View Full Version : Most famous/popular/synonymous Sooner number?

I was reading an article about how some numbers are considered "the" number in certain cities (i.e. 7 in Denver, 23 in Chicago, etc.), and it got me thinking about what the most popular (or famous) number relates to the Sooners.

For me, it's always been 44. But, I don't think that number would be the most identified with the Sooners, so I thought I would ask the question:

What number do you consider synonymous with the Sooners?

It changes form year to year. That's why we don't retire numbers at OU.

That's what I figured would be the most synonymous.

Most programs don't retire numbers, especially in the NCAA. I know that the popularity of numbers change with the players, but everyone has one number that they relate to the Sooners.

It don't matter what number they wear. Its the interlocking OU on that crimson helmet that makes us puff our chests out and scares the s*** out of visitors. :)

#20 for me for Sims. I remember when Dupree came in I couldn't believe he wasn't #20. I thought all great RB's would be #20.

i can't go with 44 - only one all american with that jersey #

and i dont think Bosworth is THE face of the history of the program

i'd tend to lean to #20 but i'm not even completely sold on that one

93 would not be a bad choice if you were going to have one. Selmon, McCoy, Liggins. If Casillas hadn't been one off at 92 that number would probably be cemented.

Actually, 1 would be pretty good. J.C. Watts, Danny and Mark Bradley, Tony Jefferson. 20 and 14 are both solid as well. And don't forget 88.

This is a thread we've done before... I think I'll start another we've done before....

There's definitely a legit arguement for that number as well. David Overstreet, Dupree, & Joe Wylie off the top of my head.

I don't know that I would put it at the top, but I think 38 at least deserves a mention.

Loved that soonerstats website. It was great fun looking up those fantastic Sooners from the early 70's when I used to go to games with my late Grand-dad.

Good times.

I found that website a few years ago, and I think the first time I found it, I spent about 2 hours reminiscing.

47!!! It's not a number worn by one particular player, but it's the most famous/popular number associated with the beast that is OU football.

Surprised there hasn't been a mention of #28. My son thinks that number is OU football. That's because he first became a fan when AD was running at OU. Antonio Perkins and T Lewis kept it alive.
