View Full Version : Strange sighting in the sky last night

I'm about halfway between OKC and Tulsa. Last night at dusk I saw three large military-type helicopters escorting a large plane. It was a ways off to the north, probably flying right along I-44/Turner Turnpike. The plane looked like an old prop job.

Unfortunately I was in the middle of helping a neighbor chase down a cow that had escaped, and couldn't pay close attention to the show. It was quite a site, though, just as the sun was setting, and moving at a snails pace. I couldn't tell if the plane was just a cargo type, or maybe an old bomber.

Anyone else see this, or hear about it?

I'm guessing if it would have been in the desert it would be in the UFO news today.

Do you think this sighting has something to do with those missing guinea hens?

The way they were flying, very close with one chopper on each side and one in the rear and at a low altitude made the whole thing look like maybe this plane wasn't the most reliable thing in the air. The route along I-44 seemed like maybe a navigational aid or something.

Just one of those curious things you can't get out of your mind. Like the guinea heads.

Maybe someone in Pixley or Crabwell Corners saw it, too.

HC-130 either practicing formation or actually refueling...?

That was my first thought. Growing up in Oklahoma, I saw tons of C-130s (all varieties, AC, HC, etc). I'm thinking that is probably what it was.

Is mid-air refueling directly above an interstate the safest place for such an activity?

Take your own advice, old man. ;)

That looks VERY similar to what I saw, and makes a lot of sense. Who knows if it was practice or not, but I think this might be it. The shape of the prop-plane is right. Even from a distance it didn't really look like a WWII era plane. It DID look like the plane in the video. A big, lumbering affair. I didn't realize a tanker could fly slow enough to refuel choppers, and I'm an Air Force brat.

I live about 9-10 miles south of I-44/Hwy 66. To be more accurate, the formation looked about 3-4 miles north of me, which would have put I-44 4-5 miles out their left window. So maybe that tiff was really my fault.

Its just amazing the info you can pick up around here.

I've seen a few odd things in the sky before. About a month ago, I saw some lights in the sky that looked like stars (only closer) that were fast moving and would make sudden changes in direction and speed. There were a half dozen of them all randomly scattered around. Not saying it was a UFO, but it was definitely strange.

In 2004, I saw this giant fireball in the sky. It looked like a meteor you'd see in the movies with flames coming out the back. It was heading to the ground, but I didn't see where it landed because my view became obscured by the topography. I kept checking the news the next day for any mention of a meteor landing, but I never found anything.

Also, I used to lay out naked on my roof at night with a giant sign that said "PROBE ME!"

Although the C-130 isn't a WWII era airplane, it's not much newer. Developed in the Korean War and saw combat in Vietnam. Doesn't look anything like the cargo/refueling planes being produced now.

I saw it too, cleller. Friday night about 6 p.m., I was at Memorial and Western in OKC. It was heading east, crossing Western maybe 5 miles to the north of me. Glad you posted this, I was wondering all weekend what the heck that was.

Lemme just head down to the warehouse district of Bartlesville. There's a guy there, I don't know his name, wears a suit, trenchcoat and smokes Winstons. He seems to know about stuff like this, but is very closed mouth about it. Drives a navy blue Ford.
I'll just get my flashlight, 'cause those warehouses where I meet him are really dark. But I'll only carry the little one, with like 2 DD batteries.
And my Sig Sauer.
In case I'm not back in time, talk to my partner, Sully.

I used to fly C-130s and we did refueling missions. Typically it was special ops practice for long range missions.

The other thought might be a drug interdiction where they were escorting a plane that crossed the border. I know Oklahoma is a prime drop off point.

Happy for the confirmation. Wasn't that something? Makes you wonder how people can go about their business without noticing. Very interesting stuff. I'm lucky to be out in the boondocks where that catches your attention.
