With Ronnell Lewis sidelined by a sprained knee, sophomore linebacker Corey Nelson moved to defensive end last week. Nelson is a good fit at linebacker but Ronnell Lewis was a former linebacker as was former star Jeremy Beal.

“Guys that can make that switch are instinctive,” said defensive coordinator Brent Venables. “(Nelson) isn't a guy who needs a lot of reps anywhere. Sometimes you have those kind of guys.

“He happens to be one of those guys that have the ability to play multiple positions mentally and physically. He's a full-time D-End until we get the Hammer back.”

A 6-1 219# DE? Coaches know best...

he played in Ronnell's spot at DE last week against Iowa State. When the D switched to the nickle package, McFarland and Nelson came out and King and Harris went in.

How did he do?

He's not Ronnell, but he did alright considering he's undersized.

Besides, when I went to OU, there was a 5'9" 215 lb DT on the three deep. Guy was strong as hell though.

But that was back when people wore leather helmets and still listened to music that isn't generated by computer.

Yeah, yeah. I met George Cumby when I was going to school. He was a little dude. Surprised me how little he was. Nelson's fast, quick and a fairly good tackler, when he doesn't get sucked in on a play fake. He did okay and I think he'll be fine.

Stoops said today that Nelson played some of the DE position last weekend, so wouldn't be his first attempt. Remember, when we run a 3 man front, the DE position is really just an outside linebacker.

Smart move imo, because its like he plays it anyway. He's usually the one blitzing when he's at LB. He should be able to get around the edges faster. Weeden better be ready.

Yep, he did a great job of it last week. Is there a position Nelson can't play?

Trevor, you remember when Rickey Brady hyperextended your elbow and ruined your football career? Those were good times.

Nelson at DE... good move IMO. He's fast and tackles hard.

I'm all for keeping constant pressure on Weeden. He needs to be passing the ball in 2 seconds or less. Tight coverage will keep stuff shallow. Make him beat us short, not deep.
