View Full Version : Bell has 6 of the last 7 OU TDs that is NOT a good thing

We all love what Bell has done for us at the goaline, but we have to have TDs from other people. Were not getting big TD plays everything is coming from the goaline. By the way the ohter Td was a 5 yard run from Milliard. We have been without passing TD both last week, and this week.

I've been pretty confused by our lack of big, touchdown scoring, plays (both run and pass) too, but I'll take that statistic over "OU is 0 for 6 on their last 6 redzone drives".

That's only when we're in the redzone. I actually like us having to play in the redzone as opposed to just getting longer TDs all the time. I think it'll help the team in the long run. The last long TDs we've had were against Tech.

scoring TDs is a bad thing now? I don't care if Jimmy Stevens is scoring TDs, as long as we score.

He has 6 of the last 7 TDs cus we are getting down inside the 5. Do you want us to have to rely on 50 yd TDs every game? Geez

We don't have Whaley, Reynolds, and Broyles. I don't think it should surprise anyone that we're not getting the long TDs. I'm just happy we're still finding ways to score.

If you guys cann't see the problem of not having a TD pass for 2 straight games then your are naive or blind.

Hi, I'm Chuck Naive. Yes, I'm blind.

Far as I'm concerned, we're not scoring at the pace we need to be anyway. We should be able to hang 80 regardless of circumstances.

I think what started as a solution to isolated red zone problems has morphed into an integral part of our offensive strategy. A good part too. Yes it would be more aesthetically pleasing not to see wholesale substitutions to overpower the defense but it's a trade-off I'll take. Has anybody else noticed that since the inception of the the"Belldozer" our offensive line has started run blocking better in other situations also? I see this as a work in progress. Give Josh some kudos for going in a different direction to get some results.

I'd like to think Landry Jones has been at least a bit embarrassed for being yanked out of the red zone. Touch downs are great, but I see what he's saying. It's not so good if it seems our only scoring capability comes from either Bell or field goals. Some of the others, including LJ, needs to step it up even more.

Tulsa_Fireman
11/26/2011, 04:21 PM
Maybe no TDs from Jones today had more to do with horrible ball placement and a bunch of wideouts with skillet hands than some burgeoning trend caused by the coaching staff establishing at least a semblance of a short yardage set.

Zero TD's in 2 weeks is a VERY bad thing. If we had scored these TD's with our running backs instead of with the "Belldozer" the boards would be full of threads discussing the offensive problems we're having. Jones is in a bit of a bad spot because he's without his starting RB, his #1 receiver, and his #3 receiver. I don't think anyone is saying that LJ is off his game, rather the offense is having issues scoring through the air because of all the injuries, etc. I mean, we beat Iowa State at home and only scored 26 points. 26 points is fine if you have a defense that can muscle up against an opponent (and they did a better job today) but 26 points isn't going to beat OSU next week, and it likely won't beat whomever we play in a bowl game. We really need some of our young receivers to step up and start performing or it could get real ugly real quick next week. How about this question, how many people think we'll beat OSU if we have 0 passing TD's next week? And before you start thinking we'll score against OSU's crappy defense, remember that Baylor is one of the worst defenses IN THE ENTIRE FBS and we couldn't get a passing TD against them either.

*facepalm*

That was the whole point of the package to fix our red zone issues. Another way to think about is how many of those would we have converted to TDs had we kept our regular offense on the field?

SoonerorLater
11/26/2011, 07:54 PM
You're probably right. Blake Bell is just scoring too darn many touchdowns. How can we correct this?

jkjsooner
11/26/2011, 08:04 PM
Didn't Florida win a national title with a young guy running similar plays in the redzone a few years ago? As for Jones being embarrassed about it, I'd ask if Chris Leak was also embarrassed. Our problems in the red zone have everything to do with the run game and it's not Jones's fault for that. Any QB would have trouble scoring from within the five if the running game is not at all effective.

The formation is already pretty hard to stop but once it becomes less predictable it will become harder to stop. Right now it's clear that Bell is much more confident keeping the ball than handing off on the zone read or passing. In the future (probably not this year) we'll force the defenses to play the pass and option reads.

As for not having big play TD's, we have too many skill players with injuries. Maybe it's concerning but not unexpected.

I couldn't be happier. OU diced them for over 250 yards on the ground, kept their defense off the field for good stretches and generally owned a team that bloodied OSU's nose last week.

It's a legit point and I don't see why everyone is so hostile about it. It's great we have an effective redzone scheme, but we need big plays too to be really effective. But just looking at who is missing from the offense answers the question of why it isn't happening right now. Man, I just hope we have Jaz Reynolds back next week. We did see today that just the Belldozer formation is not enough. ISU was prepared and stuff the play several times. It wasn't enough to stop it, but it showed that it's not a given on 4th down if the opposition is prepared. I'm glad it happened at times (stuffing Bell), because it helps us going into next week.

The Sooners have had 28 passing tds this year...

Broyles (out) had 10
Reynolds (out) has 5

Total passing yards of 4131
Broyles (out) had 1157 yards
Jaz (out) has 692

It is not easy to replace 50% of your receiving offense with no drop in performance....
