The Tulsa Area Trail and Ultra Runners (TATUR) put on an ultra October 15th called the Pumpkin Holler Hunnerd (http://tatur.org/pumpkin-holler.html). It featured a 50km, a 100km and a 100 mile run. For perspective a marathon is 26.2 miles or 42.2 km. I did the 100km.

The course was challenging, the weather was perfect and the race organization superb.

Here are some photos and words (https://picasaweb.google.com/RacerX4OU/PumpkinHollerHunnerd?authuser=0&authkey=Gv1sRgCKjM5Zbsw-XwNw&feat=directlink).

I'll do it again when/if the OU home schedule allows. That's always the challenge with fall events and OU season tickets.

While is was running my girls really enjoyed the Cherokee Heritage Center (http://www.cherokeeheritage.org/). It wasn't very busy and they were given a personal tour by a Cherokee Princess which impressed them to no end.

I appreciate the feedback given a month or so ago on eating establishments. My family enjoyed the Katfish Kabin while I was out running and we all enjoyed the Restaurant of the Cherokees the next day.

How long did it take/how fast did you average?

16:16:34 is my all inclusive time if you will. In ultras the normal human beings stop at aid stations, walk (especially steep hills), etc. Also, running on the dirt/rock road is nothing like asphalt, no matter how smooth it is. The concentration and caution it took at night was something I hadn't really considered. That is a list of what is called running excuses.

It works out to 15:42/mile. My most recent marathon was 10:47/mile. I'm slow.

BTW - I had an absolute blast at the 100km. Quite the personal challenge.

and for those who choose not to plow through the photos, my 9 year-old did 9 miles of it with me.

Congrats. I ran one marathon a few years ago, but now mostly to half marathons. They are much more enjoyable for me. However, last spring I helped for a colleague for about 30 miles who was running the Texas Independence Relay. It's a 203 mile relay from Bastrop to Houston. Most groups have 8-10 person relay teams. He went solo. DNF'ed at 185 miles, though.

It sort of inspired me to get into ultra. I am thinking about doing a 50K next year.

I'm jealous. Running for even a few miles kills my knee after the surgery. :(

TATUR does a 50k at Lake McMurtry (http://tatur.org/LMTR.html).

New Mexico has some ultra runners who live in the mountains of South Central/Southeast part of the state. Those people are SERIOUS about running. Obsessed does not begin to describe them. Running multi miles at altitude is pretty strenous training for them.

did you only walk up hills, or did you follow the 5/1 rule?

I had a plan, then abandoned it. I was originally going to run .75, walk .25. But as soon as I started to get a flavor for the hills, I walked the steep ones and pretty much ran everything else. If it was a long running stretch then I took breaks. It ended up not being that structured.

The 9 miles I did with my daughter was however she wanted to do it

My sister was going to run it until she broke her foot a few weeks and had to have a screw put in it.

Also, one of my ex-wives works at the Heritage Center. She's Cherokee, but no princess.

Glad you enjoyed your visit!

I know an Oklahoman (Chisholm Deupree) who has done that. He's busy this weekend being a race director for a 24 hour race.
