Oklahoma football signee Courtney Gardner was arrested over the weekend for obstructing a peace officer.

According to a report from the Reno Gazette-Journal, Gardner was arrested around 1 a.m. Sunday after a vehicle he was riding in was stopped by sheriff's deputies. The driver, Ardian Smith, was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence and other traffic violations.
“During contact with the driver, Gardner became belligerent,” said Armando Avina, a spokesman for the Washoe County Sherrif's Office. “There were five occupants, and the deputy noted an immediate smell of alcohol and marijuana. Somebody (in the car) said, ‘Don't you know who we are? We're Division I athletes.'”
Avina said Gardner, 21, continued to yell at the deputy, who called in back-up units.
This is Gardner's second misdemeanor arrest in the Reno area in the last 2½ years, according to the Gazette-Journal. He was arrested for minor in possession of alcohol in November 2009.
The 6-foot-3, 215-pound Gardner played two seasons at Sierra College in Rocklin, Calif., and became one of the most sought-after juco receiver recruits in the country. He had given a verbal commitment to Arkansas but switched late in the recruiting process to Oklahoma. He has two years of eligibility at Oklahoma.

Misunderstanding.
COP: "i'm the Sherrif, Washoe County."
Gardner: "Soon to be Cleveland sir. Have you been drinking?"
Cop: "You're a long way from Ohio son, you dealing in drugs?"
Garnder: "No sir, I'm a Sooner!"
Cop: "You sooner be what? Don't mess with me. Washoe County, do you understand?"
Gardner: "Cleveland sir, at least next semester anyway. You see I'm going to play football for OU."
Cop: "You're under arrest son for being recklessly obscure."

It may be called a "misdemeanor", but I think it's a major big-time issue when a young man gets "belligerent" with an officer. I'll be perfectly happy if he never steps foot on campus.

not a good sign in any of this.

it's not like OU athletes never have run-ins with Norman's Finest

I say yank the scholly. I'm sorry, he is trouble. If you are in a car that the driver is getting arrested for DUI and the cop smells alcohol and weed in the car. Then STFU sit there and be quiet and follow orders. If you can't, I seriously doubt you can meet the requirements of a D-1 football program they so famously flashed to the cop. Tell him buh-bye look for another school.

Belligerent with an officer can be saying no to an officer...LOL

Not really that big of an issue, IMO.

And then they weren't division I athletes anymore.

This is Gardner's second misdemeanor arrest in the Reno area

Don't ever mess with Reno's finest.

http://www.thewrap.com/files/reno_dangle_911.jpg

If they had been stopped by Ray Ray it would have been a non-issue, but if you reject Dangle's advances, that's obstruction.

so who were the other Division I athletes?

There was an episode of CSI that dealt with a Reno deputy who got tricked by a hooker, it was Garcia :adoration:

LOL. I saw Garcia (don't know his name) on Comedy Central once (doing a stand up show). He really wasn't funny...but he played his character on Reno 911! perfect. They all did.

Don't believe everything that's written.

BTW....Unless all misdemeanors are going to be Capitol offenses under NCAA Rules and every athlete that gets one is going to be executed, I think its in poor taste to comment on pulling a kids Scholly. Kids make mistakes and I think as adults they have the right to learn from them and pay for them just as anyone else would. If some Cop pulled you over and thought you were being a smart a$$, Im betting you wouldn't want to lose your job over it.

I agree with you. But I also hope that Coach Stoops has already let him know that there is exactly zero slack left in the leash for him.

The article reads like he had a previous run in with law enforcement for possession. Now, he's in a vehicle with what the cop said smelled like pot. A one time random act of stupidity is explainable, but two incidents start a trend. And, this trend does not have a good trajectory.

Welcome, to the Stoops' woodshed, Mr. Div. 1.

I think that's a safe bet. I'm sure the "Josh Jarboe" talk is coming soon, if not already. Stoops is pretty consistent about this kind of thing.
