The U.S. has lost market share of global tourism, from 17% to 12%, over the last decade. Lengthy, bureaucratic wait-times for visas are the main reason. The avg household income of a Brazilian tourist visiting the U.S. is 100K and spends around 6k visiting. But wait-times and other hassle factors drive them to carribean or european trips instead.

Tourism used to be our largest export as measured by foreign currency brought in to U.S.

Obama admin is streamlining the process for Brazilians and low-risk Chinese and adding Taiwan to visa waiver list. If we can reclaim our market share, we can add over 1 million private sector jobs and and additional $860 billion in economic activity.

My hats off to Obama. A liberal democrat is at his best when he acts like a liberal republican.

Quit trying to pump sunshine up our ***. If you're going to spout out these numbers, at least provide some back up...

Turd, dude, have you ever visited the American embassy in an overseas country? It's like major big time crazy **** up. So, the minor embassy guy joined the state department because he really wanted to be posted to Greece, but instead got posted to Thailand and instead of enjoying life, he's stuck trying to dissuade the humpteenth guy in any particular day that there is no such thing as love at first sight with a Thai go-go girl. So, he takes his anger out on legitimate tourists who just want to spend a few thousand dollars to see the statue of liberty.

What, you don't believe me?

The tourism initiative is part of an executive order Obama signed. Its goal is to boost nonimmigrant visa processing capacity in China and Brazil by 40 percent this year; expand a Visa Waiver Program that allows participating nationals to travel to the U.S. for stays of 90 days or less without a visa....

... the U.S. share of spending by international travelers fell from 17 percent to 11 percent between 2000 and 2010, due to increased competition and changes in global development, as well as security measures imposed after Sept. 11, 2001, according to the White House.

The approach was welcomed by Brazilian tourists Lilian Lara and Lindbergh Souza, who shopped along the resort's streets hours before the president's speech. Souza said the visa process was expensive, at $500, and time-consuming for Brazilians who don't live close to consuls in Rio de Janiero and Sao Paulo. "The whole process took me six months," Souza said.

There was always a guy or two on the ship that fell into that. It was humorous and sad at the same time.

That's fine...

Is he also going to beef up the investigation of those that overstay their visa?

Yes, he'll have the U.S Marshalls deputize Sheriff Joe to detain anyone who looks Brazilian or Tiawanese.

Make Disneyland e-verify the visa expiration date before selling anyone a 3-day pass.

Keep capital gains tax rates really high so they can't afford to stay.

Would the global economic crisis have a positive influence on tourism or a negative influence?

While the few wealthy Brazilians may come and spend 6k, the majority non-wealthy would come and stay.
