'Obama's views on distractions have evolved too'
Rick Moran

That's the headline of an excellent IDB editorial that points out candidate Obama's complaints about "distractions" in 2008 that kept the conversation off the economy.

Remember how candidate Barack Obama complained in 2008 that any discussion not involving the economy was a "distraction"? This time, his entire campaign is built on distracting voters from the economy.

During his 2008 campaign, one of Obama's favorite words was "distraction." He constantly plugged it into his speeches and interviews to dismiss any controversy that might have erupted, or an issue he didn't particularly want to talk about.

Questions about how Obama could have sat in the pews and listened to Rev. Wright's anti-American, race-baiting screeds for years? Distraction. Questions about his relationship with radical Bill Ayers? Distraction. Questions about his qualifications to be president? Distraction.

Typically, Obama would follow up by talking about how we need to focus instead on "the real issues." Here's just a small sampling of Obama quotes:

"You could see race bubbling up in a way that was distracting from the issues that I think are so important to America right now." March 2008
"We knew that the closer we got to the change we seek, the more we'd see of the politics we're trying to end - the attacks and distortions that try to distract us from the issues that matter." March 2008
"It's easy to get caught up in the distractions and the silliness and the tit for tat that consumes our politics." April 2008
" Yes, we know what's coming. ... The same efforts to distract us from the issues that affect our lives by pouncing on every gaffe and association and fake controversy in the hope that the media will play along." May 2008

Now, of course, we have the "war on women," gay marriage, and the "lonely" decision to kill bin Laden that Romney wouldn't have made. Talk about anything but the dismal economy, high gas prices, and growing debt.

Obama apparently gets so distracted by these other issues, he can't remember how serious the recession has hit his fellow Americans.
Voters should vow to remind the president on election day.

Of course republicans are completely immuned to such tactics?

I am already relishing the thought of this campaign boiling down to a debate over gay marriage.

I'm sure you are. Anything to keep the conversation as far away from the economy and the debt as possible..

But in states like North Carolina, which Obama won by only 14K votes in 2008, gay marriage just lost by 40 points... So I hope Obama goes down there and talks about gay marriage.

There is no debate. Romney responded to Obama's flip flop and that is it. Romney will focus on Obama's weak spot.. Well.. That is a rather large target. He will target the economy and the debt specifically. Gas prices are a bonus, but he will hit him on Keystone as well.

Obama has no real defense to any of those.

And Romney hasn't flip flopped on the issue?

. In 1994, when he referred to himself as a moderate, Romney told the Log Cabin Republicans -- a GLBT organization -- that he'd be better than Sen. Ted Kennedy on gay rights. Wednesday, he reiterated his views in his latest incarnation as a conservative by saying that he's against marriage equality and civil unions.

Of course he does, but reelections are all about the incumbent's record.

Obama released a video with his "Forward" slogan.. It doesn't mention the stimulus or Obamacare at all... Not a peep. Why not? Shouldn't those be Obama's biggest accomplishments?

I would call that running from your record. I'm fairly confident that Romney is smart enough to not let him run from it.

How on gods green earth is Romney going to be able to attack Obama Care when he did virtually the same thing in Massachusetts?

sappstuf

How on gods green earth is Romney going to be able to attack Obama Care when he did virtually the same thing in Massachusetts?

Because no one argues it can't be done on a state level. 72% of Americans think Obamacare is unconstitutional including 56% of Dems.. Obamacare is massively unpopular and it has only gotten worse since it was passed.

If the SCOTUS reverses Obamacare, it won't matter anyway. Then Romney can point to Obama's signature legislative accomplishment, the one with his name on it, passed by Dems at all levels against the wishes of the American people and scoff that it couldn't even pass constitutional muster while bragging about Romneycare in Mass if he so wishes.

Once again, this is the reason for all the distractions... Obama cannot run on his own record. He cannot win the above scenario. He will distract for as long as possible and then go ultra negative against Romney.

It is Obama's only chance.
