The POP discussion reminded me how happy I am that this stuff is out there.

You won't hear it on the radio, and Nashville won't sell it, but it's out there.

Steve Earle has always done it, and he is fairly mainstream.

He even has a son who plays real country.

These are two of my favorites because there aren't enough country songs that make fun of Jesus, or lamenting your ladies' drug use.

Dwight is a very respectable mainstream country musician...rare as a unicorn.

The Stones were always good at balancing blues with honky tonk, the building blocks of rock.

I watched a documentary on the making of Exile on Main St. the other night. Good stuff. Exile is one of my favorites.

Of course, there was no shortage of good country back then. My point was that you have to look pretty hard now.

Of course you're right, but I gave him credit for coming up with a country singer that doesn't need to die.

It's like anything else. Those that started it are hard to match, but I like my music collection to be ever expanding.

If you were to listen to country radio, you would think it's dead. This thread is to prove otherwise.

True, but he was first lumped in with Steve Earle, Lyle Lovett, etc. back in the 80s as a "New Traditionalist". Kind of an interesting discussion here about "Mainstream Country Rebels", an expression which seems oxymoronic at first.

At this point, Outlaw has almost grown to include anything that doesn't suck (churned out by the Nashville bubblegum machine), as opposed to the original 1970's Outlaw movement.

I like my country music sung by rascals...so to speak. They need to have had a storied past, history of drug use, smoking more cigarettes than are available in North Carolina, been broke more than once, can kick some *** and had lost more loves than any of us can imagine. Most of all they need to look like they just walked out of jail or have actually been in jail. There is very little in todays country music that I like and I do not know if there is anyone out there that is truly outlaw other than the original outlaws.

I mean no offense but some of the singers in the videos you posted looked.....well....pussified. Sorry.

This video kind of sums it up from a man who is the very definition of outlaw:

For diverdog: Almost forty years after the fact, it's hard to find guys that look the part anymore. The Avett Bros are pretty soft, Ryan Adams has surely never been in bar brawl. Jason Isbell has a babyface, but as a former member of the Drive-by Truckers, he has tons of outlaw cred.

If it's any consolation, I look like I just got out of prison...

Most importantly, what about the music, Lmao.

There's good reason for that. He is the unanimous poster boy for everything outlaw.
