View Full Version : Occupy OKCity Update - Where Tents ARE Allowed

Outside of a little initial interest, there hasn't been all that much in the OKCity print news about Occupy OKCity.

Here is an article link or two on Occupy OKC.
There are about a dozen hard-core protesters that stay overnight. And, some others join them later in the day, like the protest in front of City Hall.

The first article talks about the peaceful relationship the protesters have struck-up with the police and city officials - allowing them to stay overnight in tents, that would normally even be against city ordanance.

I think they should be allowed in the left lane of I-240, from 6am through 5:59am

You can see my tent in the second link, the one that the homeless person died in. I also lost my air mattress pump there and I saw two people using it in those pics. I camped there for the first two weeks till we decided that the people there were not worth associating ourselves with.

That's a pity. I want to join the occupy movement. I have money and free time but no real idea of where I want to occupy.

Mainly because they have been respectful and made agreements with the police and city...
To be peaceful; to clean up after themselves; etc.

How can you say that, bonkuba? I don't know you and I can't say what you contribute to society. I can speak for myself, though. I have worked for several Wall Street brokers and I have seen some pretty ugly stuff. I defend my right to support free speech and the ability to stand up for what I believe is right. If you think I am not about contributing to society, then it is your calll.

Ok, so I had to be downtown this afternoon, and decided to drive by.
Yes, there were about a dozen tents. But, little sign of life, or activity.
About 3 or 4 folks sitting at a pincic table talking.
Huh!

("Quiet". Just like we like it!)
Or, they were in the kitchen cooking Thanksgiving dinner. :distrust:

The Del City Police actually arrested about a dozen of the OKC Occupiers on Black Friday at a Walmart in Del City.
They had already been at several other large stores before the Walmart; and had disrupted business as usual with chanting up front & through the isles.

As I mentioned, hardly anyone was at the encampment mid week. So, these folks must be disgruntled weekend warriors of another type.
i.e.....unwilling to give up their daytime jobs to protest.

I heard that the Occupy OKC space had become a transient town after dark and that there had been a fight recently with one pregnant woman hospitalized afterward. Plus, nearby construction made the park unsafe for a protest.

So, not necessarily an anti-Occupy decision, but more of a public health and safety situation.

The "Occupy" movement is starting to be held more accountable, even in the most liberal places. Police didn't arrest people in Occupy LA, they just served them an eviction notice, with their pro-labor mayor basically telling them to DO SOMETHING, don't just camp in a park. You got people's attention, now go and DO SOMETHING with that attention other than continue to occupy park space.

I stand corected.

The correct quote from Monday's Oklahoman should have been that the "Occupy" permit to be in Kerr Park had expired.
Today's Oklahoman states that although their permit expired, there are regular patrols continuing to key an eye on them.
But, police have no current plan to put them in the dumpster.

I saw a guy on the news tonight with the Occupiers. He looked like a gay Brian Setzer from his Stray Cats days. He ended his comments with "look out Mayor Cornett, we're comin' for ya'".

I imagine Mick is getting the business for that this morning.

Yeah. I liked the designated protest zones some cities have come up with. Fence off a parking lot at an abandoned downtown warehouse, and let them sit and stare at each other.

Yeah. I heard that homeless people really took to this occupy movement across the country, because it was seen as a more secure place to set up and camp for the night than some of the places they would frequent usually. I think someone was quoted as saying that they can leave their stuff there and it would be there in the morning.

While some occupy groups embraced their forgotten city's citizens, others I think didn't realize what exactly they got themselves into, like Occupy OKC, which had leaders who helped get the dealio with the city approved leave the group after disagreements.

So, the injunction holding back the police was lifted by the judge yesterday.
So, what are the police doing? Is the mayor talking???

Does this smell somewhat similar to the fed's inaction on the border and illegal immigration?
What the he11 is the matter with our law enforcement at all levels these days?
Everybody is too dang scared to take action these days.

First ammendment rights are great!
But, no one has the right to squat on public property where there is a law against camping.

Living in my home is just too dang expensive!
I think that I will set up a tent community inside the Chesapeake Center. After all, we as the taxpayers own it, don't we?

Has anyone here seen their local occupy movement?

The last I heard was them trying to troll the Democrats in Iowa (and got arrested) and slipping into the end of the Rose Parade (they had tons of police following them, but no arrests to my knowledge).

Tulsa's Occupy group hasn't been seen or heard since before Christmas.

I saw my first Occupy group last week when I was in Pensacola. (I live in the deep woods) It mostly seemed to consist of a dozen or so grubby looking young people kinda milling about and yelling stuff, and one older guy holding a Ron Paul sign. I've seen more impressive groups protesting the killing of turkeys at Thanksgiving time.
