View Full Version : More "confirmation" regarding FSU moving to the Big XII THIS June?

"According to two people with the strongest ties possible to Florida State's Athletic Department, FSU fully plans on exiting the Atlantic Coast Conference. Florida State will begin its transition to the Big 12 Conference beginning this June. One source went as far as to say, 'at this point the move is inevitable.'" (http://dev.chuckoliver.net/2012/05/fsu-to-the-big-12-it-is-inevitable/)

THis seems pretty far-fetched to me. There's simply no way the Big XII could get a football schedule together that quickly. Look how long it took them to sort it out the previous 2 seasons.

they wouldn't be playing in the conference this fall, it would be the 2013 season. just beginning the process this year, much like a&m this past season

Sounds more like the lame duck season of Nebraska and Colorado.

Meh, it didn't take us that long to dump Mizzou and A&M and add in TCU and West Virginia.

I'd have to say if this is true then kudos to the PTB. Big XII rises from the ashes. We need another east coaster though, some have mentioned Clemson. Since football drives things in the good ol' U.S. of A... the XII is in the driver's seat over the ACC schools. Seem to me only Va Tech would be only other viable one due to history of the other ones.

Let's take a look-see, shall we?

Boston College
Pros: Hates Notre Dame. Inspirational cancer beating. '99-2010 bowl streak. Doug Flutie won the Heisman... who gave Miami the finger on a final play.
Cons: ONE conference title (and it was a Big East title), 44k stadium capacity, went 4-8 last season to end bowl streak.

I'll do more later.

5/21/2012, 01:26 PM
Clemson
Pros: 1981 national champs, 80k stadium which also has Big 12-like name ("Memorial Stadium"), 18 conference titles (14 in ACC), Dabo is a fun coach on TV, Brent Venables!
Cons: They seem kind of aggie-ish with their orange and not being the flagship school of the state, don't they? Oh, and anything that a Bowden has touched = bad.

badger
5/21/2012, 01:28 PM
Duke:
Pros: Steve Spurrier once coached there, Peyton Manning trained there in the offseason with his ex-college coach Cutliffe... ok, that's about all I can think of.
Cons: Anything to do with football, like having a 33k capacity stadium, no national or conference titles, and having a losing record most seasons, and a losing postseason record overall... for all EIGHT of their appearances (3-5).

Apparently GT is reaching out. I've heard for a long time it was Clemson and FSU in preliminary talks and they did the reaching out.

And they would be joining in the 2013 season. Still won't expect much until the Big 12 meeting, maybe not until the new Commish formally starts (maybe to start things off with a bang). Apparently they have to notify ACC by August 15.

Florida State:
Pros: 1993 and 1999 national champs, 15 conference titles, 2 Heisman winners (although they both SUCK), 82k stadium, hates Miami, Mark Stoops!
Cons: The Bowden connection, FSU used to be a women's college... ok, I'm grasping at straws, yes.

badger
5/21/2012, 01:34 PM
Georgia Tech:
Pros: 1952 and 1990 national champs, 16 conference titles, is one of the few programs to reject the SEC and live to tell about it.
Cons: 55k stadium, claims national titles from 1917 and 1928, has not won a bowl since 2004

badger
5/21/2012, 01:37 PM
Maryland:
Pros: 1953 national champs, 11 conference titles, blinds opponents with outrageous Under Armour unis since the founder is a Terpy alum
Cons: 54k stadium, retroactively claimed the '51 national title, went 2-10 last season, has a .500 postgame record (11-11-2) and blinds opponents with outrageous Under Armour unis since the founder is a Terpy alum

badger
5/21/2012, 01:39 PM
Miami:
Pros: 76k stadium, 83, 87, 89, 91 and 2001 national champs, 9 conference titles, 2 Heisman winners, most active alums in the NFL currently
Cons: It's ****ing Miami.

badger
5/21/2012, 01:42 PM
North Carolina:
Pros: 63k stadium, 9 conference titles, went to bowls every year since 2008, providers of the "I'm a ____ born" song.
Cons: The whole recent cheating thing, losing postseason record (13-16), a basketball school first and foremost.

badger
5/21/2012, 01:44 PM
North Carolina State:
Pros: 11 conference titles, winning postseason record including winning bowls past two seasons
Cons: 57k capacity stadium

badger
5/21/2012, 01:50 PM
Virginia:
Pros: 3 conference titles, 61k stadium, 2011 ACC Coach of the Year (Mike London), went to bowl last season
Cons: Losing postseason record (7-11), "Not Gay!" (google it)

badger
5/21/2012, 01:53 PM
Virginia Tech:
Pros: 7 conference titles, bowl game every season since 1993, 66k stadium
Cons: Losing postseason record (9-14), lost most recent BCS bowl games (2011 Orange, 2012 Sugar)

badger
5/21/2012, 01:55 PM
Wake Forest:
Pros: 2 conference titles, winning postseason record (6-4)
Cons: 31k stadium, only 10 bowl appearances

badger
5/21/2012, 02:00 PM
And the future ACC members:
Pitt:
Pros: 1976 national champs, 2 conference titles (NOT a typo as they were indy till 1990), 65k stadium
Cons: Claim 8 additional national titles, losing postseason record (12-16)

Syracuse:
Pros: 1959 national champs, 4 conference titles, 1 Heisman winner, winning postseason record (12-9-1)
Cons: 49k stadium, one winning season since 2002 (8-5 in 2010)

If you're talking to me, it sounds like we need to steal one more ACC member after Florida State to make our Big 12 return-to-twelve-members thing complete. So, I was going through current and future ACC members to see which would be the most football-desirable. Looks like Florida State is a home run, Clemson is a triple and Duke is bunting on a fastball, only to have the ball backspin into your face, breaking your nose, followed by the catcher catching the ball, your teammates forgetting to tag up and them getting thrown out, causing your team to lose the championship.

Louisville would leave the BE in a second (if we needed a 12th team). I don't think the scheduling issue would be that difficult as we could go back to 8 conference games. I'd rather have Clemson than Louisville, but if we need a 12th, and Clemson drags their feet...take Louisville.

Like the analysis. GT would probably be my first choice alongside FSU. Clemson and VT would still be alright. Didn't both of them make the list of ESPN's most overrated schools? I've always kinda thought scheduling them nonconf was a smart way of padding the schedule while also getting a nice bump in the polls. Wonder if they'd still get as much love in the preseason if they were in the big 12 though.

Me too, but if the Big XII finds themselves in need of a 12th team, they can always get Louisville. Not to mention they don't have the worst football program in the country...and have a pretty good basketball team.

Lets just say there are people with strong ties to OU at rivals that are saying that it is all but a done deal. And an announcement will be made by August.

IDK though.

That said, everyone inside the Big 12 and FSU that have publicly said anything, are saying the same stuff that the SEC and even Big 10 has said before getting teams from the Big 12.

Any speculation that includes ND is not ridiculous.

Why do I say that? College football is about to change from the traditional bowl only format for post season play.

That said, it is going to be very difficult for ND to be in the top 4...already is. And if they make it conference champs only, it makes it even tougher for ND. And yes, I am very aware that they will bow down to ND and give them a way in.

That said, the best way for ND to get into the national playoff is through a conference, one of the top 4 conferences (SEC, Big 12, Big 10, Pac 12).

They are also getting left behind in TV revenue. If they were in a conference for football, they would make a ton more money than they do now from being on their own with NBC.

So no, it isn't ridiculous for anyone to speculate about adding Notre Dame. And if ND wishes to remain viable on the field of play, they will take an invite to one of the big 4 conferences.

Also, when speculating on who we are going to steal next, consider the buyouts.

The ACC reportedly now has a buyout clause of $20 million. Linky (http://espn.go.com/blog/acc/post/_/id/29051/acc-received-applications-buyout-increased-exponentially)

Of course, that article also says:

The one thing that is clear is that the ACC's current membership is rock solid.

LOL :P

Remember that the Big 12 and WVU together paid the Big East $20 million to get WVU in the Big 12 this coming season, rather than waiting another. Linky (http://espn.go.com/blog/big12/post/_/id/45604/breaking-down-wvu-big-east-settlement)

Would the Big 12 be willing to pitch in $10 million to get another school again, or would the school wanting to leave have to handle the entire $20 mil this time around?

Rumor is that the $20 mil is not an issue. Whatever is left over from A&M and Missery would assist them with that.

OK, but serious question now --- even if we had spare millions lying around, do we really need to pay schools to join our conference at this point, or should people be paying us to join? Or pay all of their own way to join? I mean, I can think of 10 member schools in the Big 12 that would LOVE to receive the spare millions rather than the Big 12 just dish it out to others.

I think that an interesting addition along with the 3 most talked about potential additions: FSU, Clemson and GayTech (I'm also a UGA alumnus as well as an OU alumnus), would be Pittsburgh. It gives WVa back its rivalry game and they arent a real threat, but still have a name known well enough to be respected. And it throws basketball a bone.

Hmmm. I think we ought to tell Notre Dame that if they join the Big 12, the conference will give them half of what all the other schools pay to get in. Since ND is just vain enough to think that their presence will cause other schools to pony up, they will jump at the opportunity.

Besides being left out of any national title playoff mix, I think that Notre Dame really wants access to recruitment in Texas and Florida by playing more games there. And, keeping the USC OOC game to play in southern California. Or, that's what I'd do
