I think it may be B. Stoops.

What coach has been to the national championship game, as a coach, the most times?

the correct answer is going to be Urban Meyer regardless of whether or not it's correct.

oh, and switzer won three, though one of them he didn't have to play for I don't guess and he lost one or two. hard to say really.

No doubt it's Stoops.

Stoops 4
Tress 3
Bowden 3
Mayer 2
Big Ears 2
Mackie 2
Petey 2
Saban 2

Looks like 6 others at one...Solich, Kelly, Chizik, Beamer, Fulmer, and Lester

Did he ever play in a National Championship game? They didn't exist until 1998 season.

I understand, the thread only refers to BCS National Championship games. Strictly speaking, the bowl games he coached in the years Bama finished #1 would be considered the equivalent of a NC game, since had the tide lost those games they would not have been voted #1 in the AP and/or UPI polls.

Not in all of them. Bama won the AP poll under Bryant 5 times ('61,'64,'65,'78, & '79), & in 2 of those seasons ('61 & '64), the AP released their poll before the bowls (& FWIW, Bama lost to the 'horns in the Orange Bowl to conclude the '64 season. This is where Arkansas fans lay claim to their one & only NC, even though they did not win either poll).

As for the coaches poll, Bama won that one in '61, 64, '73, & '79. They however, did not start releasing their final poll after bowls until the 1974 season.

Didn't Tom Osborne coach 4 national title games in the 90's? won the last 3 and lost the 1st 1. ... Dang sounds like the exact opposite of Stoops.

That first one was also his 7th straight bowl loss. Doesn't take much for the worm to turn sometimes....

Hopefully Stoops national title worm turns with a little luck this year.
