So sad, what a friend he was to OU, he may not have been the world's greatest PBP announcer, but I knew he loved the Sooners as much as I do, you could hear it in his voice, the pure joy everytime he got to say, "TOUCHDOWN, OKLAHOMA!!!". RIP, BBS!

I always enjoyed him on the News and OU broadcasts. His enthusiasm for OU added to the atmosphere for me when I listened to the radio. Bob Barry was so familiar over the years he seemed like a beloved neighbor. My dad saw Bob at Braums just a month or two ago. I'll miss him. I'm glad OU honored him while he was still alive to enjoy it.

When I was a news intern at KFOR in 1989, the Barrys, Senior and Junior, were both always polite and treated everone respectfully. Not everyone was so gracious, but I do not have one unkind word to say about either of the Barrys.

Say what you want about his stumblings during his football announcing days, but I have to say that I absolutely miss the guy over the air. His laughter was genuine and he poked fun at himself more than we poked fun at him.

Rest in peace, Bob. You've now got the best seat in the house over both God's Sooner team up there and our Sooner team here on earth.

I've seen this happen more than once -- a man works hard all his life, then dies just a few weeks or months after retirement.

Bob had had open heart surgery a number of years ago; he lost his wife of 50+ years just a few years ago. He was 80 or 81 at his passing.

He was a lucky guy; he worked in a field he truly loved, and he got paid to watch Sooner football and basketball games and to share them with the rest of us. The NewsOK article mentioned many of the memorable games he called, and I listened to many of them, from my childhood up into my late 50s; it's like seeing part of my childhood disappear.

I will miss Bob, his jokes, flubs, and TOUCHDOWN OKLAHOMAs. Sincerest condolences to his family.

From KFOR:

Bob Barry Sr. passes at the age of 80

NORMAN, Okla.—The NewsChannel 4 family is mourning the loss of one of our own today.

Former KFOR sports director and longtime sports announcer Bob Barry Sr. passed away at the age of 80.

Barry was found inside his home in Norman after neighbors grew concerned that he had not picked up his morning newspaper.

Barry was the voice of the Sooners from 1961 until 1972 and again from 1991 until he retired from the radio last spring.

He also was a play-by-play announcer for the University of Tulsa basketball team and also announced football games for Oklahoma State University in between stints at OU.

I heard BBJ on the radio around the time his dad was retiring and they asked him why his dad worked so long...BBJ said that his dad had a fear that he would be one of those guys that retired and died a short time afterwards and that he kept working basically because he felt like it was keeping him alive..I don't have a link or anything to that, but I distinctly remember him saying that and feeling that maybe the guy is ready to go when he retired.

Me too, Lott, that was the first thought I had when I saw that. Sweet. I have those kind of neighbors, it's allsome.

Also, great quote from Toby:

Current OU Announcer Toby Rowland:
"I never saw Bob have a bad day. He loved life. And he loved his job. Even after 50 years of broadcasting he would show up at the stadium like a kid in a candy store. His play by play style was unmistakable, but it is his gentle, kind and fun-loving spirit that I will always remember. His advice and words of wisdom will forever be cherished in my heart. This is a tremendously sad day, but I rejoice that Heaven just got a Legend."

The torch was passed just in time, I suppose, and it looks like a good choice was made. Class act, the both of them.

Whoa. There are times when I don't get my morning paper. Neighbors don't even say a word. If they were that concerned about him something must have been going on that BBS would not let on to the general public.

Many years ago, my wife's grandmother just up and died in her sleep at the age of 64, with no prior health problems. Such things happen. A good time to remember the words of Jonathan Edwards, the great American preacher of the 17th century:

"Resolved, never to do anything, which I should be afraid to do, if it were the last hour of my life."

Sounds like he missed the KSU game. Per this DOK story, Big Bob's Saturday newspaper and mail were untouched, which caused his neighbors to become concerned. BBJr said he tried to call his dad repeatedly after the game, but got no answer. His oldest son said it looked like he'd taken a nap. Sounds like a good way to go.

So many saturdays spent in the truck with Grandad listening to Big Bob call the OU game.. I always meant to send him a letter or something and tell him what he meant to us, and looking back how much more it means to me, sharing that time with Grandad, me, Big Bob, and our beloved sooners.
