Mark Packed asked, "with the crazy money coaches are paid today, could you be lured back into coaching?"

The King, "for that money, I'd take a job, and then work on getting my @ss fired as quickly as possible. I got paid $24,000 a year for back to back championships. Turner Gill won 5 games in two years, and earned 2 million a win. Sign me up."

It's true also. Who wouldn't? Go and tank a school's program for big bucks?

What King was referring to is this convenient little fact: KU will continue to pay him $2 mil per year for the next three years to not coach. That's like getting $2 million per zero wins.

SIGN ME UP! I promise not to finger poke players, use the word "homies" or make players bear crawl on the practice field that big meanie Mangino! :P

I see this advantageous to OU!

"Switzer returns to coaching... AT TEXAS!"
5 million per year with 8 million buyout.

He ought to be able to win 5-7 games that way. 

Most of today's coaches would **** their britches if they had to play a Barry coached team. Just the sheer awesomeness of his presence on the sideline would cause them to fall to their knees in slack-jawed bewilderment.

Well, I'd **** myself too if my opponent had a team twice the size of mine. :D

That said, Barry had the dominant and confident look of Saban and Stoops along with the quirkiness of Mike Leach. NTM, I don't know of an active coach whose players would jump in front of a bullet for their coach like many of Switzer's guys would have.

With the Sandusky allegations, this takes on a whole new meaning.

How ****ty do you have to be in order for someone to pay you 2 mil a year to NOT do something?

Who knows? Surely he had some bonuses or the like. He's likely talking about the seventies. I would think by the eighties he was banking.

I do remember it being controversial when Switzer's pay hit $100k sometime in the 70s. He may have been exagerating a bit with the 24k - probably had some bonuses. But it was certainly very different than today even accounting for the CPI.

That was 74-75, before his tv show, so his pay could have very well been 24K.

I'd like to imagine that Barry told the admin that he'd take $24K but, if his team ran the table, he'd expect $1,000,000 bonus and then enjoyed their discomfort as November rolled around.

The one thing with Barry was that he was never out of a game. Hell, even if OU was down by four scores with 2 minutes on the clock, the other coach would be sweating bullets wondering exactly how Switzer was going to beat himi.

I think Leach hardballed Tech a little like that, which is why they were so eager to get rid of him at the first opportunity and he's now suing them. He was reportedly trying to negotiate a salary comparable to Mack or Bob after the season they tied with us and Texas for the Big 12 South. He was also reportedly offering via his agent to interview for top head coaching jobs on his own dime, just to make Tech sweat a little bit more.

Leach really is a lawyer and a genius. I have a feeling Wazzu will treat him better than Tech did though.

74-75 were Barry's second and third years as Head Coach. I have no idea if the $24k figure was correct but I do know that in that same time frame there were VERY few doctors making more than $100k. A new off the show room floor '73 BMW 2002 was $2,300.

Heh, back in '07 I started a one-man campaign to get Barry Switzer hired at Baylor after we fired GuyMo. I was way ahead of the curve on this one:
