I went to see a movie you may like but first you have to bury your political leanings. The movie stars Martin Sheen and it is not political. It is about a man who takes a walk on the Camino de Santiago or the way of Saint James. I have been on part of the trail during my last visit to Spain. The movie is good and I thought you would like it because it is Catholic centric. The movie is called The Way. You would also be very interested to know that Martin Sheen is deeply Catholic and he has done this pilgrimage.

Here is the trailer:

Personally I loved the movie and I hope to walk the Camino. It also reasonated with me because I do so much backpacking.

One final thing the movie has been endorsed by Catholic Arch Bishop Timothy Dolan.

Thanks for the info Diver.
I believe that the wiffe mention it to me.

But, sorry Martin Sheen is about as Catholic as Nancy Peeloski!
But also, a good movie is a good movie....especially if it has a moral message.

Cruiser:

What is your basis for saying he is not a good Catholic? He has protested the death penalty, went to El Salvador to protest the killings of priest he is opposed to abortion and I remember reading he was recognized by Notre Dame for his humanitarian work. I think he follows the liberal activist leanings of the church as laid out in Vatican II. Recently I saw an interview where he said the church saved his life after he became an alcoholic. Sheen also talked about his friendship with the Jesuits.

Is he perfect, probably not, but I think he has received grace and is trying to follow in the foot steps of Jesus.

Diver,
Are you Catholic.
Have you been a Catholic from birth, or faithful to the main tennants/teachings of the Church for a lifetime?
Sheen an Peeloski are in conflict with many of the main teachings the Church!
They are typical of the "Cafeteria Catholics" movement since Vatican II.
(Saying they are Catholics; but picking and choosing what they want to believe; or when to follow the "informed" guidance of the Bishops and the Pope.)

I live this, blog this, read lots of literature and on-line reports, and stay active in "orthodox" Catholic issues.
We watch a lot of Catholic TV, especially EWTN - the Global Catholic Television Network.

Anti-death penalty and overwhelming importance of social justice issues are the outgrowth of the socialist misunderstanding, or overt misrepresentation of Vatican !! Both Peeloski and Sheen are blatently and openly Pro-Death, pro-abortion! The Bishops and the Pope have even recently re-emphasized the primacy of life issues, such as abortion. But, have left the door open on the death penalty.
Some bishops have recently been courageous in their dealings with high visibility Catholics. OThers, like Archbishop Mahoney in California, were left leaning and them them get away with murder. Any wonder that that type of diocese had higher offender rates in the priest pedophilia scandals.

The recent Popes have made special efforts to point out the misrinterpretations and over-reaching from Vatican II; and specifically have opened the process of "correcting" the false teachings of once faithful institutions, like Notre Dame! If you were involved in watching this, you would know that Notre Dame and many other so-called "Catholic" institutions are even in danger of losing their "Catholic" affiliations. Many of the exectives and board members of these schools are left-leaning non-Catholics, and have been involved deeply in mis-managing funds from the CCHD donations into anti-Catholic activities, including support abortions and ACORN.

Maybe I am not seeking the plank in my own eye. But, the term "Catholic" has come to mean a lot less.
As much as I like Newt's ideas.....I cannot see how now he is white as the driven snow with his marriage history....and can be a good Catholic now. The marriage tribunals, much like Notre Dame, can be pressured by important people with lots of $$$$. THere is till a long way to go back to a strong Catholic Church in America.

If you have the time, look up the Kennedy's and Rockafeller's connection/interventions into Notre Dame, which resulted in ND coming out in opposition to Church teachings on artificial contraception 50 years ago. The was the small spark for the fire that has led to a growing secular American Catholic Church, mis-representation of what Vatican II said, acceptance of contraception, abortion, and the weakening of the education of the seminaries in the Catholic Church in the 60s-80s. And, we know what that has done to the church and many young men.

BTW - any Catholic noticing the back pedaling on the liturgy back towards pre-Vatican II?
Wonder why?

Very good cruiser. As an episcopalian I appreciate the Catholics rules. Of course I am an episcopalian because we have no rules.

Episcopal Church! Only church that I have visited that I felt "comfortable" in.
It probably was the "no rules", just right thing!
My college roommate was a drunk and Episcopal.
I was a drunk for a year or so, and Catholic.
We made a special chugging team!

Oh, our former lives!
I decided that since I wasn't Irish, I couldn't make anything of myself by just drinking.

Yes I was raised in a very strict Catholic home and attended Catholic school. My great grandmother and a priest started Saint Anns home in Oklahoma City.

I am not sure why you are bringing Newt and Pelosi into the conversation because I never mentioned them. To say Sheen is pro death is not accurate and recently the church has sided with lots of social justice issue surrounding the poor....they always have done this under the banner of human dignity.

We are all cafeteria Catholics in one way or another.

And Cruiser the church will never ever take away Notre Dames status as a Catholic school. As an institution they may carry more weight in this country than the pope.

And this, ladies and gentlemen, tells you something about the nature of the modern "American Catholic Church".

Martin Sheen played a freaking outstanding Robert E. Lee, and that makes him a pretty awesome dude in my book.

Cruiser remember God comes before the church. The church has a clouded history and has lost its way with Christ teachings in many areas. I think to often Orthodox Catholics get caught up in the romance of the church and forget we are here to serve god and not the pope.

Yes he did. I hiked Gettysburg and Sharpsburg with our scouts this past year. Really wonderful experience.

Diverdog remember God comes before the individual. Individuals have a clouded history and has lost its way with Christ teachings in many areas. I think too often cafeteria catholics get caught up in themselves and forget we are here to serve god and not ourselves.

I disagree with Cruiser that Martin Sheen is akin to Pelosi. I haven't seen him misrepresent anything or dog other trying Catholics. Overall pretty humble, sincere and earnest in the approach. He may be imperfect but he doesn't try to pretend that he's otherwise. In other words, pretty much what I'd try to do.

On the other hand, to broadly paint orthodox Catholics with a pope-before-God worshipping brush sounds like the local pentecostal preacher.

I hope to walk the Camino someday too. I'll probably be old and gray before I have the time.

You are right I did paint with a broad brush and that was not fair. Most people find their grace with god in their own way.

It is also not fair to judge Sheen since he is not here to defend himself. His movie in many ways was more spiritual to me than Gibsons movie which was a two hour blood fest. What moved me about Sheens movie was not the movie per se but the thought of making a pilgrimage and learning about one self and our own relationship with god. To that end I am going to figure out a way to walk one of the great routes....most likely the Camino since I love the Basque country.

The other thing that I liked about the movie was the backpacking. I spend about one weekend a month backpacking and already have many trips planned next year. Being out in the wild is always spiritual for me and my two hiking buddies do not have a problem with a mini church service if we are out in the field on Sunday. I am not a great church goer but I love being in the wild and giving thanks for all that I have on this earth.

Diver,
I some really good solid Catholic friends who have even been Jesuit educated.

But, that in of itself, like Sheen's "friends with" reference, is meaningless.
The Jesuits have had a very problematic history in the Catholic Church.

Lately, many Jesuit Education Institutions have been very liberal in teaching and action.

Feast of the
Immaculate Conception

Dear friend in Christ, I pray your Advent is going well! Here at The Cardinal Newman Society we're preparing ourselves for Christmas and intensifying our work to win new ground for the renewal of Catholic universities (as always, at the service of Catholic families).

As you'll read in this newsletter, our bombshell report on the homosexual conferences at two Jesuit universities has the schools cornered in their ridiculous defenses! Our investigations this year have already spurred on real change for the better, and with the prayers of our members we'll create a real turning point in the renewal of Catholic higher education.

That's why I need your help spreading the word about our Advent and Christmas Campaign for Catholic Renewal. I am counting on you to forward this email to your friends [ FORWARD ]. And would you please double-up your prayers for us and consider making a special contribution to our campaign? May God bless you in this grace-filled season!

In Christ,
Patrick J. Reilly, President

Fordham, Fairfield Respond to CNS Report on Homosexual Conferences
Given widespread media and blog coverage of our special report on homosexual conferences co-sponsored by Fordham and Fairfield Universities, the universities offered a response. We might have expected an excuse, perhaps even an apology. Instead they issued weak defenses of the morally disturbing events on their campuses. You need to read this. Also, make sure you see our press release and full report.

Diver,
Make it to Mass today?

No. I had to go to viewing tonight. One of my dearest friends died of A heart attack.

He was a real stud. Served in Khe Sahn during the siege. He really helped me in the AF and got me into the SOLl II special op crews. The funeral will be a mass in the morning.
