Transferring :(

It sounds like it was family-related, not program-related. Wish him the best :(

That sucks! Blair will have to step in and start shooting better and not turnover the ball.

Blech. But that must be really tough to be that far away and lose both his mother and grandmother so close together. I wish him the best.

Huge blow to the team this year; it's an expectation changer for sure.

btw, to everyone (myself included) that was wishing him best on his future endeavors, our friends at OUHoops.com are now saying that he's transferring to somewhere not exactly closer to home... Central Florida.

 It looks like we were had, guys.

Why lie about something like that? I would rather he just said he didn't want to be here to begin with.

Myeh. It would've been more ideal for us if he had done this after the season, but it frees up a scholarship, and I'm sure we can do better. Not to hate on Newell too much, but I don't know that he would have put up very big numbers against better competition.

Not 100% sure on the specifics of the transfer process, but maybe he had a place in mind close to home that reneged on their offer so he went to UCF? Don't know if you can really ask for a transfer then say "whoops, didn't work out, I'm back guys". But at this point I agree with the logic that scholarships are worth their weight in gold to the OU men and any extras we come up with are a plus.

There are plenty of basketball schools in the Philly area, surely one of them would have taken him if that was the real reason. I call "dillweed" on him.

He broadened his search once he decided to leave the Sooners, picking UCF over Wake Forest, Maryland and UCLA. He canceled all his remaining visits after his stop in Orlando. Newell is slated to enroll in January and will be eligible to play after final exams in December 2012.

That doesn't sound like he was looking to stay close to Philly.

Weak.
