View Full Version : My wild neighbors

I love living back in the US and living in the country.

These are some pics taken by a critter cam of a guest hunter on my property. I have had so much fun looking through them that I decided to go buy my own critter cams. Anyone have any suggestions on what to buy? Anyone have their own critter cam pics to share?

Enjoy

I been wanting one of those, too. Looked around at amazon's reviews. Another case of you usually get what you pay for most of the time. Problem is, I don't want to pay for a good one.

Wanting to set one out with some foul attractant to get some pics of the coyotes that constantly stalk the place. Got a big time hunter friend that claims coyote hunting is some of the most challenging.

I wonder how my dogs would react to those critters. Methinks they'd freak out at the deer and chase the turkeys.

Trailcams are a little tricky. You can get them cheap or you can spend a fortune. They even have them with wireless phone type adapters that will send the pics directly to your computer. The low end ones seem to have a lot of lemons but if you get one that works, they will do just fine. Some do daytime only, others have a flash(can spook game) or infra red, I prefer the infra red type. Battery life is one of the more important factors to me. I had one that used a 6 volt up in about 5 days and that's not good at all. I have settled on a couple that use 8 AA batteries and will go a long time without changing them.
I'll try to post a few pics from each camera but I prefer the new moultrie m-100 to the bushnell. Both are around $110

Notice how much further back the nighttime moultrie pics show.

I've got 9 of the moultrie IR-45's. Used a whole bunch of many other brands, these give best pics and extremely long battery life. Get an 8 gig sd card and they will hold around 4000 pics before full. They use 6 c batteries. They also take very good video.

Thanks achiro for sharing your pics and thanks to everyone for the advice. I bought a Moultrie D-55IR infra red camera at Atwoods for $129. It uses up to 16GB SD card (which I bought seperately) and 6 C batteries. I have a month to fiddle with the settings before returning to Thailand for 6 months. Hopefully, I have some pics when I return in time for football season.

Achiro-

Hope your still reading, where did you get the shot of the bobcat? Here in Oklahoma?

I saw one at night out in the Osage Hills, but have never seen one in daytime, or spotted any obvious tracks. Dang, looks like I'm heading to Atwood's tomorrow.

That's what I was sayin earlier. A bob at 3pm, and a healthy looking one to boot. Just a great shot. Look at the second photo at how he blends in with that small tuft of grass. No wonder I've only seen one.

That was in Kansas this past year. I've seen a several over the years in OK though. The coolest was a mom and two young ones playing with each other under my tree stand for a couple hours. They looked like a group of house cats bouncing around, batting at each other and rolling around in the leaves. It was pretty awesome.

And we also know the pic was taken on 11-13-11. Looks like the area had also been recently baled. Most areas around here were so dry there wasn't much baling going on.

Ah, only one real way to find out. Wait, and hope.

I went to the Atwoods in Sapulpa today. They had two cameras, $99 and $129. (plus 6 c cell batteries) Unfortunately, I had just forked over $200 on some vet bills, and was too pissed to drop another $100 on a wildlife camera.

Its easier to look at someone else's pictures on here, anyway.

Coyotes are after my chickens on a regular basis. Generally they run whenever they see you. At certain times they seem to be so hungry and depressed they'll just stand a look at you. When the German Shepherd or 000 Buck shot head their way, they are scared for sure. Also very fast.

In a strange coincidence, last night at dusk, a bobcat came up close to the house, trying to find a way into our chicken pen. Was very fun to watch, but I had one hen that was not yet inside, and was headed right toward the bobcat. I eventually scared it off, then fired off a shotgun round nearby to give it a good scare.

In retrospect, seeing the bobcat up close might just be worth the odd chicken sacrifice. Funny, because we'd been all over the area just a short while before with the dogs, etc. I suspect this cat knows alot more about our habits than I'd think.

Now I broke down and bought a camera at Dick's Sporting Goods in Tulsa. They had about 8 different kinds. First time in the place. Actually had a kid working back there that knew all about them. Impressive.

So now I'm on a mission to get pics of this bobcat. Got some leftover chicken livers and gizzards in the freezer that should help.

Cuddeback camera's are really good, but expensive.

I use the Bushnell Trophy Cam. It is small and uses 8 AA batteries that usually last about 4-6 months. Picture and video capabilities. Very affordable.

Plotwatcher cams look pretty cool, but I have never used one.

Thanks guys for recommendations on the critter cam.

It is a lot of fun.

I have 2 16 MB SD cards that I trade out each time we put out deer corn.

The last one I had 600+ pics of deer. The snapshots are set every 15 seconds, but that is enough to get an idea about it.

The motion activated camera caught almost all deer, no turkeys or wild hogs this time. The nightfime infra red flashes caught bucks driving the does off the corn. It also caught the bucks fighting and stomping and snorting and racoons ignoring them and eating the corn.. It is funny how all that works.

One night at like 4 AM at the OU Biostation I saw one next to my apartment. I was walking back to my apartment from the research building. The apartments have outside stairs and he was walking down them without a care in the world and passed right by my door. It was a little freaky seeing one that close with nothing but about 30 yards between me and him.
