Thought y'all might get a kick out of this. I was scanning in some of the dad's old newspaper clippings (he played DE at West Texas State)...and found this little surprise on the flip side of the article. Guess we squeaked by Kansas 7-6...in front of 60,000 fans.

Thanks for posting the clip...love reading old Sooner articles (but more-so seeing the images). I'm still on my quest to see the Sooners wear a white helmet again.

Didn't we go throwback in 03 against N Texas? I seem to remember white helmets that game.

I was about to say "yeah, a couple of times", but you found it for yourself. Nike did a "Pro Combat" home and away (with the white helmets for us), but I'd like to see a true throwback helmet with the stripe and TV numbers on the side. It'll never happen (at least no time soon), but I'd still like to see it.

Thanks for posting that cool clip. Did you notice the most interesting name in it? John Hadl...one of those great AFL quarterbacks (Joe Namath, Jack Kemp, Babe Parilli, Len Dawson, George Blanda, et al) from the '60s. QB'd the Chargers to early glory, I think with Lance Alworth and Cookie Gilchrist? Pretty sure he led them to one or more AFL Championships before the (1970?) merger with the old NFL.

First game of '03. We had a monsoon midway through it.

I think I saw enough of it in '09, in Lubbock.

Can you imagine that we now have 85,000 fans every Home Game but 50+ years ago in 1959....we had 60,000 Fans show up for a Game?

In the last 50 years we have added 25,000 seats.

Seems like we might ought to have that number up around 100,000 by now IMO.

I'd like to see another 10,000 pretty soon. I know lots of folks like the idea of bowling in the South EZ. I don't know if it's Possible without really messing up the Switzer Center underneath or creating a really expensive addition that maybe just putting in East side seating like we put over the East Side Stands up over the North EZ with more Skyboxes. I've heard Castiglione mention that if he had 11 more Donors like he had when we put up the East Side addition....he would have the East Side addition go all the way to the West Side Stands and the "U" would be Double Bowled all the way from the SE Side to the SW Side. No Idea how many Seats that would add but I don't know a whole lot of folks that like to sit atop the East Side stands so I have no idea how an Addition like that would go over. I get the feeling Bowling in the "U" on the South EZ would be more popular if it was something that could be done.

I saw Hadl play for the Chargers back in the 60's.

That is a gem.

According to SoonerStats.com, attendance at that game was 51,013 so whoever wrote that may have rounded up a bit. OU was 2-2 and ranked 18th going into that game, while Kansas was 3-2. Another tidbit is the part that says it was the Sooners 74th conference game without a defeat, a streak that ended the next week when Oklahoma lost to the nebbish in Lincoln.
