Great for our coach to put Whaley's mind at rest. Stoops knows that he doesn't deserve to live in worry for the next several months and he did the right thing. I am grateful to have such an upstanding person for OUr team!

Tons of good news here (http://www.tulsaworld.com/sportsextra/OU/article.aspx?subjectid=92&articleid=20111101_92_B6_hOUNOT93936)

Stoops also explained that health care works the same for walk-ons as it does for scholarship players.

"I think in all cases - scholarship and non-scholarship - the parents' insurance handles it first, and we have all the deductibles and anything that isn't handled by the family," Stoops said. "That's the case with everybody."

So, OU will not only take care of his scholly soon, but he won't have to worry about his family paying outta pocket for the broken ankle.

Get well soon, Dom!

Great story on Dom. I didn't know he had to take care of his siblings while his parents were deployed... Why he wasn't at Langston for his 2nd year per DOK story. If so, glad he is a Sooner.

My question at this point would be this:

How is Whaley going to pay for his food and rent until December? The kid can't stand on a broken ankle (even in a walking cast) at Subway for 20 hours a week, and since he's still labeled a walk-on, he can't eat with the team (if I was told correctly). The worst part is, we as fans can't lift a finger to help him or the NCAA will come down on him and OU.

My understanding is that Dom has been using the GI Bill benefits available to him from his parents' service--those are now transferable to family members, yay! It covers tuition, pays a stipend for housing, and a $1000/year for books.

I THINK he gets to keep those benefits--in which case, as the scholly covers his tuition, he'll get the GI Bill money in that amount in cash. Seems like I've read that's how it worked for some other scholly athletes who had these benefits. HOPEFULLY, that will be the case, and he will go from broke to flush, and be able to pay off any loans he might have had to take or whatever.

I think he's still a military dependent, as well, so that means Tricare will cover all of his medical expenses 100%, as long as he played by their rules, used one of their network docs, etc, which isn't difficult, they are widely accepted. Even if he did not, the coverage is still good, so anything that his parents or OU, ultimately, would pick up, would not be much.

So, this is really good news for Dom, at least. I know he'd rather still be on the field, but maybe now he can just focus on healing and come back to give em hell next year.

NORMAN — Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops said Tuesday running back Dominique Whaley will rehab his fractured left ankle as usual, but probably won’t be able to participate in practice next spring.

“I don’t believe it’ll be in the spring (when he returns),” Stoops said during his weekly press conference. “It’ll be in fall. I mean, he’ll be working on it, he’ll be progressing through it, but I don’t see him being on the field in the spring. I wouldn’t think.”

This is going to be quite a rehab period.

after what he's been through the last few years, he definitely deserves a scholly. hate to lose him with the bulk of the season ahead but good to know he'll be at school.

This is strictly making a comparison and no way saying Dom doesn't deserve the scholarship...
Does anyone know what the official scholarship covers? I know they get books and a housing/food allowance if they don't live in the dorms but what is the $$? One of the articles said Dom was currently using his mother's transferred GI Bill benefits and I wonder which is more advantageous for him. Under 9/11 transfer rules, he gets full tuition and fees paid directly to the school so he never worries about that bill. He also gets $1000/year for books & supplies and $978/month housing stipend. BS said he gets same medical coverage as any other player, so that's a wash. What else does he get from OU and would he be better off declining the scholarship to stay on GI Bill?

I hope he makes a full and rapid recovery, has a spectacular year, and goes very high in the draft.

Exactly. Now everyone who has been wailing and gnashing their teeth about giving Whaley a scholarship can finally just shut the **** up. We all knew he couldnt give him a scholarship until December. And we all knew he was going to give Whaley a scholarship.

Yeah...the reaction to this news is quite weird really...Like there was a possibility of him not getting one.

Its ****ing unreal. Its not like we are talking about Les Miles, or Houston Nutt, or somebody else. We are talking about Bob Stoops. I just cant believe people are so surprised. I mean the guy goes to the Cancer clinic once a week, but he isnt going to give the starting RB a scholarship.

Most people (at least the smart ones) knew Dom was going to get a scholarship. I think the reaction is more about it actually happening now, after the injury. Also, if all the conference realignment crap has taught us anything, it's that nothing is official, until it's official.
