Wonder if they even considered Leach.

Why? There HAS to be some assistant somewhere that is better than Davies. This smacks of a lazy AD that just wants a name to bring in a few extra tickets and more TV revenue.

Somehow by hiring Davie I don't think they will be selling any extra tickets and I don't see any sports shows on tv putting New Mexico on television. It was a hire of convenience and name recognition and maybe they will be able to get higher rated players from high school and JC, but probably not.

So let me get this straight. A program that has constantly been heading for mediocrity or worse, stays the course.
Got ya! Thanks.

It's a basketball school, football is an after thought at the very best. Hell their mens soccer team gets about the same attendance as football.

Since when are they good in basketball? Tiddlywinks school more like.

Let me rephrase, their fan base supports their basketball program much more than football and always has.

I still haven't forgiven that stupid SOB for chattering on and on about ND football whilst calling the OU-TU game a few years back.

Leach was the "peoples' choice" out here, but I think he was holding out for a bigger payday. UNM has major money problems, in part due to years of neglect of the football program. And they were bowl eligible for seven straight seasons, which for here is good. But they still have lazy louts who would rather rake their leaves in the fall on Saturdays so they can veg out on Sundays with the NFL.

Lobos had a chance to hire Davie last time. He said he would coach on a one year contract for $700K. If they wanted him to stay a second year, $900K. If they wanted him to stay a 3rd year, $1 mill.

They hired Locksley and got the worst record in college football plus 3 lawsuits. HEH!

Hiring an average at best coach who's been out of football for a decade? Any problems figuring out why that program is a mess?

Kinda surprised here. The Lobos had a chance to really upgrade big. I guess the money just wasn't there for it. I personally don't think Davies is a bad coach. They will definitely win more games and be a pretty clean/non-controversial program. But this move doesn't exactly inspire 10 win seasons and non-AQ BCS berths.

Given the end result, it makes you wonder who else even bothered to apply for this one.
