Santorum Promises Broad War on Porn (http://www.forbes.com/sites/joshbarro/2012/03/15/santorum-promises-broad-war-on-porn/)

The Daily Caller flags a little-discussed position paper on Rick Santorum’s campaign website—his pledge to aggressively prosecute those who produce and distribute pornography. Santorum avers that “America is suffering a pandemic of harm from pornography.” He pledges to use the resources of the Department of Justice to fight that “pandemic,” by bringing obscenity prosecutions against pornographers.

I would note that this is very different from what the Bush Administration did. The Bush DOJ did establish an Obscenity Prosecution Task Force in 2005, but this body focused on bringing prosecutions against small-time producers who made porn with extreme content. (Even so, it faced significant pushback from U.S. Attorneys, some of whom viewed such prosecutions as a distraction and a misuse of resources.) Many social conservative groups were disappointed with the task force, contending that more mainstream hardcore porn violates obscenity laws, and they urged the Bush Administration to bring obscenity cases against major producers.

Santorum promises that he would do exactly this. His statement references going after pornography that is distributed not just on the Internet, but also “on cable/satellite TV, on hotel/motel TV.” Perhaps I am not staying in the most interesting hotels, but my impression is that porn distributed through such channels is almost definitionally not extreme. Santorum’s statement also touts his work on this issue with “groups including Morality in Media, Family Research Council, Focus on the Family, American Family Association”—many of which were among the groups calling on the Bush Administration to prosecute mainstream porn producers in 2007. And he says he “proudly support[s] the efforts of the War on Illegal Pornography Coalition,” which advocates the use of obscenity laws against mainstream porn.

Some of Santorum’s defenders have taken the tack of separating his personal views from his policy views. Santorum thinks contraception is “not OK” and he has announced his intention to use the bully pulpit to discuss “the dangers of contraception.” But he doesn’t think contraception should be illegal, and he voted for Title X contraception subsidies (though he said in a recent debate that he opposes Title X, despite voting for it.) On pornography, though, Santorum’s views can’t be written off as purely personal—he has stated a clear intent to use the levers of government to stop adults from making and watching porn.

Goddamn the Religious Right is so ****ing stupid. You are handing Obama his re-election on a silver platter with this legislative morality bull****.

It's the economy stupid! I mean do people care more about their neighbor yanking it to YouPorn or that gas prices have been shooting through the roof? Exactly.

Our theocracy is almost here. Our pastor and all true believer pastors have been preaching theocracy for decades and it is finally about to come to pass. Our double secret code words are about to be signaled across the nation. Excellent!

We have the country split in to different regional denominations. You might want to start thinking about which denominational region you want to live in and get to preparing for the move (provided of course, you dont want to be Assemblies of God/Pentecostals which will have the formerly called Oklahoma in it). Its new name shall be Assembly of the Penticostal States.

You could move to CathEastCoastlic, or the Southern Baptifederates, or the Western Federation of Mormon States, and last but not least the Midwestern PresbiLutherans.

Oh btw, Obama is currently behind both Romney and Santorum in 3 different polls. Not that that matters (unless Obama is in the lead).

I think the war on porn is a worthy cause for ministers, psychologists and so on, because the president has so much more to worry about than porn.

Santorum is reinforcing his image of being in favor of a Christian theocracy, an image that will turn off independents and likely hand the reelection to Obama.

On the other hand, we have yet to see anybody in the academia, or psychology tackle the issue of pornography. Because porn is considered anti-religion, and anti-old rules, many on the feminist camp, and secularist camp who personally hate porn, do not have the courage to stand against it for fear of validating theological theories and mores.

what happens when the choice is the winner of Santorum/Romney and Obama?

do the people that want a theocracy even show up to vote when it's a choice between RomneyCare and ObamaCare?

Albo,
You clearly don't hang with too many feminists. If you want to get a ringing earfull, just trot down to your local women's center and ask to speak with someone who can explain 'objectification of women' to you. (the sound of running feet, shattering glass, and then a delayed thud will be you, hurling yourself from the nearest window to make the rant stop).
Porn is not a top line issue because there are a bunch of other things we need work on first. Secondly, it feeds something deep in the male psyche. Some cave art is arguably porn. And that was from 40,000 years BCE. If women haven't gotten men to stop being silly in that length of time, a Rick Santorum jihad has little chance of success.

The genie is already out of the bottle on adult porn, thanks to the internet. I laugh at hotels/motels being listed as a conduit of adult porn. How many have wifi and guests can get anything on their laptop that they want?

In my opinion, Santorum is just being a typical politician trying to sell something that sounds good to his narrow target audience that is not at all practical or reasonable.

I agreed that personally feminists detest the treatment of women in porn, but as a matter of policy, as a matter of national outcry they remain quiet for fear of validating and aligning themselves with what is considered a religious stance.

I'd take cave porn, over the borderline pedophilia that's out there today, in a heat beat.

I think in its current extreme zeal it's new to the last 100 years or so. Could be wrong. But I don't recall any candidate like Sanctimorium having a real chance at a nomination. (Pat Robertson didn't.) It's rather daring in a way: There are plenty of Christians, and all you have to do is tap those deep veins of guilt, as the TV evangelists know!

I know a lot of Christians. In fact, almost everyone I know are. I am curious as to what "guilt" we feel that evangelists are tapping in to?

The Christians I know are the happiest people I am ever around. Seems they wouldn't be if they were full of some presumed guilt. So I was just curious as to what proof you have about this guilt that I as a born again Christian am supposed to be feeling so I can start.

Or are you just spewing again without any actual facts. Not saying that's the case, just saying I never hear this guilt being discussed.

If you mean the guilt of sin, we are washed clean of that. I promise I don't give it a second thought beyond praising the Lord for his sacrifice on my behalf. Certainly no guilty feeling there, just thankfulness for his grace. Maybe I'm doing it wrong.

Did you mean 10 or 100? Prohibition comes to mind. The KKK supported a lot of successful politicians back in the day based on religious beliefs. Congress tried to go after porn in the 60's and Reagan did as well. Reagan ran on moral issues. This is not a new thing, what I think has changed is that there are a lot more folks that aren't religious or maybe I should say ANTI-religion that stay vocal and like to talk loudly about how stupid people with conservative morals are.

I think MR2 is correct. Santorum could actually address an issue that's relevant to most Americans, but instead he presents the evangelical card.

It's like being thrown a home run pitch (the economy), but waiting for the difficult slider (porn is evil mmmmkay?). He needs to leave the porn issue, which I think is a relevant one, to the churches and researchers.

because candidates often propose a myriad of ideas to appeal to many different groups that might be listening - and as most of us know - or should - rarely follow thru with finishing all of them.......i think the concept is called "campaigning"

As a moderate, hated by both the left and the right, my observation is that the right wants to get in my bedroom (regulate morals) and the left wants to get into my wallet (raise taxes on all of old farts who worked hard and saved their money). I'm afraid, that regulating morals is not a winning argument for the right. Too many young women believe that the right to control their bodies should not be regulated by the Government.
Any attempt to limit reproductive choice will be a disaster for the GOP in Nov.

At my age, I think I'll go with those who will protect my economic freedom.

AlboSooner

We must be careful not to make generalizing statements, because they lead to fallacies.

If you oppose the idea that the government of the people can pass laws to prohibit immoral behavior, then that position leads to a big problem. Who then should protect children from acts done to them in bedrooms? Who then can pass laws to stop abuse of animals in the bedroom?

We always have to moderate our position, and find a common ground based on common sense. Yes the government of the people can legislate morality, because morality comes before the law, and the law enforces the morality on those who oppose morality with their behavior. While I don't want the government to pass laws governing every aspect of my life, I do think the government can pass laws that govern even my bedroom.

This is nothing new of course. Every civilization since the ancient Babylonians with the Code of Hammurabi, to the American republic with the US constitution, has had a code of conduct, a set of morals which have served as the basis for the law that have ensured the advancement of those civilizations.
