By a nearly 2-1 margin, voters repealed a law that would have curtailed the bargaining rights of more than 350,000 teachers, firefighters, police officers and other state employees. The law signed in late March by Republican Gov. John Kasich would have banned public employee strikes, scrapped binding arbitration, and denied public workers the ability to negotiate pensions and health benefits.

A similar Wisconsin law exempts most police and firefighters. It limits most other public workers, including teachers, to negotiating only over salary increases no greater than inflation. It also forced workers to pay more for their health care and insurance benefits.

I love my birth state, but the rust belt is getting old and rusty and that's why people are moving south where there is sunshine and jobs. I remember teachers talking about retiring to Arizona back north when I was in their classes... and they did. Lower property taxes AND less snow? Score!

I heard that one of the major reasons the Ohio repeal vote happened was because of massive union spending on advertisements as well as campaigning by local police and fire. If THE Ohio state had just exempted the public employees most people love and see daily in the communities, it probably would have not been repealed.

Not surprising just don't ask us to bail them out when their state is bankrupt...

That bankrupt state deserves all the misery they get. Like Cali running Brown out of office, then re electing him.

It seems popular in some circles to bash unions, and the historical record is full of examples of abuse by union leadership. However, the historical record is also full of examples where employees were treated unfairly and organization was the only way out. From the railroads to the mines. Remember the Ludlow Massacre? Cowboys, perhaps our greatest and most revered American icon, were amongst the first workers to organize in this country. We wouldn't have the PCRA and pro-rodeo without organizing. Read the history of the "Cowboy Turtles Association" back in 1936. The precursor to the PCRA.
So, I'd be careful to not always be "anti-union." Unions have done a lot of good and are still needed. What they need more than anything is solid, honest leadership, just like any organization.

What's the problem with how Ohio voted? The Republicans had their agenda and crammed it down the throats of the people, and the people responded. Democracy at its finest and working as it was designed to do. What's the issue?

Some people don't look at it that way unfortunately. Just like there are many idiotic people who believe that we should abolish OSHA, when in fact since OSHA was created back in 1970, the annual fatality rate dropped. In 1960, there was about an annual average of 14,000-15,000 job related fatalities per years, and back in FY 09, there was about 4300.

Unions are nothing but a group of similarly situated individuals banding together to enhance their bargaining power in the free market economy. Without unions, employers would pretty much be able to dictate terms and conditions of employment. There would be no real back and forth negotiations. Especially for lower-skilled workers.

Unions are nothing but a group of similarly situated individuals banding together to enhance their bargaining power in the free market economy. Without unions, employers would pretty much be able to dictate terms and conditions of employment. There would be no real back and forth negotiations. Especially for lower-skilled workers.

At one time in this country, there were few workplace safety laws, few restraints on employers, and incredibly exploitive working conditions that ranged from slavery, to share cropping, to putting children in dangerous working conditions. Unions, to their everlasting credit, helped play an important role in leveling the playing field for workers.

However, as the laws changed, there was less and less need for unions. Because of that, union membership shrank. In response, the unions became more explicitly involved in politics. Over time, they managed to co-opt the Democratic Party, pull their strings, and rewrite our labor laws in their favor.

As Lord Acton noted, "Power tends to corrupt," and that has certainly been true for the unions. Unions have become selfish, extremely greedy, and even thuggish in their never-ending quest to take in as much as they can for themselves, at the expense of everyone else who crosses their path.

That's why today, unions have changed from organizations that "look out for the little guy" into the largest, most rapacious special interest group in the entire country. Where unions go, disaster usually follows. Just to name a few examples:

1) Unions are severely damaging whole industries: How is it that GM and Chrysler got into such lousy shape that they had to be bailed out? There's a simple answer: The unions. The massive pensions the car companies paid out raised their costs so much that they were limited to building more expensive cars to try to get their money back. They couldn't even do a great job of building those cars because utterly ridiculous union rules prevented them from using their labor efficiently. America created the automobile industry, but American unions are strangling it to death. Unions also wrecked the steel and textile industries and have helped drive manufacturing jobs overseas. They're crippling the airline industry and, of course, we can't forget that...

2) Unions are ruining public education: Every few years, it's the same old story. The teachers’ unions claim that public education in this country is dramatically underfunded and if they just had more money, they could turn it around. Taxpayer money then pours into our schools like a waterfall and....there's no improvement. A few years later, when people have forgotten the last spending spree on education, the process is repeated.

However, the real problem with our education system in this country is the teachers’ unions. They do everything possible to prevent schools not only from firing lousy teachers, but also from rewarding talented teachers. Merit pay? The unions hate it. Private schools? Even though everyone knows they deliver a better education than our public schools, unions fight to keep as many kids as possible locked in failing public schools. In Wisconsin, we've had whole schools shutting down so that lazy teachers can waste their time protesting on the taxpayers’ dime. Want to improve education in this country? Then you've got to take on the teachers’ unions.

3) Unions are costing you billions of tax dollars: Let's put it plain and simple: Government workers shouldn't be allowed to unionize. Period.

Why?

Because you elect representatives to look out for your interests.

It's obviously in your interest to pay as little as possible to government workers, to keep their benefits as low as possible, and to hire as few of them as possible to do the job. However, because the Democratic Party and the unions are in bed with each other, this entire process has been turned on its ear. Instead of looking out for your interests, Democrats try to hire as many government workers as possible, pay them as much as possible, and give them benefits that are as generous as possible, all so that union workers will do more to get them re-elected.

In other words, the Democratic Party and the unions are engaged in an open conspiracy to defraud the American taxpayer. There's no way that the American people should allow that to continue.

4) Unions are fundamentally anti-democratic : How in the world did we get to the point where people can be forced to join a union just to get a job at certain places? Then, after they're dragooned into the union, they have no choice other than to pay dues that are used for political activities which the unwilling dues-paying member may oppose.

Add to that the fact that the Democrats and the government unions collaborate to subvert democracy at the expense of the taxpayer and it's not a pretty picture. Worse yet, unions have gotten so voracious that they even want to do away with the secret ballot, via card check, so they can openly bully people into joining unions. The way unions behave in this country is undemocratic, un-American, and it should trouble anyone who cares about freedom and individual rights.

5) Government unions are bankrupting cities and states: Government unions have bled billions from taxpayers nationally, but the damage they're doing on the local level is even worse. We have cities and states all across the country that are so behind on their bills that there have been genuine discussions about bankruptcy. There are a lot of irresponsible financial policies that have helped contribute to that sorry state-of-affairs, but unquestionably, the biggest backbreakers can be directly traced back to the unions.

As the Washington Times has noted, union pensions are crushing budgets all across the country.

Yet it comes as little surprise that the same profligacy that pervades the corridors of federal power infects this country’s 87,000 state, county and municipal governments and school districts. By 2013, the amount of retirement money promised to employees of these public entities will exceed cash on hand by more than a trillion dollars.

So, what happens when these pensions can't be paid? They will come to the taxpayers with their hands out. When they stroll forward with their beggar's bowl in hand, the American people should keep their wallets in their pockets. That may not seem fair, but the public sector union members have gotten a great deal at everyone else's expense for a long time and if somebody has to take a haircut, and they do, it should be the union members instead of the taxpayers they've been bilking for so long.

Well by your standard anything you've read in a book and repeated as learned knowledge is "plagiarized". You did nothing to gain the knowledge on your own, you let someone else do the work, you read it, then recited it as fact. I read the article, found it very enlightening and decided to share it with the board.

The same way you did when you quoted a case precedent in another thread on this site. Rather than just post the link, I chose to cut and past the article. Funny your choice of words "steeling". By your standard anything you read on the internet, then relay to others is "steeling". You're an an idiot.

Let me ask you, what do you think about what the SEIU is doing in Michigan? If you're a parent of an adult child with a disability and you care for that child in your home, if you're receiving medicaid for that child, guess what???? You're automatically enrolled in the SEIU as a care giver, and as such, 30.00 a month of the money you should be receiving to help with the care of your child, is paid to the SEIU as a union dues.

The SEIU collects close to 6 million a year in dues, through this practice. Now, tell is all again how the unions were set up to protect the labor force. Oh and remember, you're not allowed to google anything on this subject, that would be "steeling".

You may be many things, but a skilled author you ain't. Also, even in books (do you read them?) you have to cite to your sources or you are going to get sued.

Posting an article is one thing. Trying to pass it off as your own thoughts is quite another. Surely you don't think anyone buys your explanation? You stole because you thought you wouldn't get caught.

As to the SEIU information, the only thing I can find on Google is from right wing blogs. There's no way to determine whether that's even true or whether it's the full explanation about what's actually going on. Seeing as political propaganda blogs (on both sides) rely on half-truths to get their message across, I'll reserve judgment.

Assuming everything you said is true, yes, in that one case, what the SEIU is doing is a crock. That doesn't, however, automatically cast a shadow on all unions or even the rest of the SEIU.

And that whole bit about me citing a case as compared to you cutting and pasting someone else's opinion piece and claiming it as your own....

Hey midtown, let me ask you, how many pounds are in a ton?

Don't answer him, it's a trick question! Know why? Because if you put pounds in a ton, it's no longer a ton, but weights pounds more than a ton!

:D I play a lot of logic games and some of the puzzle answers are as facepalm worthy as that. It's like they have several correct answers and are just dying to tell you that you are wrong for a silly reason.

Possibly because there wasn't one. "The majority of the citizens" has nothing to do with the Citizens United decision. The only fair reading of what you wrote was that you thought "Citizens United" was a reference to people acting in concert.

However, to answer your non sequitur, if corporations or unions want to run ads advocating the defeat of pro-healthcare congressmen, that's their right, sure. If you wanted to know whether I thought the healthcare bill should be repealed by majority vote, then no. The Constitution does not provide for the repeal of federal legislation in that manner.

I figured it was a trick question, and usually like that stuff, but still don't get this one.

Sorry Mr. "I play a lot of logic games" that is not where I was going with that question. If he cares to answer it, you'll find out the point I was going to make.

I was simply going to use his logic to show how idiotic one of his comments were in an earlier post.
While I think the guy is a total knob, I will assume he knows how many pounds make up a ton. He doesn't have the nut sack to answer the question. That tells me he fears my logic and knows he will not be able to defeat it.

The context of this thread was the recent vote in Ohio, you then stated "citizens united" is a bitch. I took that to mean you were being sarcastic, because the citizens of Ohio had voted not to limit collective bargaining. So yes there was some ambiguity in your comment.

Dad, GOD rest his soul, was a coal miner and union member in PA & WV.
His story was the one where he kept working too hard and was warned about it by a Union official.
The same guys attempt to kill my Dad failed. But, the union posted 4 jobs to replace him.

Dad said, even before this incident, that unions will some day run the country!
GOD forbid!
:hopelessness:

Unions run Ohio, NY, PA, Mich, etc.

Shizzle. OK, here's MRS. "I play a lot of logic games" second answer:

It is impossible to answer because the term "ton" can refer to a metric system ton or an English system ton. Simply asking for "pounds" does not clarify which ton, either the one referred to as "long ton" or the one referred to as "short ton" because units of measure from different systems are commonly used together, hence drink bottles being measured in liters, ounces or even a gallon.

I had a fourth grade teacher obsessed with english vs metric so that's how I know that. If you didn't, you're likely googling it to confirm it now... in which case... why ask a question on the Internet when the answer can be googled in seconds?

You're over thinking this way too much. Read the posts between midtown and I, if you're half as good at playing logic games or solving puzzles, you should be able to figure out where I'm going with this question. So far, you're so far off base, it's almost embarrassing.

I never tried to pass it off as my own, you made that assumption. I stated I cut and pasted it, please explain to all us how that is "trying to pass it off as my own". Please provide one bit of evidence supporting your claim that I tried to pass if off as my own.

Looks to me like you tried to pass it off as your own. You put the evidence out there for the whole world to see. You admitted to the cut & paste after Midtowner had your *** for lunch.Do you want to see the post again? No reference to source when you first put it out there. Maybe you didn't know about the software our sorry ***, overpaid teachers use to catch students that rip stuff off the internet and try to claim as their own? I have the software , maybe Midtown does as well. You better hope somebody doesn't sue you. And you accuse me of intellectual dishonesty on another thread? Seriously dude, what is this? I am surprised some of the credible conservatives around here don't give you the boot.

Wow.. it's 11/13 and TH is still butthurt about getting caught stealing.

Pounds in a ton? Really? What a bunch of childish nonsense. Grow up.

And the righties attacking lawyers while bemoaning such personal attacks as being called out for plagiarism. The humanity!

Is that why he needs to know about pounds and tons? Because it's a misdemeanor if you steal pounds of stuff, but a felony if you steal tons, right? :P
