My son was born at 24 weeks, 1lb 5oz when he was born, He was given the last rites, and we nearly lost him twice in the first 4 months. This is my wife's small hand on his head a few weeks after he was born.

This is a picture of him today, he turned 3 a few weeks ago. Here he is contemplating flying over the trees in our backyard.

No matter what problems you have, you can get through it.

Great story.

I am confused though. Did you mean he was born at 24 weeks? Otherwise I think you not only broke the world record but shattered it.

Anyway, your boy looks great!

OK, well now I'm crying at work. My wife works NICU at Mercy and I hear details sometimes...I try to comfort her, but newborns battling for their life will never be normal or easy.

I'm so very happy for you and your family and he truly is a beautiful child.

Born at 24 weeks yes. He is still the smallest baby to ever be born at the Kaiser Hospital in the San Fernando Valley. Eyes fused shut and basically had no skin. He was on the borderline of development in terms of whether or not the they would even try to save him. Everything you need to know about him can be summed up in the first photo I ever took of him.

My oldest was a preemie, too. Not as extreme, but still born 7 weeks early... 4 lbs 6 oz, and dropped weight down to 3 lbs 8 oz before he started gaining it back. Somethin' about those little guys that do make it. They are feisty. He's 16 now, and lb. for lb. one of the hardest workers and toughest players on his football team.

You'll have to go back to the NICU for a reunion sometime... I know the hospital my guy was born at hosts one every year. Nurses love seeing their kids, and so do the new (sometimes scared) preemie parents.

We were supposed to go to one last October, but we all got sick, and the last thing you want to is get a NICU nurse sick, knowing who they are around every day. We plan on going this year though.
