So it's good to have Mike back even though he didn't recruit and replacements for the 3-4 of the up front 7 guys we lost and even with what we see today, we still won't have any idea about who will replace LJ next year.

RJ , Stacy McGee and Casey Johnson, Coleman, Whaley, Geno Griffin...all out even though it's really exciting...lol

The 45 minute Autograph session was a hit with my kids. Landry, Jaz Hands, Kendall Thompson, Blake Bell, lots of the new RS and Freshman. I'll have to take a look later to see who all signed their stuff. Very cool that the University and the players agreed to do that for the Kids that really look up to them.

The Boy got lots of signatures and some pics with some of the Players. I like this one and another one that he got with #72 Derek Farniak who is like 6'9".

Highs:
Trey Metoyer - good hands, good feet, good size. Going to contribute a lot
Taylor McNamara - This guy is going to be a freaking stud for us. Awesome hands, used his body well to shield receptions, and ran pretty good routes from what I could tell. If he can block some we will be golden for a while, but until then running on the edge may be a bit dicey.
OL - Looked clean, gave the QBs time, and opened some running lanes. I couldn't tell who was on who most of the time because I suck and haven't memorized all the numbers again. Still, they looked good to me.
Defense looked like they were in the right position 99% of the time.

Lows:
Slipping on our own field. Really?
LBs look small and timid, still. That may change with some summer and fall work, though. Still lots of time.
Jevon Harris. Well... he was at least in position on the deep ball he gave up. He also laid the lumber to Franks once, which was nice...

I don't think you can take much from this game, but it was nice to see the kids suit up and have fun out there. They all looked a little tired, though. I think the storms and lack of depth took their toll. The crowd was small, too, so I think that impacted the intensity level.

I think it's obvious how much more comfortable Bell looks in the pocket. He made some bad throws, but nothing near as bad as in games last year. He also made some seriously nice throws, so he has a huge upside. Honestly, though, I think every QB we have could win us 9 games this year. They all look like they can make the throws, and have a ton of talent around to make plays for them.

I guess I'll have to get my kids to hate him just for you Marty.

I'm not sure if he'll be a lineman but his BF's Dad was 6'11" and that little boy is 10 years old and 5'6' and headed towards 200 and thank God he's a nice kid because if he wasn't, he'd be a handful by the time he's 14. We will see how it goes. They both like sports.

I heard from a former player back in January that OU might go without names on the jerseys again in 2012. Noticed today no one had names on the jerseys. Maybe Stoops is treating some of last year's attitude and entitlement issues the same way he did with the 2006 team? Anywho... that's an off-season question to ponder.

Metoyer is great with the media and seems to have a great attitude toward the game. Reynolds looks like he's going to be able to build on last year's performance. Lots of guys were held out either due to injury or due to Stoops pulling them early. Not a surprise. Happens every year. Landry's a four-year starter... there's not much he needs to show in regards to reading defenses and calling this offense that is basically designed to Landry Jones's abilities.

A lot will be said for Kenny Stills in the coming months IMO. He's suffering from the Ryan Broyles comparisons the way Landry's suffering from the Sam Bradford comparisons. He reminds me a LOT of Travis Wilson. People had super high hopes for TW, and injuries, QB play and not having Mark Clayton on the field "exposed" TW as a good player, but not the dominant one everyone wanted him to be in 2005. Just when I watch film, that's excatly who he reminds me of. It's extremely difficult to be Ryan Broyles or Mark Clayton... that's why those guys were up for National honors multiple times. I still think KS will be used a lot, but would not be surprised to see him passed on the depth chart by Metoyer or Reynolds. Then again, sometimes things change. Who knew Landry Jones would start 11 games in 2009? Who knew Paul Thompson would has as good or better numbers as a Heisman winner in 2006 in say... April 2006? Who knew Adrian Peterson would finish second in the Heisman Trophy race as a true freshman in say... April 2004?

Bold predictions:
1. Metoyer is going to live up to the hype. A different type of player than Broyles was, but will be a dominant player.
2. Base offense will be the pistol formation with Millard playing TE instead of FB due to TE youth and inexperience.
3. Allen and Bell will still be 2A and 2B as far as the coachspeak is concerned, but Bell will be first off the bench if needed.
4. One of Durron Neal or Sterling Shepard will be used on special teams and possibly worked onto the field as a slot WR in 2012... maybe both. Returns specialists are lacking still and OU likes having a slot WR to keep the corners honest as we don't typically run dominantly without a true playmaker ala Q, AD or DM.

I can see Mike and Jay getting into a fight for Neal. The guy tackles nicely (in a great way), has fluid hips, has speed, and covers well. Same for Shepard but his highlight film didn't give as many defensive plays as Durron's video (14+ minutes). Both guys are too talented not to see the field as true frosh. Maybe OU has a future 1st round CB(s) from these two.

Gon8...

I thought the same thing yesterday when no one had names on their jerseys but I also was thinking that maybe it's something like who is going to earn their name on their jersey?

Maybe in late August they start walking around handing out jerseys to those that are making the Team and are going to be on the sidelines? Maybe some get RSs and others make the practice squad? Also with so many guys out of commission right now why use nice new jersies? Some of the ones I saw on them had been ripped and torn and sewn up and were just used for this scrimmage. I don't think i'd make to much out of it though.

Team wise, yes. But you can get a sense whether a player will be productive or not.
I remember being excited about Tristen Ross after a spring once upon a time.

Yep. And I'll say this....If you have been going to Spring Games and Regular Season Games every year....you really get a sense of just how the team is going to come together and what kind of talent they have.

For me....we will be lucky to win 10 games this year.

That can change but losing Broyles was devastating and I know lots of folks think Landry Sucks but it's not him. It's the WRs. I would have let Norvell go after the first year he was here. I just don't think he's getting to these kids. Josh was a great QB Coach and as Offensive Coordinator I think he'd be fine if we just had a WRs Coach instead of someone who was trying to prove his worth like Norvell is. Just an Opinion but it's how I've felt about Jay. He needs to be at another School in charge of his own Offense.

Here are my impressions from the R-W:

1) I think in all of the years I've gone to the spring fling, the former player turnout this year was the lowest ever. May have had a dozen to 18 former players on the field before the game.

2) Nice of AD to show up and be recognized for his very generous gift. He has been a class act since day one he stepped on campus and I'm glad to see that he continues to support the Unverisity.

3) Metoyer is a man among boys. He has a presence similar to other great players that have played on Owen field. Not so bold prediction: Metoyer will be the No. 1 receiver come fall with Stills and Jaz in a battle for the No. 2. Competition is a great thing. It will be interesting to see how the young guns respond.

4) DB's competed admirably - felt bad for Javon on the long ball to Jaz, but he was there. Jaz made a great play on the ball to pull it in.

5) Low-light: Lack of focus by Stills as evidenced by numerous drops.

6) Run blocking was strong early, but it seemed as the game went on the DL became more assertive. That said, run game seemed to overpower the D with Millard toting the rock.

7) There is an embarrassing depth at QB. Jones, Allen, and Bell can all lead this team. Thompson adds a dimension that we haven't seen since JW had both of his knees. None of these kids look lost throwing the ball.

8) Not sure where Finch is going to fit in to the scheme.

9) There are no Butkus caliber LB's on this roster (well, maybe Millard if Bob would try my experiment suggestion).

10) Young TE's could be a factor in the passing game. Green and McNamara played well. They looked smaller than what they are listed at in the program, but I guess it is what it is.

Great day - great way to watch a scrimmage.

Thoughts...

Like everyone else, Trey Metoyer is going to be great. He was even pretty good on his downfield blocking. Huge f'cking hands!

Trey Millard will need to get more touches.

Jordan Phillips is very athletic and quick. He must have 8 ft long arms!

Why does Trey Franks fall down so many times???

McNamara looked to have raw talent and made some good plays.

70 and 72 almost threw punches near the sideline.

I didn't get to go, but I was watching some film of the game. Bell made some nice throws, but he doesn't seem to step into his throws as much as other quarterbacks. Watching Jones, his body breaks right over his feet while Bell seems to break a little behind. Could be just me, but that is what I observed.

10 games? Really?! I don't think we're looking at an unbeaten year (given out tough end-of-year schedule), but we'll win at least 10.

I don't agree about Norvell. There are a ton of kids on this team we wouldn't have without his recruiting ability. I'd say he's hand's down, the best recruiter on the staff. Norvell is the guy in the trenches with the offensive skill positions (minus the QBs). I'd say he's more than earned his keep.
