It's a shame he never knew the impact he had on this board..that every meltdown aftewards would be compared to and sometimes named "going Helander"...

You talking bout the guys who stole Memorial Stadium benches and was selling them as keepsakes?I am a proud owner of two said benches. SeattleOUStudent was one of those dudes.

John Helander was the one who was trying to get stuff together for Hollis Price and family after Hurricane Katrina, but ran into a bunch of problems with the NCAA.

RIP John Helander.

Yep! This is between John and us. His Family shouldn't suffer for his EPIC on-line Meltdown.

It's cool he continued to support the Sooners even though he took his Mensa Profile and left. Most Mensa folks I know aren't quitters. I guess there's always going to be someone that just can't hack the Sooner Mensa Club. :D

Hopefully after he left he enjoyed his life and Family.

I met John at OU in '83 or '84 even though we grew up in Tulsa about 2 miles from each other. He was a good friend and I just found out about his passing on Friday. It is funny that we were friends because we are fairly opposite... he a homerun hitter that would often strikeout whereas I didn't have the power and have to settle for singles. He had suffered quite a few physical ailments in the last few years including heart problems. Thankfully he did pass in his sleep.

Last time I saw him was in Tulsa and I called him from Louies (at 101/Yale?) at the beginning of the '10 Utah State and he came over and we watched the game. He was a died-hard Sooner fan for sure. If you have the 2000 KSU game recorded you can see a picture of us waving phone fingers after Savages' 74-yard TD. We went to a restaurant in their campus corner area after the game and the wait staff recognized us as the "phone finger guys." We had been on TV the week before by the local ABC affiliate KTUL when we trounced Texas. So, John said we had been on local and National TV and now his goal was to get on International TV... that is the way he thought/dreamed.

We also attended the Independence Bowl in 99/00 (met Spencer Tillman there, nice guy!) and with others to the Rose Bowl in 02/03. About anywhere you went with John you would run into someone he knew... he had many friends and was about a nice a guy that you could meet.

I will be back in Tulsa in 2 weeks in which time I hope to pass along my condolences to his family and share my thanks for his friendship over the years. Rest in peace my friend, I'll see you when I get to the other side.
