Since they decided to hire a replica.

Seriously though, Charlie Weis? I don't know about that hire. If it was between him and Gill, I think I stick with Gill.

I actually think that's a good hire for them. And they've already got experience with pre-game meals when Mangino was there, so they have that going for them...

No ****. The opposing coach insult thread will be 10 pages when we play them next year. :)

HEH. But really, has Weis ever left a job and people were sad to see him go? Just saying. If you're gonna have to pay Gill anyway, I don't know that Weis is worth paying Gill to NOT coach. However, as a Sooner, I do appreciate KU football providing me with plenty of humor at their coach's expense the next few years.

My first thought they are replacing a fat man with another fat man and Turner Gill had no chance at successs as he was way too skinny. Restaurants in Lawrence will be happy once again! Then I come on here and see essentially the same thing. :)

With all the success Charlie's pro style offense had at Notre Dame, I'm sure he'll kill with it at Kansas.

Rather than have Charlie Weis take the podium on that stupid press conference thread I hijacked, I'll just have him give an opening statements here:

Weis: I told the guys instead of whining about the coaching change, go look in the mirror and realize you went 5-7 and 6-6. If you want to get rid of me just go 5-7 and 6-6 the next two years and get another coach in here.

We are not the only ones -- From Twitter:

#KU hires its second heavyweight head coach in a decade. But MarkM can coach circles around the fella who couldn't win at #NotreDame.

This hire surprises me - I would almost think that OC at Florida is higher profile than HC at KU right now. Makes me wonder if he got a little nudge from Muschamp that he should look around. I wonder if the respective fanbases are crying or celebrating?

Not just for the funny jibes, but for the "luster", I sorta like the hire. He will get them to a couple of 7 win seasons and leave. ..... Or be fired...

I'm guessing that the owner of the Golden Corral franchise in Lawrence is having an outbreak of cold sweats about now.

OC at Florida to head coach at Kansas is a step backwards.

That's what I think too. If Weis wanted a good HC gig, staying at UF as the OC is a better place than taking the KU job. My guess is he didn't have a choice to stay given how dismal the gator offense was this season.

That's what I'm thinking. May have had 1 more season there tops to make it sizzle and a fired OC wouldn't look nearly as appetizing as an employed one.

He does have a couple of things going for him at Kansas.

One is scheduling. He won't have to face Michigan, Purdue, Stanford, Navy or Southern Cal. Though the Big XII will always be have a couple of teams in Top 10, he still gets Iowa State every year in what is usually a toss-up. There should also be a couple of wins courtesy of the Jayhawks nonconference matchups for 2012, which are South Dakota State, Rice and Northern Illinois. In 2013, they replace NIU with Louisiana Tech.

Secondly, expectations are lower, expecially after the last two seasons. If he has any football smarts at all he should be able to coach them to more wins next year than Gill had total.

Kind of a meh hire, IMO. Good name recognition, but questionable head coaching abilities. It will be interesting to see who he brings in. I've heard Leavitt's name tossed around as a possible DC, which makes me laugh since both he and Mangino were fired for being too mean.

KU hiring Weis kinda reminds me of the Schnelly hire. Duncan was desparate to find a 'name' coach after Mack bailed out, and the next thing we knew, they were introducing The Colonel.

Hope this doesn't end the same way for KU, they can't afford to pay too many ex-football coaches at once.
