Whenever we discuss how good of a Job Bob is doing as a coach , a true indicator could be the games OU won when OU was considered the Underdog.
I have a feeling OU under Bob has lost at least 2 games each year when OU was favored. Does anyone have any stats or comments on this ?

Most seasons when OU lost 2 games they were favored in the those 2 games. There are threads all over about this. They've only been dogs a handful of times and most of those were 2009, 2005, and 2006 seasons.

Off the top of my head, I'm guessing FSU in 2001 and Oregon in the Holiday Bowl. I wouldn't really count much from 1999 because there aren't any real underdogs when mediocre teams play other mediocre teams. We may have been an underdog a few times when we beat UT. Not sure about the KSU and NU games in 2000. Probably an underdog in the NU game for sure.

How many times have we been underdogs? That is the number that determines a good coach.

That's a tough question since OU hasn't lost two games each season.

Usually when Bob has a nice bowel movement in the AM things go well on the field.....

LSU...no. OU was a 6 pt favorite. USC opened as a 3 point dog but bettors moved it the other way. Vegas raked that night. @ Mizzu 2006 was a win I recall off the top of my head. Again, 2005, 2006, 2009 years OU was a dog several times.

Stupid thread. Just look at his record and compare to the rest of the country. That will tell you if he's done a good enough job.

There was a post on a competing website that talked about losses as the favorite......Bud had like 1, Barry 4, and Bob like 16 something.....

I think a case could be made for scholarship limits and competitivness of eras....but it was interesting data.

I think the 2005 was the best coaching ever done by the OU staff, when Bomar was kicked off the team and Paul Thompson came in as quarterback. Didn't win them all, but OU did win the Big XII Championship. Everyone just remembers OU not winning the bowl game, when certain players decide they wanted to go pro instead.....of winning one more game.

You're thinking of 06. 2005 was a train wreck.

So OU was an underdog the 28 other games they lost under Bud and 25 under Barry? That doesn't sound right. But yes, as you stated, upsets on the whole happen more often now than back then in all of college football.

other than FSU and TAM and Texas in the early 2000s , Bob has not beaten a strong favorit

I'd love it if someone challenged Bob in person on this. The media tried to do that with his away record versus his own record either this season or the last and Bob was all like "We have a big home winning streak so of course our road record is worse than our home record" or something like that.

So if you were to pose this to Bob, he would likely give the same bland response that some are giving here: Of course we don't have a strong favored-team record, because we're always favored, but can't always win!

2011 0-1
2010 1-0
2009 0-1
2008 0-1
2007 0-0 (unless we were underdog against Mizzou in the CCG, but I highly doubt it)
2006 0-1

So yeah we are rarely underdogs, and when we are it is for a good reason.
ESPN doesn't have lines past those years and I'm too lazy to look it up now.

What was the line on the 2006 Mizzu game @ Mizzu? I could have sworn OU was a 3 pt dog.

Nice insertion of the UO game as a win. I'm not being sarcastic. As far as I'm concerned we won that game.

I agree with others. We're favored in 95% of our games. When that's the case we're going to lose a lot more as favorites than win as underdogs.

I'd also point out that our program has a little cache which probably makes us favorites sometimes when we shouldn't be. Then again, guys in Vegas are smart and if they see a trend like this they'll start betting the other way and whatever perceived "overrating" in the lines will be minimized.

I suppose a good question would be: Is our win percentage as dogs greater than our loss percentage as favorites? Even that question is a littel biased because we're often favored by 20+ points but never dogs by 20+ points...

OU was a 1 point dog according to Goldsheet.
