Did anyone else notice that we didn't ink any kickers yesterday? Is that a sign we're happy with what we have, or have we just given up?

Stoops said we filled all our needs at his presser with no mention of kickers. Wasn't Hunnicutt just a RS FR last season? He looked solid to me, FWIW. We have Tress Way for 1 more year.

I'm not sure Bob considers kicker a need! ;)

Hunnicut kicked well for us last season so I think we're set.

I think Hunnicut might be ok as well, but wondered what others thought. Did Jimmy finally graduate? I just hope he's in no way an option.

Do we have a kicker that can kick a touchback yet?

Yes, with an Oklahoma wind at his back.

Jimmy has moved on to the hallowed halls of past Sooner greats. He provided more heart pounding drama than about any other player in recent year. It was the most cardio exercise some our couch potato fans received, and they are going to miss him, even if they don't know it now.

He was "The most interesting kicker in the world"(TM)

(TM) was mine. :)

Jimmy did know how to put some excitement into the mundane X-point.

I saw on a small website we got a punter...maybe? Not sure!

I could see us letting some kids try to walk-on as punters/kickers.

Punter Jack Steed from Katy Texas (Cinco Ranch) was offered a grayshirt. This means that he will pay his own way and redshirt in 2012 and will get a scholarship when Tress Way graduates. He averaged about 40 yards a punt last year and was a back-up qb in high school.

I think the coaches are still waiting on that one kicker from Montana to arrive on campus.

We have Hunnicutt, O'hare and Hosek. Not sure why anyone thinks we need a Kicker.

We have Tress Way and Dylan Seibert as punters.

I'd say we'll need a kicker and a punter next year though....maybe more than one each if the backups aren't able to convince the Coaches they can step in if needed.

If you get a Gray Shirt that shows huge promise....it might be a good idea to give him a shot though.

Wasn't it just 2011 when people were complaining about having too many schollies tied up in kickers?

I've followed recruiting for a while, but I can't remember us ever targeting a kicker. Are there any even on scholarship? Maybe I just completely slept through that.

Stoops offered the 9th rated kicker in the country in this class in Nick Jordan from Coppell but he committed to the Longhorns. FYI.

Yep. And it was 2010 they were wondering why Bob didn't use a schollie to find a us a kicker. Maybe he got to many last year but if he had doubts about the kickers he probably would have done that to solve the obvious problem we had in 2010.

Remember when Matt Moreland, a Senior, suddenly left the team? Maybe that Forced Bob to take in more kickers and reduce the risk of not having a kicking game. If we hadn't have had Hunnicutt last year, 10-3 might have been worse because Jimmy Stevens was obviously injured and his kicking career over.

I noticed that good (highly touted) kickers are very few and far between. Oh well, we have Way and Hunnicutt around for next season.

The big 12 and all other conferences do it too.

What the SEC does is oversign...or sign more kids than they have scholarships for.

Then they either just throw those kids away or grayshirt them.

Do you go to the games early?

I'll keep saying this...

Hosek IMO is nearly as good as Hunnicutt and he might even be able to kick farther than Hunnicutt. Don't be surprised if you see him kicking some FGs this year.

...but seriously: how many chances did he get?

No idea but I saw him try one more time in warm up last year and he looked like he was in need of morphine after he kicked. He was done. It was sad to watch. I hope he's OK.

I wish Jimmy no long-lasting pain, but he was painful to watch. Pun intended!

It was obvious that it wasn't some head problem....he had strained or injured something and couldn't ever get over it. He's pretty short but his upper legs looked like he was one of those guys that could leg press every weight on the Machines in the Switzer Center.

Jimmy's problem is he wasn't a good kicker before he got hurt, being hurt just gave him an excuse to be bad.

Maybe. I mean....he was doing good enough to get the job. I really think something happened and you know how Bob is about injuries. I think Jimmy kept trying to overcome the injury and Bob didn't have anyone to kick for us. It just got worse and once Bob found Hunnicutt we never saw Jimmy again. That might explain why they kept Jimmy on the Team. He played even when injured? Just a thought.

Maybe I just wrote a good Movie? :D

Where's that OU Movie Thread....

Was Jimmy injured for his entire career? Because he was certainly bad for his entire career!

Kicking is for wuss teams. From now on we always go for it on 4th down (and make it), score TDs, and go for 2. National championship guaranteeeeed!

Hunnicut is a RS Freshman. 3 more years and he is a keeper. Look at Ben Grogan, Arlington Martin, Arlington, Texas. He took the job from Jaden Oberkrom who had signed with TCU. Grogan took over 4 games deep into the season and was the 5A Allstate kicker. He is a Jr. - BEN GROGAN, Arlington Martin, Jr. -- 8-10 FGs, long 52;25-25 PATs
I believe TCU will still take Oberkrom even though he sat on the bench.
Kicker: Austin Shoemake, Frisco Centennial, Jr. is a Jr. and is very good. He was a 2nd team Allstate in 4A.
Plenty good kickers if somebody scouts them.

Jimmy's problem is he wasn't a good kicker before he got hurt, being hurt just gave him an excuse to be bad.Harsh and inaccurate.Jimmy ended his career as OU's 8th all-time scorer with 180 PAT and $@ FG. Was he great? No. Did he have limited range? Yes. Did he suck? Well.if he did, then apparently so did most kickers in OU history.

Nick Jordan-Texas Kicker recruit.

As a senior at Coppell, Jordan connected on five of his nine field-goal attempts.

That's good news. I really thought Hunnicutt kicked well as the season progressed, and I think Way should get some serious attention for the Ray Guy award....he'll kick one off the side of his foot once in a while, but when he connects...the kid has a leg!

He was invited to the all star game and Stoops offered him. I'll go ahead and take a top 10 rated placekicker in the country. We also got a preferred walkon kickoff specialist from Highland Park in Nick Rose who routinely puts it out of the endzone. We're trying to replace all kicking duties from Justin Tucker and I will also say that the kicking game is an underappreciated aspect of the game.

Herr Scholz,
I agree with you on having a top kicker. I have avidly watched kickers the last several years. Problem that some scout recruiters have are the stats. Not very many high schools have designated deep snappers and holders. I have seen film showing all kinds of messups. If the ball is skipped across the ground or over the holders head, it show as a miss in the kickers stats. Recruiters either do not have time to check this or they are going by stats and kicking camp ratings. Most kickers are offered after National Signing day. If a scholly is left, they will use it.
This is my opinion and take it however you want

I believe he would be an excellent walkon.
