because they were deranged, not because they were nuts, because they'd been to the top of the mountain and they just knew in their heart they'd never get there again, that it was … never going to be that way ever again. That's how an awful lot of you feel."
Biden described how he first learned of the accident on Dec. 18, 1972, just weeks after he was first elected to the U.S. Senate from Delaware. While he was in Washington, D.C., his wife, Neilia, one-year-old daughter, Naomi, and sons, Beau and Hunter, were Christmas shopping in Hockessin, Del. Their car was struck by a tractor-trailer. Only Beau and Hunter survived.
"And just like you guys know by the tone of a phone call - you just knew, didn't you? You knew when they walked up the path. You knew when the call came. You knew. You just felt it in your bones something bad happened," Biden said. "And I knew. I don't know how I knew. But the call said my wife was dead, my daughter was dead, and I wasn't sure how my sons were going to make it."
The vice president told the families he genuinely understands the "black hole you feel in your chest, like you're being sucked back into it." And, he said, while the ache never goes away, it "gets controllable."
"Just remember two things," he said. "Keep thinking what your husband or wife would want you to do. Keep thinking what it is, and keep remembering those kids of yours, or him or her the rest of their life, blood of my blood, bone of my bone, because, folks, it can and will get better," he said.
"There will come a day, I promise you, and your parents, as well, when the thought of your son or daughter or your husband or wife brings a smile to your lips before it brings a tear to your eye," he said. "It will happen. My prayer for you is that day will come sooner or later. But the only thing I have more experience than you in is this: I'm telling you it will come."

they do tend to lean republican - but it wouldnt have been any different had Dick Cheney done the same thing. the military is supposed to be apolitical - there are plenty of places to do a stump speech on foreign policy - there's no doubt in my mind that BIden's speech was drafted from the same message that Obama made at the AFA a few days before.

Don't have a link, but I recall reading that Biden kept saying his wife was killed by a drunk driver when that was not the case but it made for a more sympathetic story. The man's family had to sue Biden to get him to stop saying the man was drunk.

If true, then even his grief is political fodder for him.

You folks pile on and compare him to a VP who had to resign because he took brides. Yes, talking too much = taking bribes, yep they are equal. Now when I point out to you that the guy most, if not all, of you voted for twice kept an entire aircraft carrier out to sea for an extra day for POLITICS, you call me a troll, stupid and the most laughable of all blaming bush.

It is laughable how quickly the right goes to stereotypes of liberals and anyone else who does not spout their narrow view point. I must be a government taken care of underachiever, just like Obama who was let into schools not because he made good grades but because he was black. And by the way this gpa at Columbia was 3.7. That’s how you get into Harvard law.

It is funny that the right is lead around by the nose of the teaparty and their backers who have managed to brand anything that comes from the government – SOCIALISM! Open up another tab on explorer and google how did the funders of the teaparty make the family fortune. With a little research you will find out that the money came from the SOVIET UNION! Talk about socialism providing for you.

Just read up some on this. The investigation of the crash concluded that Biden's wife turned in front of the tractor-trailer. No allegations of the driver being drunk. Yet as recently as 2007 Biden addressed a group of students at the University of Iowa and said this:

"a tractor trailer, a guy who allegedly, and I never pursued it, drank his lunch instead of eating his lunch, broadsided my family, killed my wife instantly, killed my daughter instantly, and hospitalized my two sons."

Many outlets have stated his family was killed by a drunk driver, including The Huffington Post, and The Economist. However, a Delaware Superior Court judge said this:

"The rumor about alcohol being involved by either party, especially the truck driver, is incorrect," said Jerome O. Herlihy, a Delaware Superior Court judge who was chief deputy attorney general and worked with crash investigators in 1972.

i'm reminded of Col Jessup when he asked Lt Cafferty if that was all he had, flight records, and such.....please tell me you've got more - these mens lives are on the line

I'm sure he's a nice, decent guy. He's just a politician first and foremost, and it has overtaken his life.
