Earthquake rattles KC area

INDEPENDENCE, MO (KCTV) -

A moderate earthquake in Oklahoma rattled nerves in the Kansas City area Saturday night.

The 5.2 earthquake struck just east of Oklahoma City in the same area as a quake earlier Saturday.

But this time the quake was also felt in the Kansas City area including Brookside and Independence. Local law enforcement agencies reported a flood of telephone calls.

KCTV5 Meteorologist Tom Wachs said it was a moderate earthquake but unusual for the Midwest. The earthquake was about three miles underneath the earth's surface.

Would be cool to see the radar on Tulsa Area too as I swear...that one really freaked my kids out. We were all talking and standing around together when it hit and their eyes got as big as Herbies....even freakier was that the news was talking about it when it hit too and we were all watching it.

A memorable event that our kids will talk about the rest of their lives. What's kind of cool is my Daughter is really into science and now she has firsthand experience of what an earthquake is like. I'm glad she didn't have to learn what an earthquake was like from a 7.0.....lol

I was in a 5.8 in Tokyo many years ago. This was very similar and the instant is began, the memory of previous quakes kick in and there is no doubt as to what is happening.

Last night I was standing on a backyard patio facing east...all of a sudden it felt like I was skateboarding, left....right....left....right. Didn't make much noise though. Not as much as last year's 5.4 that was 4 miles from my house. (makes sense, I suppose.)

Unfortunatly she'll probably get more chances than she wants. I have a feeling that this might be a semi regular thing now. Things like this happen in cycles and seem to be happen more frequently instead of less frequently... National Geographic actually found her in some village in afghanistan and took some more pics of her and her family. As of then at least, she was still alive. It was a few years ago now. And alive might be stretching it living there.

Yep and she aged about 40 years or more in the 20 or so year that had past. I guess wars and Taliban will do that to you.

More recent pictures of her were featured as part of a cover story on her life in the April 2002 issue of National Geographic and she was the subject of a television documentary (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Television_documentary), entitled Search for the Afghan Girl, which aired in March 2002. In recognition of her, National Geographic set up the Afghan Girls Fund, a charitable organization with the goal of educating Afghan girls and young women. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Afghan_Girl#cite_note-6) In 2008, the scope of the fund was broadened to include boys and the name was changed to Afghan Children's Fund

I feel like we should just go to the PAC now... we have earthquakes, so that should qualify us as members.

I remember seeing that. Not an easy life, especially for a female.

as an aside...

Earthquakes are more common here than most Oklahomans realize.

In a typical year, dozens of quakes shake the Sooner State. But, their frequency seems to be picking up quite quickly.

According to the Oklahoma Geologic Survey, more than a thousand earthquakes shook Oklahoma in 2010, and the state is on pace to top 1,200 in 2011.

The recent string of quakes all occurred along the Wilzetta fault line, which runs through Lincoln, Pottawatomie and Creek Counties. The Wilzetta fault is known as a strike-slip fault. Earthquakes happen on this type of fault when two land masses slide past each other horizontally.

I felt it here in Norman -- three in three days is a little much but this was not as bad as Saturday which seemed to go on forever.

Do me a favor. If and when you're diagnosed with an ailment that will ultimately lead to your death (most likely from choking) let us all know so we can laugh at you.

Thank goodness there was an earthquake.

I had just returned from the A&M game (to Richardson, TX) and right before 11:00 pm my 15 yr old daughter came out of her upstairs room and said she wasn't going back in there because it was possessed. She was sitting in bed reading and her room started swaying side-to-side with her light fixture was swinging back and forth. I kiddingly told her it must have been an earthquake. The next day, we found out it was and she was thrilled to know there were no paranormal activities going on in the house. Strangely though, we did not feel it downstairs at all.......go figure.

I don't know if I would have felt it if I hadn't heard it first....
