200 Illegal-Alien Workers Losing Their Jobs at Pacific Steel

Pacific Steel in Berkeley, Calif. is laying off 200 illegal-alien workers who weren't able to provide valid documents after an audit conducted by the Department of Homeland Security. Earlier this year, Immigration and Customs Enforcement requested the company's I-9 files and found that the paperwork for 200 workers, approximately one-third of the company's total workforce, didn't match up.
Pacific Steel is one of the largest and oldest steel foundries in the United States. The company operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week and pays its employees $18 an hour on average. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, California has the nation's second highest unemployment rate at 11.3%.
