Likely...almost certainly. Seeing how it was fallen on and him writhing in pain on the field leaves no doubt in my mind he'll be on the injury list for the rest of the regular season. :(

Hopefully that's just fatalistic thinking on my part. I hope he still gets his scholarship even if there is an injury.

Why am I not surprised this happened against a Bill Snyder coached team?

air casts are not used for sprains. When those come out, bones are typically broken. :(

Broken or sprained ankle, most likely.

There was nothing intentional. He just unfortunately got rolled up.

Actually, it's better that it's a broken bone. Those heal much cleaner/faster than torn ligaments/tendons, etc. Much less rehab, less likely to lose a step. If you have to have an injury, a bone is preferable to soft tissue, especially anything to do with the knee.

Ts and Ps for Dom, just hate it for him so much, really appreciate what he's done for OUr team, all the blood, sweat and tears. Get well soon, Dom, we'll see ya next fall.

Can he get a medical redshirt for this?

TheBobbyTrain
10/29/2011, 04:33 PM
From an Athletic Trainer's view -

It is *likely* a fractured fibula.

If it is a fracture and not a clean break - could be back in 5-7 weeks. (Bowl game)
Clean break - surgery , 6 weeks non-weight bearing and 12-16 weeks total before he is back in any sort of playing shape, would likely sit out for spring football.

Either way he isn't going to be back this regular season.

So does the University pay the kid's medical bills even though he wasn't on a scholarship? Has he played too much this year to get a medical redshirt?

Tell that to Adrian Taylor.

Hated this. However, I don't believe this is the last we hear from Whaley. He made his way from being a sandwich artist to starting for the Sooners, something tells me he has the drive to come back from this.

I know. But the issue is the extent of the break. A severe break is almost assuredly going to blast the surrounding soft tissue. Hopefully it's not as bad as it looked.

It could, sure. Hopefully that's not the case. My point is that maybe he's better off that a joint wasn't involved, as was the case with AT, nasty ankle break. If this is his lower leg bone, not the knee or ankle, that should heal a little faster and with less impact on him afterwards than the other type of injury would. Whatever the case may be, prayers for him for a speedy and complete recovery.

When I was AD at a college, our insurance covered athletic related injuries for any member of the team. Scholarship status was not a factor. I imagine OU has a similar policy.

My left nad says that's a tib/fib break. Look at the angles from the replay. His lower leg is effed. Hence the cast like it is and not above the knee.

Medial tib/fib.

Book it.

They usually immobilize the joint above and the joint below the break, with a few exceptions.

^^^ this

I seriously almost threw up when I saw that injury on replay. Not because I was selfishly thinking of myself as a sooner fan, but because such a deserving, hard-working kid might have lost a chance at a scholly.

Still makes me sick to think about it.

CNN is saying fractured left ankle. Surgery tomorrow to insert a pin.

Sooner95
10/29/2011, 09:41 PM
It's not a Tib/Fib. I can speak of this from experience. The simple fact that he was back on the field in a walking cast proves this.

Tib/fib provides a very high risk for blood flow and it must be kept elevated at all times, otherwsie the lower leg/foot would turn black in minutes due to the fact the body cannot circulate the blood properly with both bones broken.

I'm going with he broke the fibula down near the ankle. This small bone is not important for leg support or weight bearing and can be cast quickly. One could be allowed to get around with the use of crutches as well.

A pin will be put in to provide support and to allow the fibula to fuse properly. Best guess, 8 weeks for healing and then rehab can begin. Being an athlete, this could be quicker, barring Whaley's body does not reject the metal composition of the pin and/or infection occurs.

I wish him nothing but the best and hope he can return to full form so he can regain his starting job and get that scholarship he so deserves.

Did anyone else see Snyder go over to him when he was down? Seemed like he gave him a reassuring pat on the shoulder and some words of encouragement.

It made me think a lot better of Snyder. To do that for the other team's player shows his heart's in the right place.

Snyder's a top notch leader. I doubt that he wishes ill will on any opposing player.
Dom will be on scholly next year whether he can play or not.

I bet he gets a 6 hole plate on the fiblua and ligament repair/screw on the medial side.

A pin is more than enough if there is only one break.

Again remains to be seen as none of know exactly the extent of the injury. I'm just giving my best guess based on experience.
