I am graduating with my PhD this May, and I plan on renting a Doctoral Robe/Gown for the commencement. However, I have accepted a faculty position where I will be expected to attend graduations 2 times annually.

My question: Do you who are faculty know of any means to find a gown that's cheaper than the 400 dollars I was quoted here in our Student Union?

TIA.

Church supply store's sell black robes with the three stripes on the sleeves because some pastors with divinity doctorates wear them in the pulpit. The hood you ought to get from your school, because the colors on the outside are school specific. The hood lining is based on your degree. At least that was the case for me.

Speechless: Judge Donald Thompson's Courtroom Behavior

Update 09/23/05: Thompson's trial starts. It will be "graphic" (http://lizditz.typepad.com/i_speak_of_dreams/2005/09/judge_thompsons.html)
Update 01/21/05: Thompson has been charged with felony public indecency (http://lizditz.typepad.com/i_speak_of_dreams/2005/01/the_judge_donal.html)
http://lizditz.typepad.com/i_speak_of_dreams/images/thompson-judge-creekco2.jpgUpdate August 2004: Thompson tries to duck felony charges by resigning (http://lizditz.typepad.com/i_speak_of_dreams/2004/08/thanks_and_good.html)I try to keep this a non-political, pretty-much-squick-free kind of reading experience. But I must say, the antics of Judge Donald D. Thompson, an elected District Judge of Creek County (http://www.ohwy.com/ok/y/y40037.htm), Oklahoma, of the Twenty-fourth Judicial District of the state of Oklahoma, sitting at the courthouse in Sapulpa, Oklahoma (http://www.city-data.com/city/Sapulpa-Oklahoma.html) --you can take a tour of Sapulpahere (http://www.worldisround.com/articles/8331/). The town, Salpulpa (http://www.cityofsapulpa.net/) even has a daily newspaper, the Sapulpa Daily Herald (http://www.sapulpadailyherald.com/)--well, Judge Thompson really went too far. It's not a joke when it involves a razor, exposed genitals, and subsequent lotion applications. During murder trials. The Smoking Gun (http://www.thesmokinggun.com/archive/0624041pump1.html) has the lubricious details. The good news is that Oklahoma Attorney General Drew Edmondson said he didn't think information alleged in the ouster petition against Thompson would result in overturning any trials where Thompson presided. What is kind of, well, funny in a sick way, is that in July of 2003, Thompson rejected a plea bargain and sentenced John Marquez (http://209.157.64.200/focus/f-news/940406/posts)to life in prison for spitting on a police officer. And no, the Donald D. Thompson is not the Donald D. Thompson (http://www.thesolchronicles.com/pages/Author.html) who wrote the Sol Chronicles. (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0595233112/qid=1088400864/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_1/104-3591094-5053536?v=glance&s=books) But I hope he gets some sales out of this embarassment.Oh, no. The "murder trials" the AG was referring to were the Vomberg and Brooks trials, wherein 18-month old Skyla Brooks was beaten, raped, bitten, and killed. (http://www.ardmoreite.com/stories/032200/new_toddler.shtml) By the mom, Brooks, and the boyfriend, Vomberg (http://www.sapulpadailyherald.com/articles/2003/12/31/news/untitled 8.txt).
Thompson served six years in the state House of Representatives starting in 1975; by 1988 (when he presided over the Hain/Lambert death penalty case) he was a the district judge. He ran unoposed in 1998.Of course, his attorney (http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dws/dn/latestnews/stories/062504dntexokjudge.a1517.html) says Judge Thompson did not perform the acts of which he is accused. Too bad there are multiple witnesses.Attorney: Sex-act accusations against judge false 01:38 PM CDT on Friday, June 25, 2004OKLAHOMA CITY – Allegations that a district court judge engaged in improper conduct involving sexual acts are false and are part of an effort to attack and embarrass him, his attorney said.District Judge Donald D. Thompson violated the code of judicial conduct "by his repeated use of a device known as a penis pump during non-jury and jury trials in his courtroom and in the presence of court employees while serving in his capacity as a district judge," Oklahoma Attorney General Drew Edmondson wrote in a petition filed Wednesday with the Court of the Judiciary. The sound of Thompson using the pump was heard by a number of witnesses, who said that the noise sounded "like air being pumped or released" from a blood pressure cuff.Thompson, 57, hasn't been available for comment but his attorney, Clark Brewster, said Thursday that Thompson is "horrified" by the accusations."The whole genesis for the allegations involves a well-known courthouse joke," Brewster said. "About the time he turned 50, he was given a gag gift by a hunting buddy, a penis pump, in poor taste. It sat in the courthouse the past several years and was in various places."Many of the lawyers and court personnel were aware of the pump, which became the butt of jokes, Brewster said. "The individuals that we believe are behind this attempt to embarrass the judge took that opportunity to blow it into a much more sinister set of allegations."The petition also alleged that Thompson masturbated in view of his female court reporter during a number of court proceedings. The judge admitted the penis pump was under the bench during a murder trial on Aug. 22 and at other times but denied using the device, Edmondson's petition states."A couple of police officers upset with rulings he made tried to make it something it was not," Brewster said. "Thompson's not going to tolerate these falsehoods."Sapulpa police officers wouldn't comment on Brewster's statement Thursday. The officers, the police chief and court personnel are listed as witnesses who were present at a criminal trial in Thompson's court. The attorney general said Thompson violated the code of judicial ethics that requires high standards of conduct, among other things. He also committed an offense involving moral turpitude, Edmondson alleges.Lisa K. Foster, a court reporter for Thompson for 15 years, told investigators she witnessed the judge's sexual behavior "15 to 20 times." She was fired after the judge heard she had cooperated with an investigation into his activities, Edmondson said. Also fired was Zelma Hindman, the judge's secretary, who talked to investigators, Edmondson said.

Congrats man. Definitely have to purchase the hood through the school or affiliate since you want to get the colors. Also need to check if the school has a school specific gown. Some put the school colors on the sleeves etc...

OH NO! Are we talking about Halloween colors? Okay, the robes may be used 3 times each year, but don't scare the kids.

I love that you are celebrating your achievement with us. My only suggestion is to have that robe and the sheepskin parchment dry cleaned at least a couple of times before hanging it. j/k ;)

Mucho dinero for any poor grad student. But if you are staying in academia, then springing for a high quality cap and gown is
wise. Or if you have parents or sugar momma/daddy who might buy you a graduation gift, it's a good suggestion.

Ph.D. gowns have large amounts of velvet and look pretty cool. $400 may sound like a lot, but it's much cheaper than a wedding gown and you'll probably wear much more often.... over the course of your career, more often than any suit you have.

You're very welcome. My main advice would be after May take a break from being a student for a while. I made the mistake of going right into a certification program after I graduated. I'm starting to feel like I will be in school the rest of my life.

At Tulsa, your robe and hood was factored into a "graduation fee." Which, BTW, I unsuccessfully tried to avoid because I didn't go to graduation, which was three hours of my life I would never have gotten back. Besides, graduations aren't for the graduates, they are for the graduates' moms and dads. I have the robe and hood in the plastic bag in which it was issued to me somewhere.

It was more like: fine take some more of my money so I can get the heck out. I've never used mine again either but academics use them every year.
