The official Pentagon news release says he died "from injuries suffered in a noncombat related incident." But there is much more to the story. Weichel, 29, of Providence, died saving the life of a little girl.
According to the Rhode Island National Guard and the U.S. Army, Weichel was in a convoy a week ago with his unit in Laghman Province, in northeast Afghanistan. Some children were in the road in front of the convoy, and Weichel and other troops got out to move them out of the way.

Most of the children moved, but one little girl went back to pick up some brass shell casings in the road. Afghan civilians often recycle the casings, and the girl appeared to aim to do that. But a Mine-Resistant Ambush-Protected vehicle was moving toward her, according to Lt. Col. Denis Riel of the Rhode Island National Guard.

MRAPs, as they are known, usually weigh more than 16 tons.

Weichel saw the massive truck bearing down on the girl and grabbed her out of the way. But in the process, the armored truck ran him over, Riel said.

The little girl is fine. Weichel died a short time later of his injuries.

Funny how the bad stuff makes headlines, but this barely gets mentioned. God Bless This Man and His Family!

Too bad you chose to politicize a story that's not political.

I'm sorry for his family's loss.

I didn't bring Travon Martin into this thread.

Okie52 chose to do that.

Too bad you always have to follow me around like a trout with your mouth open going after my fly. Or is it my pant's fly you're after?

This is the political thread.

The story was about a brave soldier. Not politics.

It should have been on the other Forum.

Shame on you.

Hey, Einstein, I didn't start this thread. News items are fine for the political forum.

Hawaii isn't on another planet yet, is it?

Shut the **** up.

Damn. A man gives his life to save a child and you, for some ungodly reason, feel important enough to **** all over a thread honoring him. Let me save you the suspense; you're a flyspeck.

I didn't see the story about the dead punk being "drug into the thread." I saw a statement that is very true, and very telling about the psyche of the American press/public. Where the hell is Al Sharpton and Jesse the nimrod praising this hero? Oh wait, this boy ain't black and he ain't having his rights violated by whitey so it ain't no big thing. ****ing meh.

How sad is it when we get days and days of Trayvon and nothing on this guy? What a ****ing country...

Why don't you respond to Okie52 for bringing up Travon Martin in this thread?

I agree this thread should have been about the actions of one of our brave and the life he gave for an innocent little girl. However, someone else tried to mess with this thread and it wasn't me.

It woulda been so easy to leave the rest of the sorry news out of this thread. Sad it wasn't to be,

The hole was dug when Okie52 decided to bring Travon into a thread where it clearly didn't belong.

It should been purely about Sfc Dennis Weichel and nothing more.

I read a story about a guy that seems to have been the epitome of a Christian by laying down his life for another when his own life was in peril. It's one of those things that ranks pretty high on God's list and IMO continues to show that there is hope for all of us who walk this Earth that we could possibly one day exist without War, without fighting and maybe even arguing over stupid internet posts. Think it started to go wrong when you compared what IMO is one of the utmost examples of Humanity to things that make the Headlines. When you do that....you further add to the number of bad stories in mentioning it the way you did. This story even made The Huffington Post which is one of the publications I hear many of you complain about so I really have a hard time with the reason for this Thread. Wrath and Chastisement aren't something I think of when I think about what this guy did. Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.....That's what I read into it. It has zero to do with being a good Soldier. Weichel IMO was a good man. I pray that I would have reacted the same way if I'm ever in a similar situation. America is full of Weichels and IMO....I truly believe I have met some Weichels right here on this board. I pray that everyone of you would have also been a Weichel. I think it's time to let some of these arguments go....Spc. Dennis P. Weichel Jr. will be missed, but I know he will be remembered, and mourned, by people all over the World. God Bless His Family, Friends and fellow Soldiers. I think this says a lot about him...

That's Specialist Weichel for you," said Sgt. First Class Robert Tobin,
who was with him that day. "He had a tremendous love for his kids and
his family, and I can only imagine the reason why he would do something
like that was because he would want somebody to do something like that for his kids.
