View Full Version : The Vent Thread

So I am starting this thread for those who feel the need to recklessly abandon all common sense and rational thought to say what they want because a lot of it has been going around on this board. I pretty much ramble, but I just want to get this off my chest from what I've seen here lately.

1) First, I need to dispel the criticism young persons get from y'all old folks. No offense, but young people have many, many more distractions than when y'all did growing up. Sure we have playstation, wii, xbox, internet, and a whole host of other distractions, but the only reason old people moan about it all the time is because they secretly wish they had the same stuff growing up. Back to my real point though...These things are making young people more accessible to outside influence and other perefories. Young people haven't changed and we aren't doing anything different than you all did when you were younger. Thats right...we drink, smoke, get into fights; Not much of a difference is there? So just because we are more able to see what others are doing because of modern technology does not make one generation better or worse than the last. We are just more visible to the world. So please, please stop with the incessant "Young people now days speeches". WE ARE NOT DIFFERENT. We aren't lazy and entitled either. If you want to say that then do so, but keep in mind that young people did not create this economy, young people did not participate in the bailouts, young people are fighting for any job they get and to say they are entitled is ludicrous. They have to work harder to get less. There are more graduates, less jobs, and less corporations willing to pay what new graduates were paid before the recession.

2) These rumors floating around about our program are STUPID in all caps. My contention is that they wouldn't be rumors if someone had the cojones to come out and say how they feel. If you are accountable for your actions then there should be no reasons rumors exist. If you want to leave OU fine! It's still a good university and we won't miss you. Commitment, Integrity, Honor, Hardwork are things that make you successful no matter where you go. If there is a bad lockerroom, why run away? It's because you don't care enough to change it. You are merely aggravating the situation. If you leave it will happen to the class after and others. Why not change the attitude? Why not report wrongdoers? It's because no one wants to be accountable. If you want to attack my generation for one thing it is accountability. You can't count on 60% of my generation to stick it out through tough times. Yeah they work hard to get a job, but we are talking about doing the right thing and owning up to ones duties. The true travesty in America is the lack of accountability across the board. It has to start somewhere and if the coach won't do it then the players won't do it. So my thought on this is clear. BOB must fix the problem or he is the problem. It is that simple. You can love OU, but no coach or situation is bigger than OU. OU is my alma mater first and foremost and football will always be second behind the prestige and honor a degree bestows from OU. So as a fan base we need to hold these kids and BOB accountable.

3) Is OSU really in a better bowl than us? This sucks. 9-3 doesn't suck, but them being in the Fiesta does. For a team that has been bought to the top, it is a travesty to see money matter that much in selection to a school. No longer is academics considered, but it is whether the lockerroom is nice. Whoopty do you spend 20 minutes in a locker room. That is all for my rambles.

Let's see. I am 44. Guess that makes me a man. And an old folk depending on your age.

I have a Wii. And a smartphone. Between my wife and 3 kids we have 2 smartphones, 4 ipods, 2 ipads, 3 laptops, 2 PCs, and an Atari 2600 I sometimes hook up to play pac man and space invaders on with my boy. I have more than 12,000 songs downloaded from napster sitting on an external hard drive that I like to dip into now and again. I text. But not sext. I use facebook but my general feeling is, it's kinda lame and I am tired of hearing all my old fart friends whine about their lives so I am about to pull the plug. I think twitter is foolish and I would never follow or ask others to follow me. Especially any males - wtf?

Ahhh...so...lost my point there, oh yeah. Look whippersnapper, good for you to speak up and I for one won't disparage you because ya see, this is the internets and this is an entertainment board about OU football which I love myself but feel like we can criticize. I have two degrees from OU and I have spent roughly a loaded land rover on the university and continue to do so, and it hurts to see FB down because it drives so much of us Okies' identities.

But at the end of the day, none of this is near as important as other stuff in life. So let's keep it in perspective. Oh and, I bet you young dudes are getting way more leg on than the class of 85 did because of all yer fancy toys. I am married so I don't get to explore all the apps that young people use to hook up, but I know a coupla young guys who are average but get prodigious hookups using all that technology. So, if I were you I would not worry about old farts ripping on young people but would get out and enjoy your youth and stop wasting it on an OU message board populated with old farts and has beens.

To say that young people have more distractions these days is just wrong. There aren't more distractions, there are just DIFFERENT distractions. And I'm 55 and a digital editor for five news web sites, so I'm pretty familiar with technology and all its incarnations. My sons are gamers of the highest sort. And I think Facebook is just dumb. Twitter actually is far more useful in so many ways. I don't give a **** what anyone is doing at any random moment, but millions of people are on FB so I have to respect that it's a good way to get attention. But Twitter is shorter and just makes so much more sense, in my view.

Doesn't matter how old or young we all are, we all still have the same emotions. And yes, it sucks that the Pokes ended higher than we did and in a better bowl (the INSIGHT Bowl???!!?!?!?!?!) but at the end of the day, it's just college football. And I do love my Sooners...so much so that I won't wear any color even close to burnt orange, which actually looks awesome on me. (Yeah, I'm a chick.)

And yes, I've been drinking a bit this evening. Hope y'all are feeling as good as I am at this moment. :cocksure:

Well anywho thanks for dealing with my vent. I am in no way slamming old people that embrace technology and the like. I was just trying to point out the major difference in the generations as far as media exposure goes. For one I don't use facebook or twitter. They are a waste of time, energy, and frankly many employers are using them to see behind the fluff interviews present.

I do however do have a serious problem with understanding this whole rumor mill bs. It's either true or not. As one father has come on here an said a bunch of fluff and stuff that isn't credible. I am sorry, but I see it as a huge mistake for players to leave regardless of the situation. It is a commitment that one is backing out of. In the Army, that just doesn't fly. At a job it doesn't fly. Why allow backing out now? I get that their are issues, but to think there aren't anywhere you go is plain out laughable. If you don't get playing time at OU it's because you probably need to work harder or if you already work hard it may be time to readjust your realistic goals. Transferring to Alabama St. to get playing time sure isn't a way to get ahead especially if the NFL is in your mindset. Now if you work hard and put in the effort you may be a Sam Bradford, Allen Patrick, or even a Gute. They worked hard to get what they got on varying degrees. Sure 2 didn't really ever pan out to the next level but they got playing time and worked for every snap they got. Effort got them there, and regardless of what excuses they could have used, THEY DIDN'T. That is what teamwork and playing for each other is about.

It's just life and people dude. People disappoint. Life is difficult. It's not easy to accept but people like rumors and gossip, and young guys seeking a better life sometimes make decisions that seem silly to outsiders looking in. Most of the time they are silly decisions (paging marcus, mr. dupree...) but hey, I would like to hot tub time machine back and set a few things right in my life, no doubt. But then I wouldn't be the wise sage I am now. Heh heh.

I think I get it. It isn't something you are supposed to understand...and that is why it is so troublesome. We as fans would give anything to have one play at a college level or if you are lucky in the pros. We root for our team through the ups and downs. That is what makes it troublesome for me. We have tons of recruits coming in this weekend and to me this seems like some sort of sick planned out final revenge if in fact all the crap being spewed is true. That is what is sickening. If it is true (that heads will roll and players will leave), then it defies logic that a player would consciously do this when he knows it will possibly hurt recruiting for the school that gave him a chance. Seems a little fishy to me, but who knows its all rumor right? SMOKE AND FIRE baby isn't that what it's about.

^^..Agreed

To add to that.... The "young gun/ old geezer" controversy has probably been boiling ever since cavemen times. Consider/study history over the last hundred or so years alone.

Every 20 years or so a "new" generation had to cope with it's wars, economic conditions, technology advances, etc. The "old" guys said something like, "well, when I was younger...or...these young people have it made, compared to...." blah blah blah
The "young" guys were saying, "yeah, but you didn't have to deal with the mess you old farts gave us"....blah blah blah

So to me, it seems like it is just part of life and probably is a natural process. I think the trick is just dealing with the issues in front of you as part of adaptation to change and not looking for a fault in either direction. In the words/song of the Eagles, "Get Over It". Move on and work on the true problem(s) or end up like Congress.lol

Try getting on in life without "google" and other computer search engines back when you had to go to a library and spend hours searching through books to find out what a "Nittany" was or who played the Wookie in "Star Wars". Those were hard times, my friend. Plus you could drink at 18---talk about a distraction.

And I hate OSU. We never reach the mountaintop when they are any good. Oklahoma is too small a state for two good teams. If they stay any good we are looking at mediocre teams for both in the forseeable future. Our surivival depends on their destruction.

So is the place you stick the knife when you clean a trout.

Chickens may actually have buttholes, trout certainly do not.
