Saw earlier today where Bob has now overtaken BUD and BARRY with the most half a hundred games.
Here's the other half of the story (no pun intended):
Games where OU gives up more than 20 (W-L):
BARRY - 45 (24-21)
BOB - 72 (45-27)
Games where OU gives up more than 30 (W-L)
BARRY - 9 (1-8)
BOB - 31 (18-31)
Games where OU gives up more than 40 (W-L)
BARRY - 3 (1-2)
BOB - 10 (2-8)
Games where OU gives up more than 50
BARRY - NEVER
BOB - 1 (0-1)
Does it mean anything? I'm not smart enough to say. However, I do know somethings to be true:
1) The best defense is a great offense that keeps the other team's O off the field.
2) Modern offenses stretch defenses more than they did back in the day. That said, in each of two national championship games, prolific OU offenses only managed 14 points. Therefore, you can surmize that a nasty defense is more desirable than a prolific offense.
3) Since 2003, OU has had one top 10 defense. The average at the end of the season has been 31, but there has been a 39, 68, and 53. The trend is not good.
4) Every time a mic is in front of Coach Stoops, reporters need to be asking what he plans to do to improve the OU defense. Every time.
