SoonerSports.com put together a great piece on the evolution and locations of the football field. Great job by Jason and Tory at SoonerSports.com

Oklahoma Memorial Stadium's rich heritage has not hindered its evolution, a never-ending growth fueled by the Sooners' overwhelming popularity. Almost since its inception, the stadium has been a work in progress. View a map (http://www.soonersports.com/facilities/memorial_stadium_history.html#locations) of OU's current campus with approximate locations of all four of the Sooners' home fields.

I don't think so. I doubt there will be anything until after he retires.

What would the stadium look like now, if this had come to be?

In his book, "Oklahoma Kickoff" I believe Harold Keith related that an early site for a campus/home games was on a vacant field on which Ellison Hall, the former student infirmary, is located, which is on N.E. corner of Brooks & Elm.

I like how the older version of the Stadium didn't have fences and gates. :D

Field Locations

The original University football field (1) was located on the prairie north of the present Holmberg Hall. OU's first game in 1895 was played there against the Oklahoma City Town Team. Later Oklahoma teams played about 100 yards east of the first field at a spot also unnamed (2). Both of these early fields consisted solely of a smooth wire fence stretched along both sidelines.

In 1905, in Bennie Owen's first season as coach, Boyd Field (3) was laid out just west of the present Field House. It was named for the University's first president, Dr. David Ross Boyd. A grandstand seated 500 and the field was surrounded by a thick Bois d'Arc hedge that was the despair of small boys trying to see the game without paying admission.

The very first game played at the current site of Owen Field (4) took place on October 20, 1923. Oklahoma defeated Washington University of St. Louis, 62-7, before a few loyal fans on a bitterly cold day.

As the OP said, head over to Soonersports.com for the whole story. It's really interesting to read about the history of one of CFB's greatest cathedrals.

Incidentally, here are a few things I didn't realize that I learned from the article:

1. The all time attendance record was set last year against A&M.
2. Kliff Kinsbury holds the record for pass completions in a game on Owen Field (41).
3. Buster Rhymes still holds (tied) the record for longest kick off return.
4. The most points scored on Owen Field is 79 against North Texas, in 2007 under Stoops (I would have guessed a Switzer era game).

Sam's first game, and the beginning/beginning of the end of the Todd Dodge era at North Texas. "Coach, they're not even trying to disguise their defense!" LOL
