It is almost that time of year again, so before we start, ladies and gentlemen, Soonerpsycho:

http://soonerpsycho.com/spfarksandpics/kingkongbriner.gif

We have new talent incoming, we have lost a first round draft pick and starting speedy point guard to the WNBA, and we have the best coach in the entire sport in Sherri Coale, and the best leader a team could have in Whitney Hand.

So in the coming weeks, I'll once again do some sort of profile thing for our incoming players that we're here last year and such.

In the meantime, check out the longterm vBookie event on womens basketball that you can vBet on till November here (http://www.soonerfans.com/forums/showthread.php?159928-Longterm-vBet-How-does-the-womens-basketball-team-do-this-season) to predict how the team will do this year. Hint: They will do really well!

Big 12 media days are going on for basketball and Baylor coach Kim Mulkey delivered some fun:

Link (http://www.tulsaworld.com/blogs/sportspost.aspx?DIVORCE_Baylor_wont_play_AM/9-12916)

Mulkey then repeated quotes from Texas A&M’s president in which he compared Big 12 affiliation to a value-less marriage that’s over.

"And that stuck with me," she said. "So, basically he's talking about a divorce. And I think I know a little bit about a divorce. And my feeling is this: If a man wants to divorce me and says our relationship has no value to him, and then he asks me if he can sleep with me, the answer is: No!"

Skeletor is indeed divorced.

"I can tell you that she has healed. She is moving well. She looks much more like the Whitney Hand you saw as a true freshman," coach Sherri Coale said. "I don't know if any of us realized the pain she was in last year. What I see now is a kid who is really comfortable in her own skin as a basketball player. Having her back and healthy is a huge breath of fresh air for everyone."

:D @ that

 @ getting picked to be #4 in the Big 12 this season

More Sherri here. (http://www.tulsaworld.com/sportsextra/OU/article.aspx?subjectid=92&articleid=20111020_92_0_KANSAS302803)

“We have the best conference in the country with RPI, fan attendance, the number of teams that have gone on to the Final Four,” Coale said. “We’ve got it all. Again, why would you break that up?”

For a womens bball fan, the Big 12 is the best conferenece. Alas, a lot of us are also football fans...

Sherri totally had a blog entry last week that I missed. Check it out here. (http://www.soonersports.com/sports/w-baskbl/spec-rel/coale_space.html) An excerpt:

I had an amazing tour last week of the Charles and Peggy Stephenson Cancer Center on the University of Oklahoma's medical campus. It made me proud to be an Oklahoman, prouder yet to work for this visionary institution, and, simultaneously, it made me feel like an insignificant gnat. Talk about doing stuff that matters.

With our team only about A WEEK away from opening their season exhibition-style, I really need to get going! We have FOUR freshmen. I'll start today with...

Kaylon Williams
http://i44.tinypic.com/9q9pxy.png

A top rated prospect in the country, but from a short distance away in Midwest City, this froshie power forward might provide some relief to Joanna McFarland and Nicole Griffin in grabbing rebounds. Expected contribution? Immediately!

Check out a preview video of her on SS.com here. (http://www.soonersports.com/sports/w-baskbl/okla-w-baskbl-body.html) If it's not on the main page anymore try this link (http://www.soonersports.com/allaccess/?media=272325).

She already has a nickname: "Kay Kay" (story in the video) and can juggle (again, see the video for the back story).

You can read more about her on SS.com here. (http://www.soonersports.com/sports/w-baskbl/spec-rel/102011aab.html)

Seeing that video almost brings a tear to my eye. I remember warming up for pep band in that gym when there were a LOT less banners on those walls. This past decade? Absolutely phenomenal.

PS: I posted our first exhibition game on vBookie here. (http://www.soonerfans.com/forums/showthread.php?161694-11-2-First-Sooner-womens-bball-game!) You can also do the longterm one here (http://www.soonerfans.com/forums/showthread.php?159928-Longterm-vBet-How-does-the-womens-basketball-team-do-this-season) till opening tipoff!

PPS: Where are the photos that you always demand? They haven't posted the media guide online yet. If they ever do, I'll try to get more photos from it up here.

Sa-weet! I remember my first impression of Whitney was when she was still in high school and beating that Dallas Maverick in a three-point contest. She told the kids that she was going to OU and there were a few boos so she got a jokingly indignant look on her face... and then did Hook em

Still not sure which made me realize she would be a great Sooner... the fact that she could be an NBA'er in a 3-contest, or doing horns down :D

Whoever is in charge of putting media guides online must read this blog because it's up now!

So, you can expect my preview-the-season-by-showing-you-our-awesome-freshmen to be a little bit more... picture-esque!

But please, go check out the media guide. I am just now flipping through it and if you don't already you will love this program. If you don't love this program after reading just a few words about them, you are a bad person that probably hates puppies and ice cream. ;)

Today's featured freshman is...
Sharane Campbell
http://i39.tinypic.com/1z2zubq.png
The best way to tell if I want to talk to whoever is knocking on my front door is how they react to me "restraining" my dogs. These dogs don't need to be restrained, but if the person at the door is acting like they're going to lunge through the glass at them, I know that they don't deserve a lot of time and thankfully, they usually seem quite eager to get away from my dogs as fast as possible.

Thus, when I saw this pic of Sharane in the media guide, I knew it had to be one to introduce her to you all with --- a dog person is a good person! And she wants to be a vet apparently, so she's now a GREAT person in my eyes :D

A Spencer (Oklahoma!) small forward, I would expect her to not get a lot of playing time come conference time, since Whitney Hand is likely going to be in that spot on the starting lineup and the main rotation. However, against some speedier teams, I could see us going smaller and using both Whitney and Sharane at the same time.

I know we had multiple times last year that both Carlee and Whitney were on the court, so it's not out of the question by any means. Like Stoops, Sherri is not afraid to play freshmen who have earned playing time, so a lot of hard work will get her in the rotation, if not a starter spot.

A big shoutout to the SF.com fark board for hating on Britney Griner (and the resident Baylor fan trying to defend her, lol). Check it out here. (http://www.soonerfans.com/forums/showthread.php?161252-Brittney-Griner)

And now for the latest of our four-part series, BETTER KNOW A FRESHMAN!

DaShawn Harden
http://i42.tinypic.com/2dkle9u.png

No, I have no idea how to pronounce all these new girls' names, either, but hopefully within a month I'll be there :)

DaShawn (Day-Shawn? Dah-Shawn? D'Shawn???) is a freshmen guard from the great state of Kansas*

*state might not be so great if football loses to KSU this weekend.

According to multiple recruiting services, she was quite the pickup of a point guard this season after leading her school to an undefeated season.

It is clear that Sherri is looking for her next speedy guard to lead the offense. Alas, Jaz Hartman, who I suspected would at least kick off the season in that replacement role, has an ACL issue that will keep her out this season (yes, Whitney and Jaz are from the same class and now by a cruel twist of ACLness, are once again scheduled to start and end their OU careers together).

So... will a freshman guard step into this role sooner (hehe "Sooner") than expected?

Yesterday's featured freshman, Sharane, is also a speedy short guard. But, so is our 3-specialist from last year, Aaryn Ellenberg, who is now a sophomore. So is our OTHER 3-specialist, Morgan Le Tre, who is also now a sophomore. Whitney is the other-other 3-specialist and is also classified as a guard, but I don't anticipate her leading the offense... just being a leader in other ways.

In other words... massive overload at the guard position will keep us fresh in case our hot hands cool off from behind the arch or turnovers get the best of whoever Sherri chooses to the lead the offense.

Hmmmm... in any event, yet another reason to be excited about the upcoming season.

So apparently Kruger and Coale are both supportive of the NCAA decisions yesterday.

Link (http://www.tulsaworld.com/blogs/sportspost.aspx?Kruger_Coale_on_board_with_NCAA_re form/12-12995)

I have a feeling with all of our transfers and jucos lately that our men's program will not be compliant with that grad rate thing in a few years, though :(

And now, part 4 of 4 of our "BETTER KNOW A FRESHMAN" series:

Katherine Zander
http://i43.tinypic.com/14jnvbs.jpg

As a sidenote, the random white bars you see in photos are captions from the media guide. The original one I posted said "ANIMAL HOUSE" with several letters cut off, so I've decided to just omit the letters before another teams gets ahold of the images and goes all Britney Griner on them. In any event, go check out the media guide for more photos and to see what the captions were :)

Katherine is from the great state of Florida*

* Haha to "The U" for yet another loss last night!

And while she was listed as a highly-rated center recruit, she is now classified as a forward. A 6-foot, 4-inch forward. If you are new to the college womens bball game, that is TALL for a forward. However, we already have a 6'6" center (Nicole) and 6'5" center (Jelina) and our forwards are almost 6'4" themselves (Joanna and Kay-Kay are both 6'3", while Jaq is 6'2") so that extra inch is not a big deal to me (or Sherri, apparently).

They usually don't list per-game steals stats, so that's is encouraging... so is the fact that she averaged double digits for both rebounds and points (although if I was more than foot taller than I am now, I might find it a lot easier to grab the ball before people that are badger's actual height, yes?). She is also apparently a swimmer... sorry in advance for OU only having an outdoor pool that closes a month after school starts, heh. :)

So, that concludes our preseason intro-the-freshmen thing. Once again, the men's season starts Tuesday and the women's season starts Wednesday. Gets some vBookie vBetting in, get excited, yell SOONER when Billy yells BOOMER! :)

Can you believe that the men start TOMORROW and the women start in TWO DAYS?! Neither can I.

We were picked No. 15 overall (http://www.soonersports.com/sports/w-baskbl/spec-rel/102911aaa.html). Stupid Baylor was #1. You might recall that the Big 12 coaches chose OU as the fourth best (if not, read here (http://www.soonersports.com/sports/w-baskbl/spec-rel/101211aad.html)). The media is either as sick of UT as we are, or they ignored this, heh. Texas was down at No. 24. The Lady Aggies ("Laggies") were #6 in the AP poll.

But, enough on those uninformed, unbiased reports. HERE is what you really want to read: Complete biased, but fearless predictions on OU womens basketball greatness! (with photos)

1: Whitney Hand has a better basketball season that Landry Jones' football season.
http://i44.tinypic.com/33dbext.png

If she could be amazing late last year while playing through ACL pain, she will be even more amazing this year. You all will turn that "He-Man Whitney Haters Club" over on the football board into a "He-Man Whitney Lovers Club." And then Landry will kill you. Or Landry's dad will sue you. :P

2: Joanna McFarland will have a breakout year.
http://i40.tinypic.com/2133e2p.png
Once you get over the shock of her BRIGHT RED HAIR, omg, you will remember that a lot of our past post presence is long gone. No more Abi (yes, Hakeem's daughter) Olajuwon, no more Paris (cue shot of daddy in crowd) twins. It's Joanna's year. Beware, opposing defenses. Beware.

3: Aaryn (don't call her "Ellenburger") Ellenberg will lead this offense like a D-Rob that can make three's consistently.
http://i43.tinypic.com/1z51xmf.png

D-Rob had few weaknesses, which is why she might be one of our few Sooner alums to succeed in the WNBA. However, the three-point shot was NOT her shot. It is Aaryn's shot. But she has other shots. With Jaz out, look for "Vegas" to lead this offense. To greatness. To triple digits. You name it :)

4: Nicole Griffin will block, and block, and block. Haha, Britney Griner.
http://i41.tinypic.com/1zgh1h.png

She is Baylor's Behemoth without the attitude problems or the dunking problem. She is crazy tall AND pretty talented. I worry that she's also thin and might be prone to injuries, but this will not stop her from camping in the post, just waiting for someone to think they have an easy lay-up. Um, no. Your shot = blocked. Haha.

I will be back with more fearless predictions tomorrow.

badger
11/1/2011, 02:26 PM
I am back with more fearless predictions!

5: Morgan "Le Tre" Hook leads the team in three point shooting.
http://i44.tinypic.com/do9jd5.png
We saw glimpses of it last season during her froshie year... but she will have tough competition with both "Vegas" and Whitney. However, something tells me she will be the go-to shooter more often than before. Probably because Vegas and Whitney will have other team responsibilities besides long-distance shooting, but even so, Morgan seemed to have the most sure-fire shot, sophomore slumps be damned!

6: Jeffcoat proves once again why she is the good twin.
http://i42.tinypic.com/2zity87.png
First, she chooses OU instead of UT like her twin brother. Then, her brother thugs it up during the OU game while he and the rest of the whorns go 5-7 and Sherri's Sooners have yet another deep tourney run. Now, as UT once again is having Mack scream "NOT OUR STANDARD!" in the midst of futile clapping, Jaq Jeffcoat will step into a role similar to Amanda Thompson's a few years ago.

7: Sherri adds to her growing collection of trophies.
http://i42.tinypic.com/szfzmh.png
There is no trophy for going fourth place in the conference or just making the postseason. There are, however, trophies for Big 12 championships (tourney and season) and Final Fours/runner ups/nat'l titles! And Sherri will add to this trophy collection.

And with that, I conclude this fearless preseason projection list. Please remember that our drive for a FOURth Final Four starts tomorrow night! BOOOOOOOOOOOOMERRRRRRRRRRRRR!

My compy was acting funky last night so no badgering you all about watching the game :)

Oh man... what a game. When Sherri sat down for the postgame interview, the NOT-Billy Tubbs guy was like this:

Other guy: Let's start with the positives.
Sherri: There were positives?

Or something like that. Basically, Sherri didn't say it vindictively or anything, but almost laughing in an unbelieveable fashion-like way.

When UCO stays with you during the first half of the first half like they're a ranked opponent or a conference foe or something, there is a bit of WTF to be thought, especially when they are basically the University of Edmond, started four guards and a forward against our much taller, more athletic team and they don't even recruit outside the state.

Soooo... let's try to stay positive while staying realistic, shall we? Some notes from the game:

Lon must be jealous of our attendance: More than 5k showed up for this. There were clearly more there (or at least more in the lower bowl) than the night before for the men's opener. Either the yellow shirts need to lay off the people that wanna sit closer for men's game or they need to figure out what the women are doing to get so many more butts in seats (besides winning and having stability in the coaching position).

Marvelous McFarland: You know what our first shot of the game was? Joanna hitting a 3. She then proceeded to get 10 boards and was all over the place diving for loose balls and steals and everything else.

Healthy Hand: Whitney does in fact seem 100 percent. She doesn't seem to focus on 3's as much as she did her froshie year, but that's probably on purpose. She shot very well from the floor, free and three.

Freshmen to watch: Two of em, DeShawn Harden and Sharane Campbell. They both had 12 points each and while they had some signs of froshiness (DeShawn had 9 turnovers, for example), they will likely contribute to this team's successes (hopefully not failures) this season.

Nicole Griffin will block you: FIVE blocks! The only thing that worries me is that she seemed to get winded a little bit too much. But, maybe you get winded more when you're 6'6". I dunno, since I'm stuck in this 5' region for the rest of my life.

We might have lost another captain: Jaz Hartman, out for the season with an ACL, is one of our three captains. Lyndsey Cloman, another captain (they're voted on by the team), had a nasty spill at center court while clutching her knee. I hope she's OK. You all can probably guess who captain No. 3 is (Hint: It's Whitney).

We shoot 3s: Morgan "Le Tre" was 3 for 3. Aaryn "Vegas" Ellenberg was 4 for 12. Everyone else that attempted at least one was 1 for 2. So, we were 10 for 21 overall. Not bad!

Terribad Turnovers: We had 26. Not a typo. Twenty-six. It was laughable (probably why Sherri was laughing in the postgame interview when "positives" were mentioned) how many errant passes there were. A lot of unforced errors (been watching a lot of baseball lately), a lot of sloppiness, a lot of seeing Sherri facepalm as the camera panned back across the bench (kid you not).

Go Sooner Sports Network: I dunno if they're trying to start their own Bevo TV or what, but the quality of broadcast for both this game and the men's game from the night before was pretty good. It wasn't the highest quality that you see on some of the biggest networks for football, but was definitely better than what I've seen on some channels last year when they broadcast womens games (ESPN included).

Player of the game: Joanna McFarland. From hitting the opening 3 to getting 4 steals and 10 boards while only being blamed for one turnover, I can ignore the fact that the opening 3 was her only points of the game.

And now, a quote from Sherri Coale:

I think we were a little dazed. The freshman just got completely lost and would stop and kind of look around and you don't have time to look around, you've got to keep playing your tail off like your hair is on fire and figure it out on the fly. Then I think when Lyndsey (Cloman) went down it was another shock. I think we had a hard time getting our focus back the way it's supposed to be and that's to be expected when a teammate goes down. We'll bounce back and we'll get better from it, but I thought Morgan's line was really good.

Next game: Thursday, Nov. 20, at 7 p.m. Once again televised by Cox on 3/703.

BOOOOMERRRRRRR!!!!

I lied--- the next game is the 10th, not the 20th, and it's against... Grand Canyon????

GRAND CANYON
http://www.me-ceo.com/images/stories/grand-canyon-2.jpg

The Grand Canyon is a steep-sided canyon carved by the Colorado River in the United States in the state of Arizona. It is largely contained within the Grand Canyon National Park, the 15th national park in the United States. President Theodore Roosevelt was a major proponent of preservation of the Grand Canyon area, and visited it on numerous occasions to hunt and enjoy the scenery. It is considered a Wonder of the Natural World.

GRAND CANYON UNIVERSITY

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/5/5b/GCU-SEAL.png
The College was founded as a nonprofit institution in 1949. Arizona Southern Baptists felt the need to establish a faith-based institution that would allow local Baptists the opportunity to obtain a Bachelor's or Master's degree without going "back east" to one of the Baptist colleges in Texas, Oklahoma or Missouri. In 1949, Grand Canyon University opened to 93 students at its original campus site Prescott, Arizona. Two years of financial drought followed, spelled by occasional showers of generosity and the steady growth in academics and athletic programs. On October 8, 1951, Grand Canyon College relocated to the present campus in Phoenix.

ANTELOPES
http://www.safariinternational.com/userfiles/image/products/Africa/Sudafrica%20Antilopi/Sud_africa_antilopi_32.jpg
The athletic teams of Grand Canyon University are known as the Antelopes (also known as the 'Lopes). Most of the university's athletic teams compete at the NCAA Division II level in the Pacific West Conference. Women's basketball won the 2007 PacWest Conference Championship and a berth in the 2007 NCAA Women's Division II Basketball Tournament.

So anyway, I set the vBookie point spread at 40. I was expecting us to have a much larger margin o' victory in the first game against the University of Edmond (UCO) but alas, I am going to set expectations slightly lower for this upcoming game... and now that I'm reading about this Grand Canyon thing, I am starting to wonder if we'll win by 80.

The game is 7 p.m. Thursday. Tune in on Cox in OKC/Tulsa to channel 3/703. This is not the crappy low-def quality of previous years seen on local channels. They are really stepping up this effort to improve broadcast quality for both men's and women's games... and Billy Tubbs is probably once again on commentary, hehe.

UCO met Morgan Hook last week. Shot 100 percent from 3-point range. They didn't find her very nice or very cute ;)

She actually led our offense most of that first exhibition. I think it's just a fill-in role till a froshie is ready, as I don't think running the point is where she would benefit the team most, but she had a very solid first game... in the midst of us having so many d@mn turnovers, she was 5 to 1 on assist-to-turnovers.

Love, love this kid! 21 points tonight. She lit them up! I know it was Little Sisters of the Poor, but she has lots of spunk.

Just remember when she's Big 12 freshmen of the year, I was the first to say that she was good. There's just something about dog people. :D

And now, your game recap:

First, I want all of you to see what we were up against: The mohawk.
http://i39.tinypic.com/wisdpc.png
Not a fark/photoshop/edit. Billy Tubbs was comparing her (?) to Kenny Stills. And then the other guy quickly steered the commentary back to the game before she overheard him and started crying.

Do NOT be fooled by the final score. Here is what we were up against:
NP to baj after 10 minutes, score about tied: "We're really bad this year, aren't we?"

End of first half: Sherri walks off court silently, death staring anything and everything in front of her. We barely had the lead and had just given up another easy shot to Grand Effing Canyon.

First 10 minutes of second half: We are up by about 20 and start to get freshmen in.

Last 10 minutes of second half: Even the freshmen score billions of points, stealing, rebounding and blocking on defense, resulting in the lopsided 100-50 final.

On all future games, just tune in AFTER the first 10 minutes and try not to look at the scoreboard until 10 minutes into the second half. It was the exact same way in the first exhibition against the University of Edmond.

So, what saved OU's arse from an embarrassing loss (or an embarrassing almost-loss) to Baylor: West (seriously, they're a small private Baptist school out west)? Whitney Hand to the rescue.

The Sooners led the `Lopes 33-25 at halftime before junior co-captain Whitney Hand raised her voice in the locker room and her teammates responded with a 67-point second half outburst.

“I don’t have a voice simply because I am not much of a screamer. We just have to realize that we are in the Big 12, we can’t be up eight points to Grand Canyon in an exhibition game. It is just not acceptable. Nothing against Grand Canyon, I thought they played really hard. I got punched in the face the first possession and I thought, ‘this is going to be a long game.’ They worked hard, they crashed hard, but still, there is a standard. I think everybody responded really well.

"I didn't have to do anything but tell them what to run in the second half because she really took care of everything that was wrong in the first half... She got them focused and ready to compete and I thought our freshmen in the second half were just phenomenal."

So if there's no doubt already, we need to recruit Landry Jones Jr. in 25 years, because he'll be the vocal leader Whitney is, and have the arm Landry does. No more absent-minded staring as Josh coaches him on the sideline/from the box :)

Key game statz:
30 percent: This is why Grand Canyon wasn't ahead at the half. Their. Shooting. Sucked. Thanks, "Lopes!"

21 and 17: The points scored by our two freshmen stars, Sharane Campbell and DaShawn Harden. Remember those names, because you're gonna hear a lot about them this season.

14: We stole the ball 14 times. It really got excessive in the second half as our defense stepped up and swarmed them. This fortunately did not come at the expense of silly fouls, althought DaShawn did have four by the end of the game from getting a bit too ambitious.

11: Forget assist to turnover ratio. Our steal to turnover ratio was 14 to 11 (and if you really care, assist/to was 17 to 11). This is greatly improved over the first game when we gave UCO the ball 26 times.

66.7 percent: Why can't we shoot free throws? Everyone that shot at least one besides DaShawn missed at least once. I've probably said this every season I've done this recappin: Free throws should be free! Our ultimate lowpoint at the stripe was Sharane getting fouled on a three, missing the first two and then having a lane violation on the third

Players of the game: DaShawn and Sharane.
Our freshmen saved our final score from being abysmal and turned it into something more... ideal... for an exhibition opponent. Have at it, Sherri:

“I really thought DaShawn (Harden) looked like a different kid than she did in the first exhibition game. That’s just a little bit of what she’s going to be able to do, finally late in the second half there were a few possessions where she really put the ball on the floor and used her first step. That’s one of her greatest gifts that we didn’t see any in the first exhibition game or up until those last few possessions. As well as she played tonight she didn’t add that facet of her game to really exploit the defense in that regard. I thought Sharane (Campbell) was just fantastic going to the rim. She does an unbelievable job of finishing when she’s getting fouled and that’s a art and one that we have missed. Danielle (Robinson) could do it. Beside from that we haven’t had that in the last few years and it’s nice to see somebody that can finish in traffic and she knocked down a 3 and she did a little bit of everything tonight. I thought both of them just looked a little more comfortable and they got lost in the game which is necessary.”

Next game: Nov. 13 vs Sacramento State. I will have a vBookie event posted soon for it.

What's the story with Kaylon Williams? Why wasn't she suited up? Please don't tell me we have ANOTHER season-ending injury!

I think she was still out with a concussion that she had in practice right before our last exhibition game. Coaches and athletes can't be too careful with that stuff now, so that was likely what sidelined her again. Sooo... a recap, shall I?

117-65

No typo. The largest margin of victory in program history and only four points short of tying our all-time record of 121 in a game. This was our weakest opponent by far so far this year and this was in fact, not an exhibition unlike our first two.

There are very few negatives (unless you vBet on the Sacramento State side after I gave OU a 50-point margin to win by), but here goes:

The dog treat game: Know how to make pets behave during Sooner games? Feed em treats every so often. When we were 10 minutes in and I had already fed them four treats (one every 10 points) and several Sooners were already in double figures, I knew it was time to lay off a little bit.

Billy is fun: Billy Tubbs remarked at one point that we were on pace to score 170, which in fact we were. He even joked with Sherri afterward about "running up the score" because we had scored triple digits in our last two games, after Sherri laughing said "We pulled our starters" which we had. Which leads into...

Turnovers: We had 25 of them. We started off solid in the fouls and turnovers department, hardly having any to begin with (and Sac State put us in bonus within the first nine minutes or so...). It's like the Harlem Globetrotters starting off the game slightly serious, then suddenly go into play-for-the-crowd mode. I am not worried about this number. However, if you vBet you were probably irked because...

Assists, steals and blocks: On a normal night, I would have vPaid off having a positive assist-to-turnover and steal-to-turnover ratio option, but alas, 25 assists to match our 25 turnovers... and "only" 15 steals. I mean, this other team was giving the ball away... then airballing shots away, then passing the ball to nobody. We also had 7 blocks, and it wasn't just by our tall girls, either. Speaking of not being tall...

Rebounds: Whitney Hand was our leading rebounder with 10. Yes, she's technically a guard. Crazy, huh? We rebounded well overall, but again, the competition was not competitive.

Player of the game: Aaryn "Vegas" Ellenberg. On a night where we had seven Sooners score in double figures, Aaryn led the way with 28.

Have something to say, Sherri?

I thought the first half we were extremely difficult to guard. I told them in the locker room, if you play like that and you play together and share the ball like that and change sides of the floor you are going to be hard for anybody to guard. I thought Nicole Griffin establishing herself early was really important. It sort of changes the complexion of everything. These three guys, the trio of guards sitting beside me [Whitney Hand, Morgan Hook and Aaryn Ellenberg], were just about flawless in the first half. They did a lot of really, really good things and did those things together. Second half got a little ragged, obviously turned it over way too much but those guys need that experience and they will get better from it.

Next up is @ New Mexico @ 3 p.m. Saturday. I'll get a vBookie event posted soon.

There is waaaay to much time between games early in the season. Let's preview our next opponent, going on the road to

New Mexico
http://wwp.greenwichmeantime.com/images/usa/new-mexico.jpg
Although New Mexico is the fifth largest state, it is sparsely populated, ranking 36th in population. The oldest European settlement in the western United States is in New Mexico. Around 1609, Spanish colonizers established Santa Fe as the capital of the Spanish province. During the 16th century, Spaniards in Mexico called the land to the north and west of the Rio Grande River New Mexico -- that's where the state gets its name. The Spanish influence in the names of places, food, customs, and holidays can be seen throughout the state. The territory became a province of Mexico in 1821. New Mexico became the 47th state in 1912. As Oklahoma is the 46th state, we already have them beat :)

Lobos
http://maaadddog.files.wordpress.com/2010/02/wolf20-20sheep.jpg
The mascot of the University of New Mexico is the Lobos. My brother would always get a kick outta his PhD place (Nevada) playing New Mexico, because it was the Lobos versus the Wolves... Who are we? The Wolves? Who are we going to beat? The Wolves!

The Pit
http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_HKlgfQxbE-E/S9IIUIRBo3I/AAAAAAAAAX0/6oZk09Qyvhw/s1600/New+Mexico.jpg
This is a road game, remember? We're playing at the famed pit, sans fans (more on that later). The arena seats 17,126 for basketball, has 40 luxury suites, and 350 club seats. The Pit opened in 1966 and was known as the "University Arena" until late 2009 when the school officially named the arena after its nickname. The arena is located on the University's South Campus on University Boulevard and Cesar Chavez in southeast Albuquerque, across the street from University Stadium and Isotopes Park (yes, they named their minor league baseball team after that Simpsons episode).

Duh, losing!
They actually are still drawing around 6k to their stadium, but will that last with the losing? Most recently, they lost at North Texas 63-50, and lost at home to Texas Tech, 69-43. I'd say that our point spread on vBookie is about as safe as they come... except that they flukie upset us at The Pit back during the Paris Twin era.

Advice: Take the OU side of the point spread on vBookie.

Alas, no TV it looks like, so I'll just have to peek at the box score afterward to figure out what happened. :(

PS: A big hearty congrast to Harden being named Big 12 froshie of the week. SS.com has more here. (http://www.soonersports.com/sports/w-baskbl/spec-rel/111511aaa.html)

Sherri Coale also updated her blog on SS.com here. (http://www.soonersports.com/sports/w-baskbl/spec-rel/111411aaa.html) Why should you read it? I'll let you just read the first part:

"Actually, nobody owes you crap." That's what the bumper sticker on the otherwise nondescript Geo Prism in front of me read. I laughed out loud. Then I became enamored with the idea of the person driving the car. I wondered how old he or she was. I wondered if the bumper sticker was on the car when the driver bought it. I wondered if it was even the driver's car or if it was borrowed from a throwback hippie aunt. I wondered if the driver participated in picket lines or sat 'in' at the capitol, or if he was just an ordinary middle age parent of two who simply wanted to voice reason to a messed up world.

Mostly I just wanted to pull up beside the guy and say I agree.

It goes on to talk about Aaron Rodgers, Brett Favre and the NBA lockout. Can't-miss blog. READ!

He definitely sounds more relaxed, like he's less worried about the women screwing up then the men (but I think that's something fans of both teams can totally relate to). It almost sounds like he's talking with a smile on his face. :)

Apologies in advance to vBettors that listened to me when I said to take the OU side of the 25-point spread. Every reason in the world suggested that we should beat this team by more... except precedent. We have struggled (and lost) to New Mexico before. Certain teams (like ISU during the early aughts) have Sherri's number and New Mexico seems to be one of those teams.

Just some fun stats to throw out:

Joanna McTHREEland: She was 2 for 2 from behind the arch.

Single double digit: Only one Sooner, Aaryn "Vegas" Ellenberg, had double digit scoring, with 14.

Thievery at its finest: We had more steals than assists. We had more steals than turnovers. We are a ball thief team this year.

Shooting death: If and when we inevitably lose because we're not damn UConn, our shooting will likely be the culprit. We shot 18 percent from 3 (which would have been worse without McFarland's 2 for 2) and 32 percent overall. Free throws hardly helped. We only shot 11 of em (No ref shenanigans --- New Mex only shot 10) and only made 8 of em.

Player of the game: Joanna McFarland.
Based on the stat lines alone since they didn't televise this game, there's a lot to love from our team's honor roll genius scientist chick. Three steals, eight points, only two turnovers and when rebounding seemed to be at a premium, she led our team with a lucky 13.

Courtesy of the New Mexico site, a Sherri Coale quote:

We're a very good shooting team. In practice, in our two exhibitions and in our opener we shot the ball extremely well, especially behind the arc. I've been sort of subtly trying to prepare them for the day that the ball won't go in and today was one of those days. We're a young bunch and it wasn't very pretty but we continued to pull together and try to get the high percentage shot. To shoot that miserably and still get the win, I think says something about your team.

This week, we travel to something called the "Vanderbilt Thanksgiving Tournament" in Nashville. with our first game at 4 p.m. Nov. 25. I think this is one of those win-or-leave dealios, so assuming we win, we'll play Nov. 26. Neither game is televised and I'll be outta town anyways, so I'll be back after the holiday for recappin' fun.

Good call on the pick of McFarland as the Player of the Game. I was at the game, and she was one of the few who seemed to show up mentally. Yesterday, OU was more lucky than good, but I'll take it. It does get frustrating to see a team that has NO ONE who could start for your team tossing in three's like there's no tomorrow and get all the lucky bounces.

BTW, the close games Sherri's had with UNM are just a recent thing. The Paris-era teams ripped them three times, and they were better back then (and honestly, so was OU). Sherri has never lost to UNM. And it also means I can go to work on UNM's campus tomorrow and ONLY have to hang my head in shame over the football team.

Losing is tough to deal with, isn't it, SF.com-posters-who-are-usually-at-the-football-forum? :D

Fortunately, SS.com has this posted prominently on its site a day after a weekend filled with basketball losses:

http://grfx.cstv.com/photos/schools/okla/sports/genrel/auto_bsi_player/7211767.jpeg

Oh boy, spend money on Sooner crap!

And now... onto basketball. First, the first tourney game out in Nash-ville:

76-45

Our rebounding stank, but Morgan "Le Tre" and "Vegas" Ellenberg both got 22 points, so it was quite a blowout. The team once again logged more steals than assists, more steals than turnovers... more steals than most every other stat :)

And now, the stinker from Saturday:

66-78

After only trailed by two at half, Vandy used its home court to its full advantage and some chicks named Foggie and Lister (???) apparently pwn3d us. Argh.

But... isn't there usually a few reasons for losing hidden in the stat sheet? Let's see:

Costly throws: Not, free throws, COSTLY throws. When you make only half of them, you are just asking to be hack-a-Shaq'd. We were 10 for 20.

Invisible freshmen, and Nicole: Were they injured, or did they just not play well enough to play everyone? DeShawn Harden had 22 minutes, but only managed 2 points in that time (with 5 TO's and 5 assists). Sharane Campbell finished with 2 points in 8 minutes (and 2 fouls). Kaylon Williams had 2 points in 7 minutes. Nicole Griffin had 0 points (and a rebound) in 7 minutes. Wow. :(

Rebounds, not frees: The big girls that logged more time and stats, Cerina and McFarland, each had 10 rebounds. That's good! They also combined for 2 for 9 from the line. That's bad. They did combine for 19 points also... but there's your free throw culprit right there.

Not steals, not assists, TURNOVERS: Usually this fan is giggling about the fact that we steal the ball repeatedly instead of getting assists or turnovers... well, this game was more in line with what we've grown accustomed to over the years: HIGH turnovers (24), so-so assists (16) and average steals (7). I guess Santa told the team that it was better to give (the ball to the other team) than to receive (the ball from a teammate or an opponent).

Since we aren't in action again till Dec. 4, let's see if Sherri had anything to say on the Internets anywhere... googling Sherri to find quotes and... wtf?!

Seriously?! You boys are googling Sherri Coale to find out more about her husband, if she's divorced and... COUGARIFFIC?!?! You boys all suck and should feel ashamed.

For the record, Sherri DOES have a husband (and two kids), she is NOT divorced and... COUGARIFFIC?! I will have to find a way to incorporate that word into future entries just to get it to pop up in google

Sooo... you boys do not deserve this, but here is your Sherri quote anyway:

I like this bunch, I like them a lot, I like how they work, I think they'll grow and we'll get better and better... It's going to be a long pre-conference period getting in the position to compete and do the things we want to do.

I just got done watching tOSU kick the crap outta Duke, so now is as good a time as ever to preview our team's next opponent, THE Ohio State University.

As a sidenote, if you're a student, they are having a very cool promo this year involving attendance at this game and six other home games. Check it out here. (http://www.soonersports.com/sports/w-baskbl/spec-rel/112911aaa.html) LOL at the pic accompanying that SS.com release:

http://grfx.cstv.com/photos/schools/okla/sports/w-baskbl/auto_action/7215506.jpeg

Also of note, the Naismath Award (basically the Heisman of college basketball that Blake Griffin won a few years ago) named two of our girls to the watch list (there's 51 currently): Whitney and Vegas. More info here. (http://www.soonersports.com/sports/w-baskbl/spec-rel/113011aab.html)

Now... Ohio State! We had a home and home with them setup apparently, because after Vegas (or was it Morgan Le Tre?) went off on them in Columbus last year, they are coming to Norman this Sunday afternoon.

After dropping to Vandy, we slid to No. 18 in the most recent AP poll, put us right behind undefeated... Ohio State. Over on the coaches poll, we are tied at No. 18 with... Ohio State.

Thus, this game es mas importante! Speaking of rankings, here's how the Big 12 looks currently:
1. Stupid Baylor!
4. Stupid Texas A&M!
18. OU!
19/25: Tech
21/22: Texas
Receiving votes: Iowa State and... KANSAS?????

KU usually sucks on the womens' side of this college game, so I am kind of surprised at that. No pity votes for OSU.

tOSU has already beaten a ranked foe so far this season, beating No. 23 LSU 77-68. Our sketchy starts against so-so opponents led me to set the point spread on vBookie as even on this, not just cuz we're ranked so closely, but also because we are very hit or miss (from the 3-point-line, for free throws, for everything). A cold shooting streak dooms a team as good at shooting as us. Turnover happiness combined with a lack of steals will also doom this team.

vBookie advice: Believe in the Sooners and take the OU side. Do NOT take the free throw vBet or the 100-point vBet.

Further, anything you don't spend on other vBookie events, sink into the OU football team as they face their toughest challenge of the season @ Stillwater this Saturday. ALL IN FOR OU!

Sorry Baylor, you're only allowed to beat us in one sport per year. You've already wasted your single victory on football.

Why else could our hapless men's team beat you in the Big 12 tourney last year? Because Baylor spent its OU victory sport on womens basketball. Thus, OU football and mens basketball were going to beat you at least once each... and we saved it for the most crushing moment... admittedly, your football team just did the same to ours, so fair play turnabout yadda yadda.

I used a lot of curse words as I watch the second half slip away in the final minutes :(

69-63

After being down by 8 at half and watching tOSU's lead grow to 10 or so a few times, we pulled within 1 within a few minutes, only to have some costly Vegas turnovers on the other end. Will we finally take the lead? NO! They will just make their margin wider and suddenly, what was once three or four minutes left in the game was less than a minute and we're pretty much outta time :(

You should have seen Sherri in a timeout in the closing minute after those Vegas turnovers. It was like a teacher scolding her class of unruly students after teacher left the classroom a few minutes, hehe. Shouting, finger pointing, you name it.

Because so many of you lost so much vCash to the OSU football game, I have made the payout options for the OU-Fresno State game this Thursday ( 9 p.m. tipoff) extremely generous if we have some standout performances. But, because I'm still trying to recap tOSU, here's the standout performances from yesterday's loss:

Joanna is the rebound queen: 16 of em. Also led the team in steals with 5.

They both still score a lot: Our freshmen studs who are now sophomores still seem to be hitting shots on the same nights this season too. Aaryn Vegas Ellenberg and Morgan Le Tre Hook both led the team in scoring with 14 each.

And now, the lowlights:

3 and free shooting: We only shot 6 free throws the entire game (while tOSU shot 14, although some of that was last-minute stop-the-clock fouling). We shot 6 for 18 from distance and Whitney Hand, bless her, went 1 for 6 on the night. Ouch.

All shooting, actually: We were also 42 percent from everywhere, which included a lot of easy lay-up like crap from our tall girls that bonked out. Quite annoying.

Terribad turnovers: 14 of them, compared with 12 total assists and 8 total steals.

I felt like this was a game we could have won if only we managed the final minutes better. Ah well. What does Sherri have to say?

We are a young team and I thought we made some progress today. We had it to a one-possession game and had, I think, four different attempts at it. We were down one but we just weren’t able to get over the hump. Some untimely turnovers, though I thought our sureness with the basketball was better than it has been, just they came at some bad times. We didn’t shoot it the way I think this team will shoot it and the way we expect to shoot it. We missed a little of our mojo that comes from that. But, I thought we did fight. This is why we play teams like this when you’re really young, so you can grow up and figure some things out. We are doing that slowly but surely so this schedule is going prepare us for our Big 12 play.

Once again, @ Fresno State 9 p.m. Thursday. vBet if you are in need of vCash on the vBookie.

Despite the loss, I came away from this game feeling a little more encouraged and confident. I could see that the team had improved considerably from the previous two home games.

Unfortunately tOSU hit their first 9 shots and the OU women had to start guarding the baseline to get back in it.

It seemed to me that Coach Coale was using taller combination of players on the floor at the same time. At times it seemed that Joanna McFarland was playing more on the primeter as a guard instead of a forward. She still got her rebounds. And, I am liking it whenever they could get the ball inside to Nicole Griffin for the high percentage shots. I think she will just get better and better.

I am definitely looking forward to the TCU game.

Boy, what happened last night against Fresno St?

http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_zLeMcgeaW18/SSe_UkjEoFI/AAAAAAAAB9I/mq5o153WS18/s320/RollingHeads.jpg

It is a good thing that this game wasn't televised, or I would have stayed up for it, then gone to sleep angry. Fortunately, I went to sleep happy that the men beat ORU and from the brief moments I saw the OU game's score on the bottom ESPN ticker, it seemed within reach for us to beat Fresno.

Well, ****.

66-69

Bill Self apparently went ballistic over KU having 22 turnovers. I mused that having that many was a typical night for the OU women... and we had a typical night (only 21 actually). Having not watched the game, but having watched so many, I can just picture what happened seeing the box score, so bear with me as heads roll over the fact that OU is now a three-loss team. This might be the one that sends them dangerously close to not being in the top 25 anymore.

Why aren't our tallest players rebounding more: Whitney Hand (8 rebounds) is technically a guard. Joanna McFarland (10 rebounds) is technically a forward. Our TECHNICALLY-A-CENTER players that are crazy-tall, Nicole Griffin and Jelina Cerina, 6 and 3 rebounds, respectively. Oh wait... DISrespecively. I've been patient, I've been a good little badger, but enough is enough. If you hands are inches away from the rim when you arms are fully extended, odds are VERY good that you should be rebounding better than shorter chicks (Full disclosure: I'm incredibly short). Please use the height that God gave you to your full advantage. It will benefit the team.

What do you call uncontested, untimed attempts at points: What's the term? Oh yeah... FREE throws. I don't care how wildly the fat man behind the basket is waving the skinny balloon. MAKE YOUR DARN FREE THROWS, GIRLS. There is NO excuse for scholarship, elite program athletes to go 60 percent from the line. And while we're at it, why were you only at the line 10 times last night? You not only need to make them once you're there, you need to get there more often!

Dying by the 3: It is really bad it be a one-dimensional team that relies on a single type of shot to score. Thus, when you see Morgan Hook go 0 for 5 from three, Whitney Hand go 0 for 4 from three, and Aaryn go 8 for 16 from three (seriously? you took 16 of those shots? holy cow), you wonder if they're using the three-ball too much as a crutch. Well, I'm not wondering, I know they are because that is what they do every game. And this gets back to the rebounding woes of our centers... threes are low percentage shots. If we're gonna rely on them, we are gonna rely on rebounding to get those inevitable missed threes.

Where are the stealing Sooners that I've grown to love: We were absolute ball thieves in our first games to the point that steals would outnumber assists, and even turnovers. We had 3 last night. Coupled with the fact that we had 21 turnovers, we were doomed, even if the final score only said that we lost by 3.

We are now a three-loss team, and not just any three-loss team, a 3-3 team. Having three losses is OK when you're deep into the season and you're losing to UConn or whatever in the regular season, but right now, this third loss puts us at .500.

Thus, it's time for tough love. This is the making or breaking point of the season, where the girls decide that they are going to start doing their jobs and win, or continue failing and lose. I fully expect Sherri to have much worse words that I do for her team, because this is not what anyone expected or wanted out of a team that returned some studly freshmen, a star captain in Whitney Hand, and some very rare and hot commodity in women's basketball tall centers.

SS.com was probably too bummed over the THIRD loss to post any postgame quotes, so I'll lift this one from the Fresno paper. Sherri?

They were tougher than we were and imposed their will on us... It's got to matter more to us now. This team is playing pretty entitled.

Yeah, I was less than impressed this time and we won!

The team just seemed to lack focus and leadership.

Ellenburg was hoisting up 3's (2-9) even if none of her team mates were anywhere near the basket to get the rebound. The inside game was not there with Griffin as center with the very few inside passes being stolen. Griffin just scored 2 points.

I loved seeing Kay-Kay Williams play, as well as the other freshmen Campbell and Harden. Campbell went 6-6 for FGs and there were some pretty drives to the basket.

I bout went crazy when Joanna McFarland hit two early 3's. I'm liking her expanded role. You go girl!

It really helps when your opponent only makes seven shots each half.

72-50

However, since we're still determined to hit as many 3's as possible (as was Milkwaukee, who airballed, boinked and just looked embarrassing shooting their 3s), we didn't get as many points as we should have. We also didn't shoot at as many foul shots as I would have liked and committed more turnovers than I would have wanted. But, with a win comes many positives:

Joanna McFarland: Was our leading three-point shooter, going 2 for 3. Overall, the team shot 8 for 24 from behind the arch, so it was pretty funny seeing our rebounding queen (not today, but overall) get in on the three-point action.

Whitney Hand: Had a double-double, getting 17 points and 10 boards. She also had a 6-6 assist-to-turnover ratio and 5 for 5 for free throws, so I'll completely ignore the fact that she went 2 for 6 for her threes.

Kaylon "Kay Kay" Williams: You know that freshman that I said would make an immediate impact? What did I say again...

A top rated prospect in the country, but from a short distance away in Midwest City, this froshie power forward might provide some relief to Joanna McFarland and Nicole Griffin in grabbing rebounds. Expected contribution? Immediately!

After recovering from a early season practice concussion, "Kay Kay" is back, providing the rebounding and post play help that we've sorely been missing with her taller teammates. Sherri said she was outta shape when talking about her in the postgame, but if that is her "out of shape" shape, then I can't wait to see what Kay-Kay plays like when she's back "in shape." I could see her starting before long, because unlike some others that I've seen this year, when she boxes out on offense or defense for a rebound and the ball comes right to her, the ball does not bounce off her fingertips, but she actually grabs it and passes it out! It's like a rebound, or something!

Twin freshmen awesomeness: Sharane Campbell and DaShawn Harden continue to impress, combining for 19 points and 4 rebounds in their 23 and 17 minutes, respectively. Sherri mentioned in postgame also that with hardly any upper classmen that we would have to have our younger players out there at all times, so at least they are taking care of business and not just learning on the job!

Player of the game: Whitney Hand. Because of what I said above.

And now a Sherri Coale quote!

I am very glad to see that. It is just such a process we all have to take deep breaths and be patient and bring these guys along. Unfortunately our schedule has not allowed us to bring them along in a really comfortable pace. They are just kind of just hanging on, their heads are spinning. I thought this afternoon was a good opportunity for all three Kay Kay [Kaylon Williams], Sharane [Campbell] and DaShawn [Harden] to just sort of settle in and allow themselves an opportunity to play without the pressure of the outcome of the game hinging on every single possession. It was good to see them just relax and get involved.

As Billy Tubbs eluded to in his table request for Sherri, we head to Vegas for a tournament. Our next game is 4:30 p.m. Sunday versus Ohio, but it isn't televised, so I'll probably just rant on how many turnovers, missed 3s we have and free throws we don't have.

For the first time since badger was still in college... the OU womens team is no longer in the AP top 25. :(

A seven-season streak ended this week, with OU getting just 8 votes in the AP poll following its third loss of the season (at Fresno State on Thursday), which would put us at 28th. :(

Is Sherry ever going to have a team that doesn't turn the ball over 20 times a game? I just don't get our inability to take care of the ball year after year.

I started following the team in fall 2001. In a nutshell, they needed musicians to play rah rahs and I was randomly assigned to the womens basketball team to play rah rahs.

I don't remember many turnovers that first, Final Four (lost in championship game to UConn) season. Having three first-round draft picks (including the late Rosalyn Ross, star guard LaNeisha Caufield and SF.com favorite Stacey Dales) probably helped with that.

I think that Stacey was our primary handle-the-ball handler of all things offense. Then... a change to speedier, speed speed speed guards it seemed led to more turnovers.

There was the Venezuelan wonder Maria V...um... V-something. It was pronounced "Vee-sha-rell." She was faster than everyone around her and that probably led to some turnovers.

We also had Dionna Jackson, who like Danielle Robinson, was very fast and could drive into the lane while you blink. Turnovers abound for both of them.

We had a brief time with Oklahoma native (I had to google "makeup stealing" to remember her name) Jenna Plumley that I was once a big fan of till the theft and subsequent transfer. She was probably the most turnover prone of them all, being so quick.

Do we slow ourselves down to minimize turnovers, or wear opponents down to needing oxygen masks by the second half and continue winning? I like winning, so if it means I have to also put up with turnovers, so be it.

 The other problems this year are really starting to make the turnovers stick out, however.

As sad as it was to go from 3-0 to 3-3 (yes, our 3 losses were consecutive), it was good to end it with a solid win at home... well, solid-ish, at least. We should have put up more than 72 on em. But eff it, let's look at our weekend tourney in Fabulous Las Vegas, Nevada:

Sunday versus Ohio: A team with a losing record that has nobody over 6 feet tall starting. Should be a victory and if it isn't, kill me now.

Monday versus Syracuse: They are 7-3 overall, but none of their wins are over anyone significant and their losses look like they are against questionable opponents. Aside from tOSU, however, you could say the same about us. They also look to be a turnover prone team, so could be a chance for us to build up our stealage stats. Definitely that that vBookie bet!

Tuesday versus Xavier: Unlike their male, ranked counterparts, the female version of Xavier is a losing team at 3-5. However, I wouldn't be surprised to see Big X give OU a bit of a competition, as they only lost to Satanford by 16. I am looking at XU's recap on their own site and thinking... is this the best they can say about their own team, even in a loss? 6 free throws... 3 blocks... ummm... 'kay.

Long post short, I want to be 3-0 in this tourney shindig, I want to hear about NO off-court crap despite them being in Sin City, I want to have NO injuries and absolutely MINIMAL bad stats!

I want to see improvement, I want to see career days, I want to see a team motivated to prove that it belongs back in the AP Top 25 that it was dropped out of this past week.

This game appeared to never be close.

89-57

There is still cause for worry, even with signs of improvement, so since there's three back-to-back-to-back games, let's make this a quickie today, shall we?

Rebounding: I really don't think I'm asking too much here. There were so many missed shots on both sides of the ball that there should have been tons of rebounding opportunities for our team. Am I nitpicking here? No, it's continually a problem, win or lose.

Free throws: So they finally found their shot, huh? 13 for 14 is excellent and I want it to continue. It was pretty sh!tty to see us shooting 3's almost as well as frees (unless we're shooting 3's at 93 percent also, hehe).

Three pointers: 26 percent shooting from three means find a new shot. I know, I know --- we had 89 points, what else should I ask for...

Turnovers: 16 is acceptable, but undesirable. I can live with it, especially with such a large margin of victory.

Player of the game: Sharane Campbell. 19 points means I will overlook the four turnovers... for now. :)

Next game: Vegas tourney vs Syracuse at 4:30 p.m. today Oklahoma time. Not televised, so another box score recap is in store.

I admit to my recent slacking off. Them having a non-televised tourney in Vegas, followed up by me thinking their TCU game was tonight and not last night (WHHYYYYYYYYYYYY did I watch Texas' crappy Holiday Bowl instead of my beloved Sooner womens team? WHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHYYYYYY?!??!) so from here on out, more updates, more often! :D

82-54

I've always liked the color purple, so if I had to guess, that is why people choose to go to TCU. It's not the Pokemon-looking mascot, it's not to be in the Dallas area, it's not because you might actually go to a Rose Bowl once every 100 years... it's purple.

That's all I've got on TCU. They beat us last year at their house, so eff em this year in Norman :D Let's skip right to the key stats of the game:

Terribad turnovers: 26 of them is a lot. That's like more cents than a quarter. That's more minutes than a half of college basketball. That's more... well, it's more than desirable. Darn you turnovers. Darn them to heck.

Why I REALLY regret missing the game: From the box score --- "Two technicals charged consecutively to TCU head coach Jeff Mittie resulting in ejection, 4:58 in the first half." Holy sh!t. In all of my years of watching OU womens basketball, I have never seen our coach or the opposing coach sent out. I've seen Sherri get technicals (and it's epically wonderful each time, because the ref SOOOOO deserves to get their head rung by that point), but never have I seen it escalate to that point. I am gonna have to try to catch a replay now... and if it's awesome, I will try to get a video of it on Youtube :D

24 points: Scored by Aaryn "Vegas" Ellenberg. Probably as a "thank you" to the team for having a tourney in her hometown :)

9 rebounds: By Nicole Griffin. Perhaps there is hope for our true center to get the key stat a true center usually has more than her teammates. Our usual rebounding queen, JMc, had 7.

Shooting woes: 76 percent from the line is OK if you're in a junior high free throw contest, but in college ball, that's kind of unreliable. 40 percent from three point range is good, but largely contributed to our overall shooting percentage, 47.5. In a nutshell, when we take free throws, we need to make them. When we take threes, that's cool, but don't completely ignore your two-point options.

Player of the game: Sharane Campbell. I will ignore the fact that she had 5 turnovers and zoom right in on a key stat: 7 for 8 for free throws, helping her get 17 points. And she's only a freshman. I continue to see greatness out of our n00bs. That is awesome.

And now, Sherri Coale:

Those guys need to be in situations like this, where they can be out there and learn and grow without the game being on the line. It is very important for those to have those types of minutes before we head into Big 12 play. I thought (Sharane) Campbell did some great things. Where she has improved is defensively. Her positioning and what she is seeing is so much better than it was eight or 10 days ago. (DaShawn) Harden has a lot of ‘wow’ in her game. She also turned the ball over eight times and gets frustrated easily, those are things that you have to play through as a true freshmen. Can she score? You bet. It is important to get those guys minutes because we are going to need them in Big 12 play.

And now... to make you all regret missing the game as much as I did...

I think they were more caught up with the fact that she made a 3 with one second on the (shot) clock. They didn’t even really know (about the technical fouls). I was trying to tell them and calm them down. I was trying to tell Whitney that she needed to go shoot free throws. They were like,’ why, what’s going on’? I think that play is what ignited us much more than the technical fouls did.

From the Norman Transcript (http://normantranscript.com/sports/x58542376/Frogs-lose-coach-game-OU-women-make-it-five-in-a-row-with-a-blowout-of-TCU):

TCU women’s basketball coach Jeff Mittie must be one heck of a roundball mind. Anyway, the Horned Frogs were lost without him Wednesday night at Lloyd Noble Center.

It all happened 5:03 before the half.

TCU trailed by five points. Sooner point guard Morgan Hook hit a shot and it was eight. Mittie picked up two technical fouls and was ejected. OU’s Whtney Hand received and made four free throws and it was a 12-point game.

The sequence breathed life into the Sooners, who made it a 21-point advantage by the half and 82-54 by game’s end.

If I hear of any replay, I'll let you all know.

I was at the game and I thought that OU had a little home cooking on the shot clock. In my opinion, the TCU coach was right to complain. OU had one second on the shot clock when the first inbounds pass inside to Griffin (?) was tipped away. A second inbounds pass was to Hook and she made the 3. It seemed to me to be longer than just one second. Still, I'm not complaining about the 7-point play.

If any OKC or Tulsa people are Cox subscribers, go to the Freezone thing and you can watch replays of Sooner games, including mens and womens basketball and football too. This includes the TCU game. I watched the ejection moment after last night's Insight victory and trophy presentation :D

So, without further ado, your moment of Billy:

"You actually have to leave the building... it's kind of cold out there!"

I was fast forwarding (Cox allows you to do this on Sooner games so no worries about crappy ads repeatedly as usual on SSN games) up till about 5 minutes left in the first half and basically, a double-digit lead is disappearing. What was once 12 was 10, then 9, then 7, then 5... and then I knew it had to be the moment. TCU had the momentum, we had the ball... and we are letting the shot clock run out on us.

Failed to shoot with 1 second to go on the shot clock, the ball goes outta bounds... we have a timeout.

After the timeout, the ball game gets knocked out... but no time goes off the shot clock. The TCU coach protests, so the refs tell him to call down, and he does. He probably didn't expect us to do anything... but we did.

Whitney Hand, inbounding from the baseline, finds Morgan Hook at the corner of the three-point line, wide open. While seemed to take longer than a second to get a shot off, the refs count the bucket. Sooners ahead by 8, so the TCU coach, who is once again protesting, calls for a timeout (tapping his shoulder).

He is going berserko, but the cameras cut to our bench. Suddenly, there's an angry-sounding whistle from the refs (there's a distinction, yknow?) and a few girls on our bench cheer, but we are all huddling by this point.

A few moments later, the camera cuts to a still-irate TCU coach who is still yelling at the refs. Billy Tubbs informs us that the TCU coach just picked up his second technical.

He doesn't leave right away, I'm thinking he thinks he only got one. But, the refs ensure him he is out. He says something to one of the refs as he walks past the scorer's table with his arm around the ref's shoulder, then leaves silently as the crowd applauds. Sherri and bench do not say or do anything as he walks by.

Whitney Hand proceeds to do what all of us wish Landry Jones could do: Be consistent. And accurate. Barely looking at the rim, she sinks four free throws in a row, with just brief pauses between for crowd applause and to get the ball back.

And like that, OU's lead goes from 5 to 12.

And TCU cannot recover.

It has been awhile since I've done a "just for fun" entry, so with the new year and all, let's recap how our non-conference schedule went. Like our male counterparts (way to be 10-2, guys! Great start!), the women also start their conference season this week, and our opponent is Iowa State this 7 p.m. Wednesday at home. It will be televised, so be sure to tune in for your mandatory Billy Tubbs listening :D

Winning five straight

How does a team win five straight? Alas, it has to start and end with a loss, and so far, the women's team has had two of these five-game winning streaks so far this year, sandwiching a three-game losing streak. Before you all scratch your head and say "We only have 8 wins," I am including our two exhibition games.

I credit our winning and losing streaks to shooting, because when we score, we tend to win, and if we don't score as much, we tend to lose. You might think this is a "duh" thing, but remember all those low scoring Kelvin teams that would go tourney dancing every year? This Sherri team needs to score to win.

Key stat: When we score 80 or more, we are 6-0. When we score less than 80, we are 4-3 (including exhibition games).

Terribad turnovers

How terribad are turnovers? Quite. Let us look at our three losses:
OU/Vandy turnovers: 24 (us), 16 (them)
OU/tOSU turnovers 14 (us), 14 (them)
OU/Fresno turnovers: 21 (us), 9 (them)

With the exception of Ohio State, the turnover bug has been quite a glaring problem, especially when you compare it with turnovers by the opponent. We can usually make up for the turnover plague (it really is a plague, it has always been a Sherri team issue for as long as I can remember) by shooting better, but again, we tend to not shoot as well in losses.

Key stat: We only had 9 turnovers in a win at New Mexico, forced Liberty to turn it over 37 times in another road win, only had 10 in a win Xavier and have only had more turnovers than our opponent twice in victories so far this season (not including exhibition).

Super Sophomores
Quite often across every sport, you hear of a "sophomore slump," when standout freshmen suddenly aren't standouts anymore, for whatever reason --- opponents take them more seriously, injury issues, getting caught up in the college atmosphere, etc. However, I am happy to report that this does not appear to be the case with our two standout freshmen-turned sophomores, Aaryn "Vegas" Ellenberg and Morgon "Le Tre" Hook (on a sidenote, I bet that nickname never caught on and this is only place you see it, hehe). Vegas leads the team in points and steals. Le Tre leads the team in three-point percentage (44 percent!) and has a great assist-to-turnover ration (49 to 26). About all they don't do is rebound... and they're guards, so I will cut them some slack :)

Key stat: Not including exhibition games, Sophomores Ellenberg (18.1 ppg) and Hook (13.4 ppg) are the team's top two leading scorers.

Last captain standing
Immediately before the season, the lone senior Jasmine Hartman went down with an season-ending injury. Then, Lyndsey Cloman took a nasty spill in an exhibition game, ending her season. Whitney Hand, no stranger to injuries, is our last captain left that can play. But, she has made the most of it, leading the team in two important categories that our team has struggled with this year: assists and free throw percentage. She is also second in rebounding (behind Joanna McFarland) and third in scoring (behind our sophomore stars). It probably helps that she's tied for the lead in minutes per game (with Vegas) but she is the leader everyone needs in a season as WTF as this.

Key stat: Once known for three-point shooting, Whitney is actually only fourth-best on the team right now, despite a respectable 29.8 percent average.

Joanna McFarland
My player of the non-conference season thus far is the most pleasant surprise, the one I used to nickname "Four Foul McFarland" (becuase she used to collect four fouls per game her freshman year before Sherri would bench her the rest of the game, heh. She is doing just about everything, even the occasional 3-pointer (shooting 43.8 percent, second behind Hook). She leads the team in rebounding, has a positive assist-to-turnover ratio just barely (15 to 14) and is the team's fourth-leading scorer (7.8 ppg). I was kind of expecting her to be relegated to the bench in favor of her taller teammates Nicole and perhaps Jelina also, but instead, she's come out firing on all cylinders and other cliches for suddenly being awesome. I just hope she can continue. Keep it up!

Key stat: McFarland leads the team in fouls (30), but has never fouled out of a game so far this season.

Once again, next game is our conference season opener, 7 p.m. Wednesday at LNC versus Sherri's former nemesis, Iowa State. Remember when they used to always beat her? Lol.

I am a big fan of this team, but as someone who missed the Billy Tubbs coaching era at OU, I am quickly also becoming a fan of Billy because of his commentary :D

Today's MOMENT OF BILLY, when they were showing halftime highlights... of kindergarteners in bright green and gray t-shirts running around up and down the court playing basketball, sometimes losing the ball while trying to dribble, always missing shots, but having tons of fun:

I had a few teams like that my first two years!

Oh Billy :)

80-51

Don't be fooled by the final score --- Iowa State was fighting hard the entire way to the point that our final two players didn't even get to see the court (Sorry, Zander vBettors). Midway through the first half, we were trailing by 7. Then, after the swarming defense that our men's team has become known for in its non-conference play, the good guys caused Iowa State to violate the shot clock, turn over the ball, or put up the absolute worst shots that you possibly could (lots of air balling). The end result? A nearly 30-point win.

Why did you yank Joanna, Sherri: 19 points, not 20. 9 rebounds, not 10. Couldn't you just give her a few more seconds to hit either milestone? McFarland was definitely taking a lot of Cyclone abuse, though, so perhaps it was a mercy benching. They were elbowing, pushing, everything... and she kept getting up with a smile :)

Whitney Hand does everything: Sure, she didn't hit threes, but she hit the most free throws, had the most assists, was only one rebound behind Joanna and even scored in double digits.

Not terribad on turnovers: Only 13, compared to Iowa State's 17... and their turnovers don't include all of those GAWD awful shots they took. Having a positive assist (16) to turnover ratio is a good night.

Froshie phenom: When Morgan Hook into foul trouble, DeShawn Harden came in and added 14 points and 5 boards of her own in just 23 minutes.

Something I still don't understand: We are constantly rotating our tall girls in and out down in the post position, yet still, bless their Sooner hearts, Jelina Cerina and Nicole Griffin combined for 5 points, 5 boards and 5 fouls. They were taking shots, yes... but they were missing shots, frequently (combined 2 for 8). Most unfortunately, being in the middle of traffic didn't result in getting to the line often, either --- Jelina went 1 for 2, Nicole had no free throws attempted. I was just spoiled by the Paris twins and Abi Olajuwon, wasn't I?

Player of the Game: Without question, Joanna Formerly Four Foul McFarland is your player of the game. Why? Ask Sherri:

“Joanna was fantastic from the opening tip in every phase of the game, from rebounding to scoring from every spot on the floor. The thing that I am most proud of her is her ability to move on to the next play now. She is so hard on herself that sometimes she is unable to do that. She is able to do that now, though, whether it be a missed block out here or a layup missed. She is a great shooter. This is a perfect example for young players everywhere. Jo got in the gym this summer and earned the right to believe that every time she shoots it is going to go in. That’s what you do.”

In other words, Joanna did a lot of work in the offseason... and it wasn't just on her 4.0 GPA in Biochemistry. She is gonna be the first female president someday... and smile when her opponents try to knock her down.

Next game: 2 p.m. Sunday at Texas A&M, televised on FSN.

Badger, would you mind if I mentioned here how I really like scheduling for college women's basketball? They're doing it right. They are filling up their sports arenas and giving fans a great game.

My mom and I watch the #2 UCONN- #3 Notre Dame game this afternoon. Both have only one loss to #1 Baylor in Waco. Since visiting UCONN lost in OT, I don't expect the rankings will change must except for #2 and #3 to possibly switch places. So, the top 3 teams in the country have already all played each other.

The coach of UCONN, Geno Auriemma, got a standing ovation from a sell-out crowd at the Ferrell Center before the Baylor-UCONN game on Dec 18. I believe that was recognition for what he has done for the sport of women's basketball.

Gotta love this aggressive scheduling and I can't wait for OU to get back in there and mix it up with the best. We don't miss any home OU games. But for the Baylor game on Jan 26, I will be wearing my green and gold (and I may have to walk back to Madill).

I don't mind at all :)

I agree that it's good for the sport to see the top teams go up against each other before March. It's not something every team would survive, hence some going the SEC football non-conference cupcake route, but for those that do, it really showcases how far the womens game has come.

On a sidenote, we are gonna be taking on the Lady Aggies at 2 p.m. today. The game is broadcast by Fox Sports so we might not have Billy on commentary this time. Ah well, I'm sure this season will still have plenty of Billy to quote :D

I am still a bit miffed with how yesterday's game turned out, so here is a picture of OU gymnast Brie Olsen:

Brie Olsen... one more pic:
http://grfx.cstv.com/photos/schools/okla/sports/w-gym/auto_headshot/6936138.jpeg
...is a 5-foot 2-inch junior from Minnesota. So, she's like me except I'm from Wisconsin, not from Minnesota. We are both short and blond, we are both from the north and we both love gymnastics!

But unlike her, I could not do a head stand to save my life. I have terrible balance. :D

I mention Brie today since that pic is curprominently displayed on SS.com after her 9.85 floor exercise helped OU sweep the events at Kentucky's Excite Night meet. She also exceled (read: Was the BEST) on Vault (9.9) and Bars (9.85)

OK, now back to basketball:

58-75

****. ****. ****. Fill in the four-letter words. It's a fun little game, unlike the game yesterday, which was not fun or little. It was our ticket back into the top 25 and we blew it. I could blame the refs again, but you can only blame them for so long before you would how in the eff you got yourself in a position to rely on fair, unbiased officiating when officiating is hardly ever fair and unbiased.

Goodbye, winning streak. Let me recap this as best as I can without resorting to more four-letter words:

The return of Four-Foul McFarland: Since FSN tuned into our game late (some C-USA game was competitive... but who gives a **** about Memphis and UTEP? Sorry...sorry... just remembered that I was trying to minimize the curse words here) so you would have had no idea that Joanna started, because she was already on the bench with two fouls. At halftime I took the dogs for a walk and came back late... only to see Joanna on the bench again, so I figured she just wasn't playing. As it turned out, she was out of both halves quickly after picking up FOUR fouls. The end result was that after a career night at home with 19 points and 9 boards, she finished with 0 points and 2 boards. ARRRRRRGGGGGGGGHHHH

Terribad turnovers and fouling: When A&M jumped out to a 9-0 early lead, I though this game was gonna be bad (we kept turning it over, hence the lopsided early lead), but we quickly forced A&M to turn it over also... but long rant short, our turnover forcing turned to foul calling in the second half, whereas their turnover forcing was called as blocks and turnovers by the refs. We finished with 23 turnovers and 20 fouls.

Dying by the 3: If you can't depend on fair officiating, depend on your shot... or die by it. We shot 30 percent from the 3 overall... but that translates to 50 percent in the first half (yay!) and 25 percent in the second (booo!). 2 for 8 in the second to be exact. Missing those shots as A&M continued to get foul calls really effed us in the second half.

Rebounding: When your team's top rebounder is on the bench instead of in the game, you would hope someone else would step up... but instead, our leading team rebounders were our freshmen guards, with 4 each. Yes, four.

Anyone else witness KU beat OU on the mens side? It was like that --- we were ahead at the half (yay!), badger takes her dogs for a halftime walk, arrives back late for the second half, only to discover that our lead is not only gone, but totally out of reach by that point.

And now, Sherri Coale uses the word "discombobulated:"

"We got discombobulated defensively so we couldn't function offensively... Our offense bleeds into our defense. We could never get into synch, didn't have much composure and our point guards didn't handle that ball pressure very well."

Next game: 7 p.m. Wednesday hosting Texas Tech. If we drop this one, we might miss the NCAA tournament. Yes, I'm already thinking that far ahead. We can't keep losing and expect a bid.

Boomer anyways :(

The Tech game tomorrow should be pretty exciting! How long has it been since Tech was ranked in the top 10?

As far as missing the tournament, we have improved every single game. The committee always factors that in when handing out bids. I think if we could just get one of the post players to be consistent and not get in foul trouble we could compete with anyone in the league.

Billy: I've worked the refs a lot over the years, and I don't think it does any good.

Who knew Billy Tubbs would top his first half performance in the second half?

Put on roller skates and call it roller derby.

But that's not this game's MOMENT OF BILLY. No, no, no, it's not Billy unless he's insulting the refs :D

(After Whitney Hand is called for a wtf foul on defense)
Other guy: That came from the official on the other side of the court!
Billy: You called it.
Other guy: The two refs closest to Whitney didn't see anything!
Billy: The far side has an excellent view. Excellent view.

I should note that I am relying on my memory for these so I may be missing a few words here or there. But in a nutshell, if you are missing these Sooner Network broadcasts of mens and womens basketball, you are missing Billy. And thus, you are not laughing as much as I am. Get watching!

I had no idea that Tech was still undefeated, because usually, Tech sucks. It was like the one year when Nebraska was suddenly good. It's like "Uhhhh, but Nebraska sucks at womens basketball." In other words, the Big 12 is the women's version of the men's Big East in basketball... but because we aren't watered down with 20 billion teams, we are going to have to play these tough, ranked opponents more than once, both on the road and at home, and then potentially again in the Big 12 tourney (and perhaps one more time in the NCAAs).

Last night was like watching OU play against OU in the first half, because Tech and OU both came out firing threes, lobing turnovers and were very evenly matched. Then, the 16-straight-missed shots (aka HELL) began mid-second half. Fortunately, Tech could not capitalize on such good fortune for various reasons --- fouling us too much (Billy when their coach stormed onto the court to protest: "She's asking for a technical."), turning over the ball too much, missing their own shots... so fortunately, we kept it within 7. And then, miraculously, came out with a victory.

Yes, 16 straight missed shots: We only shot just under 30 percent from the floor in the second half (34 percent in the entire game). It was rebounding, foul shots and Tech incompetence that kept us in the game. The missed shots were absolute torture to watch... but I imagine it was even worse for Sherri (you've seen the death stare --- Sherri was just in full-on sulking mode during that drought -- sitting, glaring, hands on face... it was bad).

Awww, Landry Jones is still Whitney's dork: That was my first thought when they cut to him in the final minutes (we were down a few shots at the time, he looked nervous, but dorky above all). But he got to see Whitney have a career night. 11 for 11 from the free throw line to get 24 points (including like 18 in the first half or so), 8 rebounds, 4 assists and tons of defense (including that MOMENT OF BILLY mentioned above).

Fouls galore: At one point during the game, Tech had four players on the floor with four fouls and there were like 6 minutes left in the game. We had our own foul trouble in the post, but miraculously (the word of the night), none of our girls fouled out. Tech being in extreme foul trouble allowed us to end our shooting drought when it mattered the most. I think both teams were in double bonus for the final 10 minutes or so, making that shooting drought period even longer and more torturous (cue Sherri sulking).

Our freshmen are awesome: How can we have two straight freshmen classes this good, but not be as highly touted as the Paris twin/Abi era? Because we are now the Big East of womens basketball, yes. However, happy to report that our freshmen continue to step up to this crazy high level of competition. DeShawn (4 points, 4 rebounds, 4 assists), Kay Kay (6 points, 6 rebounds, 2 blocks) and Sharane (9 points, 3 rebounds) are all solid contributors... and DeShawn to Sharane last-minute shot sealed the victory... or at least made our lead margin 3 points instead of 1 :)

Aaryn: She only shot 3 for 16, but had the scare of the night when she dove to save a possession... and was still in the first few rows moments later. As a precaution, she sat out the final minutes of the game after that. Said Sherri: "Actually (assistant coach) Jan (Ross) jumped in the huddle and said, “Your teammate just dove three rows into the sideline. Go win this game for her."

Player of the game: Whitney Hand. There were 21 lead changes in that game and Whitney witnessed every last one, playing all 40 minutes. Her knees are either entirely healed or she slept in a bed of ice last night. Either way, aside from the team's scoring drought, she was on fire on both sides of the court and perfect from the free throw line.

And now, Sherri:

I would venture to say this is one of the gustiest performances our team has had in a long time. Not just this team, but our program. To shoot the way that we shot and to hang around and put ourselves in the position to have a chance to win and to make that happen. It’s different sometimes at the end of the game when you have a chance when it lands in your lap. We had to make that happen through the final minute and a half of the game. Big plays from young players and unbelievable heart and will from Whitney Hand. I am just really proud of our kids.

Next game: Noon Saturday @ Stillwater. I am counting on our team to take me outta orange hell. Otherwise, my avatar is gonna get even worse, I'm afraid. Why do I keep pinning my Sooner vs Cowboy fortune on games in Stillwater?!?!

Usually I end these entries with a Sherri Coale quote. Let's start with one today:

The sky is not falling.

Uggggh... how bout another:

We're a work in progress. That is not a secret to anyone on the planet.

No doubt. And one more:

You look up and you go 'how did we just do that?' You look up today and it's 'how did we just do that?' It's just a different ending. We led the entire game and had opportunities to put them away in both halves and didn't seize those opportunities and then we imploded down the stretch

My avatar is supposed to now be Kurt Budke and Travis Ford rotatingly laughing at my OU fandom, but fortunately, a technical glitch prevents me from doing that immediately... but alas, it will be awhile before any OU team can save me from my Poke losing hell

So let's just keep quoting Sherri so that I don't devolve into a four-letter worded blog:

It's just a long, long road. Just as you can't stand around and dance about a victory for two or three days when you get one, you can't roll around and wallow in a loss when you have one of those, too. It's the next play, it's the next game. It's a long road, and there will be a lot of highs and lows and you have to endure it.

We didn't move. You have to move without the basketball. We didn't move all night. We didn't change sides of the floor with the ball, our posts didn't finish very well. I think a lot of that was self imposed.

In any event, when you lose the game in the final minute, it sucks. It also sucks when you plan your day out so that you can only watch one OU game... and you choose the one where we get upset instead of us upsetting the opponent (congrats to the mens team, btw).

Rather than recap this further, let's just end with:

I want to comment on Sherri Coale. She has texted me a lot, she's called, she's been a good friend and I think this is one game that is important to keep it in context. They have had our number for a long time, so it's big for our kids. I want to mention her name in the fact that she has been good to me during the tragedy and during this situation.

So... there's more to life than winning and losing (an avatar/sig/status/vBookie bet). Boomer Sooner anyways.

Nah, she doesn't coach football, so she's safe. Another 10-win season by Stoops and Co., however, and you may see more anti-coach nicknames than "Vulnerables" floating around. Imagine that...a 10-win season being a disappointment in football...

The season kind of reminds me of my senior year at OU, 2004-05. We were not ranked, we came out flat in the Big 12 tourney, but on conference reputation and OU history alone, we not only got an at-large tourney bid, but were also an 8-seed. Wow, right? We were out in one round, but it was a very nice nod to how tough our road was and what we had accomplished in previous seasons.

As such, the Big 12 is uber tough top to bottom (except perhaps KU, who will probably never compete on the womens side, knock on wood) and I would not discount our chances of a sympathy/respectful NCAA bid, regardless of how the rest of the season goes.

I can't believe OU lost that game. Last 10 points by aggy. Blah!

The shooting drought did us in like it should have against Texas Tech a few nites ago. We can't survive shooting droughts against everyone and Poke took full advantage.

OSU might not be the most talented team every night (although they do have good talent) but they really play together and they leave everything on the floor which is what I really like about this team.
This was like OSU beating OU in football in 2002. The better team lost, but because of the emotions and homefield advantage and everything else surrounding the game (including a surprise appearance by Barry Sanders for the first time in a long time), OU was doomed. How doomed was OU?

VERY doomed.

I'm very disappointed in the outcome of this bedlam game. OU had the lead the entire game until the end when it got incredibly sloppy. OU would have won if they'd just slowed it down, calmed down and took care of the dang basketball. I will be interested in Badger's take on Coach Coale's comments.
My take on this is that Sherri is as frustrated and going crazy as the longtime fans of the program, because she knows how good her talent is, but her competition this year is higher than usual AND we have the tendency to let bad situations get worse...and worse...and... HOW MANY TURNOVERS AND MISSED SHOTS TILL WE JUST GET LUCKY AND SOMETHING GOES RIGHT? Y'know? What disappoints me about Sherri is that the way her quotes read from postgame transcripts, she sounds tired and defeated. I hope the rest of the team doesn't feel that way.

Nicole Griffin frustrates me. I know she tries and I will give her that. She's just not right for that position.
She reminds me of a lot of my female classmates and teammates from high school sports... they are athletic, but they move like they are not giving total effort. Their stats are good, but when you watch them, you're like "ARE YOU EVEN TRYING?!" and they probably wouldn't know that they look like that without watching tape later or something.

She's tall and she's big and she's athletic, so she probably has no idea that she looks like she's just letting the ball continuously slip through her fingers, or letting rebounds go to the opponent that she's fighting against for them, or the shots look so effortless and awful... I am not saying this to hurt feelings or be overly critical or a bad fan or whatever, but rather, just trying to explain why we all feel so frustrated with how she plays. You see players like Joanna muscling out rebounds and steal attempts from opponents, and you see taller stringbean/toothpick/other tall-but-thin-comparison-description Nicole not doing that, and you are like WTF.

Anyways, next game is 7 p.m. Tuesday @ Kansas State. It's allegedly an FSN televised game, but since it's @ KSU, likely no Billy Tubbs. Crap.

I am in the mood to rant, so let's do one of those inbetweenie postings where I rant and the two of you that haven't defected to ouhoops.com yet read... or any of you that I guilted off the football forum, hehehe.

State of the Sooners/Big 12:

Conference ranking: We are currently ranked 7th of the 10 remaining Big 12 teams. We are 2-2 in-conference, 10-5 overall. Silver lining? This places us ahead of Texas. Nyah, nyah, lady whorns.

Baylor: The ESPNesque being cleverness of the weekend was that Baylor football, mens basketball and womens basketball hadn't lost since October. The Baylor behemoth dunker and her overlordess Skeletor are 17-0 and ranked No. 1 unquestionably in the country. Our record isn't worse because we haven't had to play these chest thumping chicks yet (yes, they do that at Texas A&M also... ewwww)

Kansas State: Our next conference opponent is also the other sole remaining undefeated (in-conference play) Big 12 team. Did I mention this game is on the road? Well, I guess we just handed another Big 12 team its first in-conference (and first of the season) loss, so can we do it again?

Kansas: While standing 3-1 in-conference and 14-2 overall, don't fear the ladyhawks. They really haven't been challenged yet. Then again, we are dropping games I thought we'd win, so perhaps we should fear everyone at this point.

Texas Tech: 2-2 in-conference, just like us, thanks to us and KSU giving them their first in-conference (and overall) losses of the season this past week. They are one of just three Big 12 teams in last week's polls, but that might change after two losses to unranked teams. Dunno... KSU might get a ranking nod though. It'd be nice to beat another ranked foe if so :)

Oklahoma State: My avatar is laughing at me until February, but as it taunts me and the rest of us, I can live with the fact that we were in a no-win situation on Saturday and fate had already determined that we were gonna lose some how, some way. OSU's luck will not continue and they will lose more as conference play continues, including when they come to Norman? Would I bet my avatar and everything else on it? Meh, what have I got to lose at this point...

Texas A&M: If the refs didn't job us at College Station, we would have beaten these traitorous aggies. They are one of three Big 12 ranked teams, but screw them anyway.

Oklahoma: It is a testament to how tough the Big 12 is that a talented bunch like our girls are ranked seventh-best in this crazy-tough league. Alas, you can't ignore the fact that we have five losses and have tanked in the rankings since starting in the top 25 due to wtf losses. Is it a rebuilding year? Yes. Is the future bright? Definitely.

Texas: Living off reputation alone, they still get votes in the top 25 polls, but after a few more embarrassing losses (KU and OSU), don't expect them to get any votes after this week's poll. 11-5 overall and 1-3 in-conference (they also lost to Baylor), Texas' season is derailing almost as quickly as ours appears to be. So... can we count on a few wins over them this year? I really hope so.

Misery: No other way to put it for the Lady Tigers. 0-4 to start the conference season and about go to Texas A&M, then host OSU, then go to Texas. I think you can ink in 0-7 for what they'll be after those games.

Iowa State: Another 0-4 conference record, including a 80-51 loss to us. If you are one of 20 people that actually receive the Longhorn Network, you will be able to see Iowa State lose at Texas this week. If not, there's also the home loss on Saturday they'll have when Texas Tech comes to town.

Bid outlook: Of our current teams, we got 7 bids to the NCAA tourney last year if my count is correct (Texas A&M, Baylor, Iowa State, Oklahoma, Texas, Texas Tech and Kansas State). I think we can expect the same number this year. Thus, we are in the position to get a bid... so long as we don't slip further. We'll see.

Guess who...
http://grfx.cstv.com/photos/schools/okla/sports/w-baskbl/auto_action/5850779.jpeg

65-57

A hearty ha-ha to Kansas State for being another OU victim of "you-used-to-be-undefeated-in-conference-play-till-you-played-us" syndrome, divebombing No. 10 Lady Raiders last week and now you, No. 23 Ladycats.

Protip: We beat you because we will never put "Lady" front of "Sooners."

Protip2: Hussle?????? Is nobody watching your games or something to have not caught that typo?! Well, judging on images of your crowd at last night's game (http://www.kstatesports.com/view.gal?id=110542)... probably not.

Some quick notes before I address a very important subject:

Fouling? Nah: The refs called hardly anything last night up till the last minute when KSU was deliberately fouling to stop the clock. Nobody on either team had more than 3.

No Joanna: Reportedly out with a fractured jaw from a Lady Poke's elbow on Saturday. Hopefully will be back for our next game.

No Jacqueline or Katherine either: For those of you holding out for your massive vBookie payout on either of these girls entering the game... hold on longer. I am not sure why they aren't playing more... probably because our other players are playing so well.

Unquestioned player of the game: Aaryn "Vegas" Ellenberg
Why even debate it. When we were trailing early, she decided to start off the game shooting 5 for 5 from three range and when we were starting to let KSU back into the game, even briefly trailing, she decided it was time to steal the ball from them. Frequently. She ended with 31 points, 9 steals and only two turnovers. Woot!

And now... that dreaded phrase in every college sport:

"We are young."

We've all heard this excuse many times over. When a new coach comes in, he needs to get his recruits in before (Texas A&M football) will win. And then, once he gets his recruits in, (Texas A&M football) fans say that the team is young and needs to grow up and get more college experience. And then, (Texas A&M football) players graduate and never do win that much and fans go back to saying that the team is young again. Derp.

In the case of OU womens basketball, however, we can actually plausibly use this excuse. Here's what happened:

1: Our senior class ended up being juniors.
Whitney Hand and Jasmine Hartman were recruited together as our only signees (if I recall correctly) four years ago. Well, Whitney and Jasmine have both gotten acquainted with their ACLs and as an end result, will actually finish their careers in the same year after all... near year.

Our "senior" on our team is actually only in her second year at OU. Jelina Cerina transferred in as a junior last year from NEO.

2- Last junior standing: And barely standing at that. Lyndsey Cloman, a team captain, went down in our first exhibition game and will get to repeat her junior status next season. Joanna McFarland is having a wonderful year, but alas, sat out Tuesday's game with a reported fractured jaw.

So, if you are keeping track so far, we have no "seniors." Our only team captain left who is not out for the entire season is the only "junior" that played last night. And everyone else?

3- Our three sophomore starters. You're NOT allowed to have a sophomore slump, because Morgan Hook is our starting point guard, Aaryn Ellenberg is our starting shooting (and please keep making your shots!) guard, and Nicole Griffin is our starting center.

4- Our freshmen learning curve. DaShawn Harden and Sharane Campbell have been logging tons of minutes since the beginning of the season. Kaylon "Kay Kay" Williams, no longer injured, is now a serious contributor (when she's not in foul trouble).

5- The rest. Freshman Katherine Zander and sophomore Jacqueline Jeffcoat have not seen a lot of playing time thus far. Is it injuries? Sickness? Practice? Who knows.

"We are young."
Unlike some teams out there (like Texas A&M football), we can legitimately tie our shooting slumps, our turnover proneness and many other mental errors to the fact that we are relying on mostly younger players to contribute immediately and often. Last night, we started three sophomores (Griffin, Ellenberg and Hook) and a freshman (Harden I think, in place of injured McFarland) and a redshirt junior (Hand of course). It will likely lead to our downfall, or at least a lot of fan angst, but wow, is this young group talented. The future is bright, and the present? It's not too shabby.

Sherri?

She is just really capable of that. I would like to say I agree with you maybe, but I have seen her be just unbelievable. She is kind of streaky like that. She gets going and then there is no telling how long the flood gates might be open. Her first half was pretty incredible. I’ll have to look on film but a couple of those three point shots were pretty deep and well contested. She is just a scorer. She scores the ball. That is what she does.

Next game: Hosting the lady whorns 11 a.m. Saturday.

Get well soon, Joanna!

Out indefinitely, jaw wired shut (http://newsok.com/ou-womens-basketball-sooners-lose-joanna-mcfarland-to-broken-jaw/article/3641389)

Joanna McFarland, Oklahoma's leading rebounder, will be sidelined indefinitely after suffering a broken jaw late in the game last Saturday against Oklahoma State.

McFarland underwent surgery on Monday. She didn't play in the Sooners' 65-57 win over Kansas State Tuesday night. She will return this season but it's uncertain how long she will be sidelined.

“Her mouth will be wired shut for two weeks so she'll be out at least two weeks,” Coale said. “It would take a tougher person than me to get through it. That's a tough, tough, thing to have your mouth wired shut.”

Happy belated 47th birthday, Sherri!

On Jan. 19, 1965, the savior of OU womens basketball was born in Healdton, Okla., wherever the hell that is.
http://pix.epodunk.com/locatorMaps/ok/OK_15815.gif

From her humble beginnings as an English teacher and high school coach in Norman to several Final Fours and Big 12 regular season and tourney titles, and everything inbetween (5-22 first season at OU in 1997, five Sweet Sixteens including last season, 12-straight trips to the Big Dance), thank you Sherri!

And now, f*** Texas!

73-67

Despite a high number of turnovers (23), missed shots (67 percent for free throws) and a very close, competitive game, this game was fun to watch for one reason: Texas is incompetent. Texas sucks, and it's not just because we Sooner fans chant it repeatedly. They truly, undoubtedly SUCK this year. So anyways, you missed a really fun game if you missed it. They were inept, they were making terrible decisions with shot selection and passes and everything inbetween. It was laugh out loud hilarious... even if they kept the game close.

Stringbean Nicole Griffin: She is as thin as a toothpick (or a stringbean or whatever), but all she had to do was stand there and hold her tall hands in the air for Texas to make the bad decision to shoot. As an end result, Nicole ended with 9 blocks, because Texas is stupid and Nicole was exactly where she needed to be to make the defensive stop.

Hand shut down... on offense: Whoever was guarding her did well, because Whitney finished with only 6 points and she had problems getting open. However, this same person must have never learned the art of boxing out on offense, because Whitney also had 7 defensive rebounds, so haha Texas once again.

Joanna update: I just watched Sherri's weekend show and she is going to be out for two weeks. I am guessing that she gets credit for time already out, hehe, so look for her to come back in a week or so. I don't know how that Poke did it, but McFarland's jaw was broken in three places somehow. I didn't think the hit looked that bad, but wow. I am of course hoping that she makes it back for Baylor, even if she has to wear a protective mask:
http://www.mwctoys.com/images/review_jasonqtr_1a.jpg
Froshie minutes: With Joanna out, Kay Kay Williams (14 minutes) started, and freshmen studs DeShawn Harden (7 minutes) and Sharane Campbell (26 minutes) are also getting solid playing time. As mentioned in another thread, Texas' lineup resembled their football team's offensive line --- big and unathletic. Thus, our froshie guards had less minutes this game than last, because we needed to counter their o-linemen (linewomen I guess) with size ourselves.

Player of the game: Stringbean Nicole Griffin.
It is hard to ignore Vegas going 3 for 3 for threes, 7 rebounds, 2 steals and 18 points. So, honorable mention to Aaryn. However, 9 points, 9 blocks, 7 rebounds and even 3 assists for Nicole means she is the game's top performer. It was just devastating to Texas to constantly be denied "easy" layups or shots underneath the basket because Nicole was there. Plus, I feel bad about giving Griffin crap. And calling her "Stringbean." There is much that I feel bad about, and we are going to need her in our next game. But before that, what does Sherri say?

I think two big keys defensively was, one, Nicole Griffin’s presence in the paint. She was really, really good. Location, when they were all on the right time and not fouling, being disciplined with their shot blocking and guarding with two steps, which is something we talk about with the posts all the time, staying between your guy and the basket all the time so they don’t get an angle. And then also, the job that Whitney did on [Chassidy] Fussell.

Next game: Baylor comes to Norman, 8 p.m. Thursday. I expect us to get ranked this week after beating KSU and UT, but our next opponent may be humbling... Undefeated, No. 1 in the country Baylor. With the dunking Behemoth. And Coach Skeletor. Intimidating? Yes. Unbeatable? Sherri says...

Obviously they are a very, very talented team at every position. They have not really had and trouble with anyone. They have had a couple of close halves but really no serious challenges. They play a very rigorous schedule themselves. They have a lot of talented scores that go beyond obviously [Odyssey] Sims and Brittney Griner. But, I think that is where you have to start when you have a game plan against these guys. You can’t stop Brittney Griner from getting 21 to 25 points. She is going to get them no matter what. Nothing you can do to her. But, what you can do is not shoot yourself in the foot and turn it over 23 times. You can’t give them extra possessions and you can’t let other guys go and have career days on you.

I am setting vBookie's point spread at 15 in favor of the evil Waco-ites. We will need everyone to have career nights to keep it close or have any chance of winning.

By the way, Sherri's hometown of Healdton is in Carter County, roughly 25 miles west of Ardmore. It's five miles north of U.S. 70. The only highway through there is OK 76, and the city put up "Home of Sherri Buben Coale" signs at both ends of town.

I'm not sure what the source was, but someone posted a funny one of Mulkey that showed a facial expression that spoke of something like, "If I had testicles, this felt like getting kicked there" over an official's call.

But in all seriousness, I get so sick of how she gets away with some of the tantrums she throws, not to mention things like the tacky comment about how Danielle Robinson didn't deserve all-tournament in the Big 12 just because we lost in the semis.

She is by far my least favorite coach in the Big 12. I am not sure what her relationship is with Sherri, but from what I can tell, she is very cordial with all of her other colleagues in the Big 12 past and present... but really doesn't talk about Skeletor. Perhaps she's just taking the high road by not saying anything if she can't say anything nice :D

Just google image search her name (her real name... although "Skeletor" I'm sure would bring up some fun images of her too)

In short, Beat Baylor. And now, a short story:

Once upon a time, Baylor beat Texas A&M three times in one season. Then the NCAA selection committee decided to place Texas A&M in the same bracket as Baylor. Texas A&M beat Baylor on its fourth of four attempts in one season and went on to win the national title.

Skeletor has never shown any signs of humanity since.

Kim Mulkey walks on water. At various times over the years, I've actually wanted her to take over coaching both the men's basketball team and the football team.

She's a goddess among mere mortals. I'm so proud of what she has done for Baylor University, the class and dignity she shows both on and off the field, and for being such a tremendous ambassador of all aspects of Baylor from the academic side to other sports.

I don't know what her relationship is with Coale, but I don't think it's a very cordial one. A few weeks ago we played, I think it was Texas, and after the game she had a rather long discussion with the UT coach. People were speculating about what they were talking about, and Mulkey later said that she was thanking the other coach for pulling her starters after Mulkey pulled hers (it was a blowout win by Baylor). WHICH, evidently, was a subtle backhanded swipe at Coale. Last season when Baylor had a rather substantial lead on OU, Mulkey pulled the starters but Coale left hers in and in so doing closed the the gap in the score which made the game look more competitive than it was. Mulkey evidently took offense to this.

Kim Mulkey walks on water.
Reality: The ice queen turned the universal solvent and lifeblood for all that lives as hard as stone.

At various times over the years, I've actually wanted her to take over coaching both the men's basketball team and the football team.
Reality: RG3 would have stayed at Houston and your hyper AAU runner on the men's side wouldn't have his NBA team running around haphazardly to victory.

She's a goddess among mere mortals.
Reality: She's sold her soul to the devil, but divorced the devil because he wasn't evil enough for her.

I'm so proud of what she has done for Baylor University, the class and dignity she shows both on and off the field, and for being such a tremendous ambassador of all aspects of Baylor from the academic side to other sports.
Reality: Punching a player warrants more than a two-game suspension. Screaming at the refs is not gamesmanship. Using your personal divorce to make a point about Texas A&M leaving for the SEC is... disturbing at best.

I don't know what her relationship is with Coale, but I don't think it's a very cordial one.
Reality: OK, it's pretty much a substantiated rumor.

Reality: Please hand us victory. We don't like working for it. 40 minutes is too much to expect of these poor student-athletes, waaaah waaahh waaaaah/

Reality: If Baylor doesn't win at least one national title with Brittney Griner dunking on everyone, it may go down as the greatest failure in the history of womens college basketball. At least when we didn't get one with the Paris twins, it was during the UConn domination era.

I have the privilege of knowing a former Big XII WBB referee very well. She consistently cracks me up when the subject of Skeltor is brought up. My referee loves Sherri, has deep respect for several other conference coaches and was pretty shaken when she heard about Budke, who she had called some LaTech games for, as she had when Mulkey was there as an assistant before him.

"Mulkey is a true pain in the a s s, has zero tact and likely has Asberger's, but she sure can coach. She thinks of nothing else...ever."

Makes me laugh.

We briefly led. Skeletor screeched her menacing horrific howl, which descended on the refs ears.

Refs suddenly stopped calling stuff against Baylor as our players even started getting injured:

Sherri, the symbol of all that is good and right in womens college basketball, pleaded her case to the officials to no avail.

http://photos3.newsok.com/cache/r620-b28f20425abcfab424815b5e797c90fc.jpg

For you see, Skeletor's deafening pitch reached epic proportions that drowned out any other noise in the crowded LNC, and alas, had turned the refs into mindless drones.

62-59

I am seriously soooo glad that this road game wasn't televised or stuff might have been broken in my house... here are the following reasons why:

Our leading scorer had two points: Aaryn "Vegas" Ellenberg, who likes to regularly put up 20, 30 or at least some number in the teens, was 0-5 from three. And had a total of two points.

We shot 4 for 17 from three: When you see a final score that close against a team that was 0-7 in-conference (now 0-8), you know that we shot horribly. 33 percent overall. Argh.

13 second-half lead changes: We were down 3 at the half, which I think was a much larger lead a few minutes earlier (9 I think). I will provide a few Coale quotes to back up how tired and lethargic and unmotivated we were apparently playing.

Their leading scorer had 24: And ours had 14. Sherri was apparently so angry with Nicole for not playing more defense that she was benched the first nine minutes of the second half.

Player of the Game: Kaylon "Kay Kay" Williams
She set the season-high milestone for OU with 16 boards, in addition to having 11 points. Remember back early-on when she couldn't play? I'm soooo glad she's off injured/illness reserve, especially with Joanna still out.

http://media.columbiamissourian.com/multimedia/2012/01/28/media/012812_MUwomensbball_376_t_w600_h1200.jpg
(that photo was from when Mizzou took a lead in the second half... it didn't last, obviously)
As much as I'm complaining, I can't imagine how much bawling was going on in the Mizzou locker room afterward, blowing a first half lead and nearly getting your first Big 12 win of the season in your final Big 12 season. Also of note, Mizzou could have sealed their all-time record with OU en route outta the Big 12. Now, they left the door open for us to tie it before they leave the conference (Mizzou currently leads 29-28).

Speaking of you Lady Tigers going to the SEC, a going away present from your friend badger:
http://i42.tinypic.com/15eh4rd.jpg

And now, Sherri Coale:

I used to color my hair about every six weeks. I’ve gone to every three or four days.

Um... wow. I swear I'm not making that up. It's right here (http://www.columbiatribune.com/news/2012/jan/29/oklahoma-holds-of-mu-women/?tigerextra) in the game recap in the Colombia Tribune. Let's see what else she said after the game...

I wasn’t really worried about the... turnaround at all until the official threw up the ball and we saw our first possession, and then I was real worried about it. I don’t know that was. I’m … I’m … I’m speechless. We didn’t look hungry. We didn’t play with great effort, we didn’t play with any enthusiasm, any emotion.

Anything else?

They didn’t play like a team that was down because they haven’t won a conference game yet... They played like a team that felt like they expected to win.

We’ve had trouble with her, her whole career... I’m glad she’s leaving and they’re going to the SEC and I don’t have to do that anymore.

Yeah... too bad Baylor sucks and doesn't have their own SEC invite, eh?

Our next game is 7 p.m. Tuesday @ Kansas. KU is no longer a pushover and this is our first matchup with them this season. Now would be a good time to start smoking... and then quit before this summer when the Norman campus bans it.

Nah, not anymore than usual.

Since this season has been kind of blah so far by badger's crazy impossibly high standards, I'm just to going to take this opportunity to blah blah blah here:

KU has an interesting preview thing on their official site: Saying what would happen if KU wins AND if KU loses. This is new. I wonder if they do this for the men too... of course, we all know what happens when KU mens basketball loses --- their fans dump water on themselves so that they melt before Dorothy's eyes.

A Kansas Win Would...
Make Kansas 13-2 in home games this season, including 3-2 in Big 12 games ... Cut KU's deficit in the all-time series versus Oklahoma to 29-28 ... Halt a 14-game winless streak against the Sooners ... Make coach Bonnie Henrickson 1-8 versus OU, 134-112 at Kansas and 292-174 for her career ... Give Kansas a 98-151 all-time record in Big 12 play ... Make KU 731-510 all time.

As you can see, this is possibly KU's best chance in a very long time of actually beating OU and I fully expect them to take advantage of the opportunity as best as they can by attempting to force turnovers, trying to make big shots and willing themselves to out-rebound our depleted front court (Jaw-anna McFarland is still out unless she surprises everyone).

But, will they? No, they'll just try. Try, try, try.

A Kansas Loss Would...
Make Kansas 12-3 in home games this season, including 2-3 in Big 12 games ... Give Oklahoma its 15th-straight win versus KU and make the all-time record 30-27 between the two schools ... Make coach Bonnie Henrickson 0-9 versus OU, 133-113 at Kansas and 291-175 for her career ... Give Kansas a 97-152 all-time record in Big 12 play ... Make KU 730-511 all time.
They really just reversed what they said above, didn't they?

Here's is what's really at stake -- those WNIT t-shirts that we should be sending to a third world country as an act of charity, rather than selling them for $20 at the OU bookstore. Both of us are solid bubble teams right now, both on the verge of ranking in the top 25 (we are both among teams listed as "others receiving votes") and bubble as far as the NCAA tourney goes. If neither of us can put up a fight against Bay-lor (I think they just lost to them by 28), we need to put up fights against other iffy tourney teams to prove that we are not going to be a one-and-done (like UT usually is, lol).

Oh, and to show that I'm an equal opportunity basher:

The OU womens board is a little bit too nice and cordial for my angst this season, methinks. But, they haven't banned me or haven't guilted me too much yet, so I live with popping in every so often to show off Sooner Psycho's work, or for updates on recruiting or player injuries.

The men's board is tons of fun over there. It's like our football forum here, except for basketball. Tons of hardcore fans of the sport, following our alumni, recruiting, the other conference teams, etc.

So, to everyone from OUHoops' womens board that needs a break from the pleasantries and wants to bash the opposing teams every so often, welcome :)

What OP and firewall settings do you have?

No idea :D

Just stay here. We need more basketball fans around here to balance the footballfootballfootball we usually talk about non-stop.

I just switched to Safari. Not my favorite but it works.

Firefox has gotten to where there have been several sites recently that it simply won't open. Or, an obvious link doesn't work at all. One of these sites is where I store and sell my photographs from. Can't have that not working.

I open Safari and these sites work just fine.

You can download and install more than one browser at a time, can't you? For example, I could download and install Safari without uninstalling Firefox, right? That way, I could see if it was Firefox, on my machine.

Good to see (actually read about) the win on the road vs Kansas tonight. Hopefully, OU will be ranked next week after settling the score with OSU on Saturday and moving into a tie for 2nd place in conference. I'm looking forward to Saturday's bedlam matchup There will be at least 6 from my family going and we are planning to be loud.

Someone please, please, please tell me that Joanna McFarland will be back this Saturday. I would like nothing better than to see her break a few jaws after what the cowpoke girls did to her in Stillwater.

Absolutely.

Some people also like Opera and Google Chrome. You can run all of them and decide.

Lo-def TVs tend to make the players numbers and faces et al blur together, so let me take you through the final two minutes of last night once again:

65-68

We are soooo doomed. KU hit a buzzer beater at the end of the first half, KU hit the game-tying three at the end of regulation and now we are once again playing from behind and haven't hit threes most of the game... HOOK FOR TWO AND A FOUL SHOT COMING UP!

67-68

Hook misses the free throw and KU is charging down the court. We can't afford to just be exchanging buckets at this point. Arrrrrgh... KU STEPPED OUTTA BOUNDS?!?! How did we not foul her? Sweet!

67-68

A few wasted possessions by OU and KU and then OU has the ball back. The shot clock is winding down... please don't travel or turn the ball over, Sooners... Hook is trapped at the baseline and finds a wide open Sharane at the three point line, but we've only made one three all night... SHARANE CAMPBELL FOR THREE!!!! OU LEADS!!!!!

70-68

We all know how this is gonna turn out, don't we? The refs are gonna call some BS foul to keep KU in this game, we are gonna lose or even worse, drag this game even farther out by going to overtime... SHARANE CAMPBELL BLOCKED KU's SHOT!!!!!!!

70-68

KU drops back on defense... wait, they do see the clock, don't we? KU only has one defender back trying to get the ball from OU after the block... Whitney passes to Morgan... Morgan passes to Jelina (NOOOO! She's less than a 50 percent free throw shooter),... Jelina quickly passes to Sharane... KU coaches are frantically waving their arms and screaming for someone to get back on the other side of the court and foul someone to stop the clock! Whitney nearly lobs it to the other side to Morgan when she is fouled. KU just wasted about 25 seconds of precious game clock with our little game of keep-away. About 13-15 seconds left in overtime. Timeout, KU.

70-68

Whitney sinks the first free throw. Another timeout.

71-68

Whitney sinks another free throw, but this time, we are not gonna let up on defense.

72-68

KU misses a desperation two (because we are guarding the three so well) and Sharane Campbell rebounds, wisely holding the ball. She sinks both free throws.

74-68

In case you didn't know, Sharane Campbell, with 24 points and 4 steals, is definitely player of the game. Sherri?

"I’ve said multiple times before that she’s had big games, I love coaching this kid (Campbell) because she wants to learn and you can critique her and it doesn’t affect how she feels about herself. That’s a huge part of being able to coach kids. She benefits when we praise her because she values criticism and she’s a worker. She missed a couple layups in the Missouri game. She came in the next day and made 50 layups going full speed because she missed two in the Missouri game. Tonight she made a big left-handed layup going full speed. She gets the fact that you work on what you aren’t good at and it rewards you. I don’t think she would have ever thought she could play 36 minutes as hard as she played tonight, because she can. We know that and now she knows it."

Speaking of Sherri, I have not seen her this frustrated since 2005, the year we NEARLY also didn't make the postseason (but did, because we have a Kelvinesque March Madness streak going on). She looked like she wanted to scream, to cry, to rip her hair out, to strangle the officials, you name it.

Also of note:

Whitney Hand played the entire game: Overtime and regulation, 45 minutes. Didn't seem to be shooting that well, but did get 16 points.

Kay Kay started: Jaw-anna McFarland is still out, yes, but Kaylon Williams is an awesome freshman, finishing with 8 points and 10 rebounds.

Foul trouble everywhere: In the first half, Nicole picked up two quick fouls and was benched. Kay Kay picked up her second and was benched. Jelina picked up her second foul and... sorry Jelina, we are kind of struggling right now. Please don't get any more fouls this half. Due to big girl foul trouble, Jacqueline Jeffcoat actually made an appearance last night, playing 4 minutes in the second half. Also, the reffing was inconsistent and sucky for both teams... does that make it consistent if it's sucky for both teams? NO!

Vegas woes: Her shot is still off, methinks it's still taped due to injury. She missed six shots and only had a point from a free throw.

Threes? What threes?!: We shot 2 for 10 from three the entire game, overtime included. However, when we hit them, we really needed them. The second one by Sharane (the only one she shot all night) was what gave us the lead in overtime.

This was, by far, the most frustrating win I've ever witnessed in my fandom time. I've seen frustrating games, yes, but not frustrating wins. Without the W, lump this into every game we've every played against Stanford, that Baylor blowout we had last week, and that Ole Miss tourney game where we were highly favored and they ran circles around us and the Paris twins

On a final Sherri note:

To sit here and say I’m really proud of our kids would be the ultimate understatement. To do what we did tonight against a very good KU team, who played well, without Vegas (Aaryn Ellenberg) being involved is pretty remarkable. I thought our character, our resolve rose to the surface late in the game. We had some huge plays from gutsy basketball players—character kids who stayed with it and kept believing under the watchful leadership of Whitney Hand. She’s such a stalwart. She continues to keep the attitude, the mindset on the floor and in the huddles. That stuff is important and we just played together down the stretch. Kansas fought like crazy and (Monica) Engelman hit a huge shot, but she was open. We were open and didn’t hit ours. That was huge and then for our guys to have to play so many minutes and play five more (in overtime), I’m just really proud of them.

Also of note, this is OU's 15th-straight win over KU, and makes KU's coach 0-9 against OU.

Next game: 12 noon Saturday against OSU at home.

One day left, people.

If for no other reason than I don't want psycho Poke fans to facebook/twitter/life stalk me when they are in the slightest bit offended over anything (http://www.orangepower.com/threads/mizzou-fan-tweets-way-across-the-line.138786/), I am ready to not be orange anymore. For the past three major OU-OSU meetings, the games have been in Stillwater. This includes December's football game (argh), the men's basketball game (double argh) and the women's game (triple bypass surgery ARGH!!!!!!!!!!).

So finally, we are gonna be in Norman, so I can automatically assume that will equal a win. Because losing in Norman is only allowed when you're playing Baylor... or Tech in football following a huge weather delay

All of this time being orange has helped me appreciate several things about the Pokes, so here goes:

1- Fandom is determined based on post counts, game attendance and donor spending. I know life must be very rough when your men's team is consistently in the postseason and you feel the need to verify to the world why your opinion matters on the Internet, but GET OVER YOURSELVES.

2- Jokes about flying are reasons to ruin people's lives. What keeps me sane here when people disagree, insult, spew hate or the like on the Internet is that it reflects poorly on them and that I'm not gonna sink to their level (except in jest, of course). If you are offended, remember that it's the Internet and the Internet is forever, so don't be forever linked without something ignorant and hateful and GET OVER YOURSELVES.

3- I just cannot emphasize this enough, GET OVER IT, GET OVER IT, GET OVER IT. When Stanford's band insults our great state, GET OVER IT. When a ref calls your field goal bad and you think there's a big BCS conspiracy against you, GET OVER IT. When other fanbases/media/etc do not "eat crow" or acknowledge your team's greatness to the extent that your fanbase does, GET OVER IT.

Ahhhh... I needed to get that off my chest. :)

Thank you for putting up with that rant. We are totally beating OSU tomorrow and if not... oh man... hate to think about that...

Wow, is there a game tonite already? Yes, and it's already on vBookie, so predict whether we'll lose by more than 20 or less than 20.

Also, thank you so much to Sheri and the Sooners for taking me outta avatar hell. Three straight games in Stillwater in major sports tends to give the Pokes an unfair advantage, so it would make sense that as soon as a game gets to Norman that Barry Switzer is putting on his Billy Sims afro and shouting LOL at the world.

"Wait, did you just say that OU will lose by more than 20 possibly?!"
http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5214/5449751224_7786dd7828.jpg
Yes, possibly. I mean, we did just lose to this opponent by more than 30 at home. Hope is fleeting, even for the most diehard OU fans with this game.

"Come on, give us a chance."

OK. If we shoot threes really really well, don't bonk free throws and play solid defense against ALL of their primary scorers and not just one, we will win.

"I'm gonna jump up and down and throw a hissy fit till you give us more chances to win!"
http://www.bestweekever.tv/bwe/images/2010/04/Kim-M-Baylor-coach.jpg
OK... if our opponent misses tons of shots, gets called for tons of fouls and can't rebound worth shizzle, we win also... so long as we don't do the exactly same thing back.

"What is this, some kind of ranked opponent like KU? We just beat them last week, you know."
http://cache.daylife.com/imageserve/05IVaEJ6DMcBX/350x.jpg
This opponent is sooooo ranked that they also beat KU... by nearly 30.

"OK, I give up. Who are we playing tonight?"
http://cache.daylife.com/imageserve/04UaejNaB94ME/546x.jpg
Let's just say I really don't like them. I have pretty much lost all semblance of respect for them and would love it if it they lost every game from here to eternity, not just the one against us and I giggle every time they lose... which means there hasn't been any giggling this year at all. Eff last night's game. I don't like that program, from its coaches to its players.

But... their fans! They are a spirited bunch. I like that we and Baylor both have fans that care about womens basketball (although if you are looking for the internet fans, you'll have to go to that other board, hehe) enough to attend games en masse, wear pepto bismol pink and get grouchy over any calls that go against your team (even if they're quite obvious!).

So... skipping my evaluation of the game (In a nutshell, we got called for tons of fouls and made virtually NO SHOTS in the second half. THE END), let's just evaluate their fandom:

Link (http://www.baylorfans.com/forums/showthread.php?t=232968)

really pathetic, but not at all surprising

In my personal defense, I've been trying to find some way to get excited about every game, and in this case, I took the most notorious cases of Baylor/Skeletor rage and put them in a single post. When I bashing Kansas, I was trash talking the Wizard of Oz. While bashing OSU, I was... hmmm... I think I was telling them to stop being offended and silly Internet crap. A good message to any Baylor fans that take offense to this!

Oklahoma had their big-time recruit (C. Paris) and failed to win a NC. They squandered a great opportunity. It's our turn now and they are having a hard time dealing with that.

I wish we could have gotten more Final Fours, more Big 12 titles and even one championship for Courtney Paris and the rest of the Sooners. But, it was still a very fun time to be a Sooner fan during the Paris twin era and I hope they would say the same about playing at OU. It was about that time when students starting showing up more to the games, just to see how good CP3 really was... I imagine Baylor's noticed the same thing after they got Britney Griner.

either way it is really bad and really stupid
I'm glad they're catching on that it's not something to be taken seriously. I could give a serious evaluation of this "rivalry" and point out the numerous times we've swept them, the times we've stolen the Big 12 crown from them, the fact that we have one more Final Four appearance than them (although yes, you have the national title, congrats and all), but instead, as you can see in my above post... "HATE GREEN." lol.

That OU poster is like all other sooners.. proud to be call a sooner (or cheater on the land rush). When they start their song, I mumble "Boomer cheater, boomer cheater" to myself

Ever notice when Baylor gets any semblance of success they sound a bit more... well, Texan? Guess that makes sense. However, the other Texas schools usually don't resort to this state stereotype crap unless they're losing... so I guess Baylor is in limbo right now.

Again I say, the OU hate stems from the Coale and Mulkey beauty and fashion competition. Coale had no competition in looks and dress until Kim came into the league, and immediately it was a cold shoulder, way before anything happened on the court. Now, Coales dislike is the fans dislike.

I just wanted to share that comment with all of you so you could laugh too.

I'm sure CP paid back her scholarship as promised.

If it ever comes up again, CP3 did offer to pay it back and OU flat-out refused to accept any repayment at all, because of the way she elevated the program (and she did, as we've been to a Final Four and Sweet 16 since her departure).

Their stupidity stems from anger which stems from frustration which stems from our current awesomeness and their current not awesomeness.

When a program dominates the game and their conference like Rocky Top or UConn, then we'll talk about envy and jealousy. Till then, quite happy with where we are, even if we're not the ones beating opponents by 30ish right now.

So anyways, our next game is 2 p.m. Saturday hosting Mizzou. I fully expect to win (check out vBookie for details!). Congrats to the three who predicted Joanna's triumphant return! Quite a trooper, being out there with a mask against the top team in the country. Hope she keeps getting healed and doesn't re-injure, because we'll need her to make the tourney.

On to the Mizzou home game tomorrow!

Right... of course :)

There are many reasons to hate the state of Missouri. This site (http://amplicate.com/hate/missouri) lists many of them.

But, since this is primarily a sports message board, let us stick to sports-specific reasons to hate on the misery that is known as Misery:

1- They, not Texas, are the reason the Big 12 fell apart.

Remember when they thought they were good enough to go to the Big Ten? Link here. (http://www.tulsaworld.com/sportsextra/article.aspx?subjectid=231&articleid=20091219_231_B2_JEFFER128618) Their governor has a big mouth, big enough to stick several feet inside:

"I'm not going to say anything bad about the Big 12, but when you compare Oklahoma State to Northwestern, when you compare Texas Tech to Wisconsin, I mean, you begin looking at educational possibilities that are worth looking at."

"If a significant conference with a long history of academic and athletic excellence talks about you joining them, you shouldn't just say, 'We're from the old Big 8 and I remember when ...'

"If they want to talk, we should talk, and we should listen."

And then, the Big Ten was like "Hi Nebraska" so then Gov. Nixon (who, if it matters, is a Democrat) decides to open his yapper again. Link (http://sports.espn.go.com/ncb/news/story?id=5288859)

"I think a lot of people were nervous about this process," said Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon, an avid Tigers fan. "We're in the process of landing in a very comfortable place in which we have traditional rivalries, a lot more money and opportunity for a national stage for our student-athletes."

Still, Nixon couldn't resist taking a shot at the two schools scheduled to leave the conference for the Big Ten (Nebraska) and Pac-10 (Colorado) during the next two years.

He called those schools the league's "two weakest basketball programs" while noting that the remaining Big 12 schools could have a better shot of making the NCAA basketball tournament. Nixon said poor win-loss records and weaker schedules by Nebraska and Colorado were dragging down the rankings of other Big 12 schools.

Mizzou courts the Big Ten AGAIN. Once again, the Big Ten DOES NOT WANT THEM. Link again. (http://espn.go.com/blog/bigten/post/_/id/34960/missouri-wants-big-ten-but-isnt-wanted)

But fortunately for the stray cats, the SEC is an animal shelter, taking in the weirdest of the weird critters that need a home, whether they be chickens running around with their heads cut off (or whatever the hell a "gamecock" is) or pigs that have mysteriously sprouted buck teeth from years of not going to the dentist... and the school those pigs from Arkansas attend, also.

So congratulations, Misery Tiggers. Bounce-bounce-bounce your way away from the Hundred Acre Woods and onto... a 0-11 start to your conference season!!!!!!

http://cdn3.sbnation.com/fan_shot_images/146680/091810_073a_pe_mu_fb_vs_san_diego_st_t620.jpg

How in the hell did this happen, Mizzou. Let's check their athletic site... "Cyclones Earn Win over Tigers, 65-52?!" Are you serious?! Is THAT what being an AAU member does to a site designed for fans of your program?! EARN?!?!?!

Eff whatever we had up for our last game. We should have said something Mizzou-like, such as "Lady Bears earn another win over our beloved Sooners"

Better yet, "Skeletor earns technical, recognized as basketball's biggest beyonce" :P

I am not making this stuff up, people. Mizzou's page is right here. (http://www.mutigers.com/sports/w-baskbl/miss-w-baskbl-body.html)

Why was I visiting their site anyway? Oh...right.. the losing thing. Here's how they became 0-11:

Baylor 90, Mizzou 46
No word yet on whether Mizzou's divorce from the Big 12 has Skeletor as huffy as she is over Texas A&M's divorce. Ewww, plural marriage...

Texas Tech 63, Mizzou 60
Back when Tech was still undefeated. We ended that, then the rest of the Big 12 continued it and now Tech isn't ranked at all. Cheer up, Tech. We totally understand that fall-from-rankings sadness.

KSU 76, Mizzou 42
Who really knows who is good and who isn't in the Big 12. I can't really say "we beat them so they suck," because we are beating everyone except the ranked opponents, and they are sometimes only unranked because we beat them. Gaaahhh, I hate being labeled a "key loss" when they talk about tourney auto bids. :(

KU 72, Mizzou 63
It's not like they only put up a fight against us. It's just that their fightingness is not fighty enough.

A&M 78, Mizzou 52
No word if the 20 fans in attendance were chanting S-E-C! S-E-C! or not.

OSU 62, Mizzou 58
This makes me feel better, that we were not the only ones to break their homecourt hearts when they thought victory was theirs... oh wait, they are traitorous bastards that we want to rot in SEC hell. :P

Whorn 75, Mizzou 58
Mizzou probably spent the entire game begging DeLoss Dodds to reconsider Big Ten membership so that they could beg the Big Ten to be number 14. DeLoss is like "Why am I even here? We have a women's athletic director for a reason? Where the lady that hired Gail G for millions more than necessary? Why did we do that again? Wait a second, I don't care..."

OU 62, Mizzou 59
Somewhere on this blog is a photo of Mizzou's bench celebrating in the closing seconds, thinking that the losing streak that started when conference play did was finally over. Victory is mine! Not yours! MINE! Here it is:
http://media.columbiamissourian.com/multimedia/2012/01/28/media/012812_MUwomensbball_376_t_w600_h1200.jpg

Baylor 71, Mizzou 41
The good news is that everyone inked this in as a loss even if you weren't sucking.

Tech 76, Mizzou 49
You're not even trying anymore, are you? Your hearts are broken, your will is defeated and your energy is spent. And we also already spent your Big 12 exit fees, so please don't stop payment on the check.

ISU 65, Mizzou 42
If you couldn't beat the second-worst Big 12 team at home, you probably have little chance in Ames. Sorry.

OU 100, Mizzou 24
Joanna McFarland breaks out an even more badarse jaw protecting facemask and scores 30 before Sherri's like "OK, 4 minutes is enough playing time for you" and she sends in freshman standout Kay Kay Williams, who promptly picks up three fouls and is sent to the bench, but not before rebounding the ball 20 times, all off of Aaryn "Vegas" Ellenberg three-point misses (Mizzou didn't guard either of them because they were too busy learning to spell "SEC"). Whitney Hand to the rescue, who steals every time Mizzou attempts to inbound the ball and scores easy lay-ups, unless she finds a teammate with an even easier layup (Whitney: "I am only 5-feet something, and Nicole is 6-foot something, so technically, her shot was a few inches closer"). Sherri says "Enough, Whitney, we're only halfway into the first half. Time to empty the bench." So, putting the medical redshirts in danger, Sherri puts in Lyndsey Cloman and Jasmine Hartman to finish out the half, who do nothing but stand center court for a standing ovation from the LNC crowd. Freshmen DeShawn Harden and Sharane Campbell run circles around them scoring and stealing. No idea what Mizzou was trying to do during that time, but it did not appear to be basketball. The buzzer sounds and the Lady Tigers make a beeline for their bus. Sherri to Billy Tubbs in postgame: "I don't think they realized that was just the end of the first half." Billy Tubbs to Sherri: "****ing Mizzou. I once left in the first half against them here, but it wasn't by my choice!"

2 p.m. Saturday.

Totally agree, Badger!!! Mizzou is about the most insignificant D1 athletic program in the country! I'm also not a Pingeton fan after her "family" comment when she was hired but also after last years game in Norman, one of the Tigerettes forearmed one of our players to the ground, and I can't remember if it was a "technical" or "flagrant" foul but the player was running back down the court near Pingeton and she was clapping joyously to that player like "GREAT JOB"!!! So, I hope they loose every game from now on. They probably do stand a good chance to get a win when GiGi and the whorns visit Columbia.

There are very few other ways to describe this game. I set the vBookie point spread at 25, we barely beat completely defeated Mizzou at home this past weekend, and we are about to go up against one of the top teams in the country.

If you are feeling untethered from this season, here's some music:

_CTYymbbEL4

This was apparently what the team had to listen to in practice after escaping with victory over Mizzou. Read more here. (http://www.tulsaworld.com/sportsextra/OU/article.aspx?subjectid=92&articleid=20120213_92_B1_NORMAN70200)

I love the waltz, so I hope it was a good practice.

Normally this is the part of the blog where I trash our upcoming opponent, but my heart just isn't in it today (snowy Tulsa) and since Sherri likes Geno, I probably shouldn't say what I'm usually thinking about the guy, which is, in the most sexist way possible: Geno reflects the whiny girls that he coaches to the media on many occasions.

Full disclosure: I'm a girl, so I'm allowed to say that, hehe.

Soooo... the ones who lurk here are probably disappointed because they were expecting an anti-UConn rant... so I hate to leave you empty handed. Here goes, but once again, I'm not putting any effort into this:

On numerous occasions, Geno has just gone off on the media about how his team is soooooo disrespected because they are women and not men, so their winning streaks, their national championship streaks, their top players, it's all not regarded in the same esteem as other teams.

This, to me, is like Peggy Hill saying matter of factly, "In my opinion, the day after Thanksgiving is the busiest shopping day of the year."

Peggy Hill is one of my least favorite characters on TV.

What Geno is REALLY saying, in a thinly veiled pathetic attempt, is that they are disrespecting HIS accomplishments. And the "his" should be the first tipoff on what direction I'm going with this.

He is, again in the most sexist way possible, getting his panties in a wad because they are not calling him one of the greatest college basketball coaches of all time. Look at HIS team beating the UCLA winning streak that John Wooden's teams set! Look at HIS team winning yet another national championship! Look at HIS team being the No. 1 ranked team in the country for the billionth consecutive week!

Now, I would love women and men to get equal billing like they seem to in pro tennis in the sports media, but Geno getting up in arms because they aren't calling him John Wooden's superior is laughable. UConn fanatics or less sane people might applaud good ol' Geno for coming to the defense of his poor widdle wimmen's team, but here's where it irks me:

Geno is a guy and womens sports is one of the few places where females actually get head coaching opportunities at any level.

A guy like Geno can coach any program he wants (in fact, maybe he should take over UConn's men's program so he can get those grad rates up to a level where they can actually make the NCAA tourney, eh?). The women he's defending are not going to get those same opportunities.

If you want to feel sorry for anyone in college womens basketball, feel sorry for the players that will go from 10k fans at top games down to the barren arenas of the WNBA, the overseas circuit most of the year, or struggle to rise through a college coaching atmosphere where they have to compete with both women and men (like Geno) if they want to continue working in their sport after college. Don't feel sorry for the Genos because he's not getting the same glory and adoration as John Wooden.

So, eff Geno, and eff UConn because they beat us in the 2002 national title game. I was there. And it was a tough loss to take. :(

OK, so that was depressing. Want more waltz time?

So please, mens team, beat Texas. I am surprised that both of our teams have made it this far into conference play and not met Texas yet, but I know that when the Big 12 become ten it probably created schedule weirdness. Ah well.

RECAPS!

55-73

This team really fought hard in this one, despite what the final score says (you have to keep in mind that we are an injury depleted, young team that is unranked going up against the No. 3 team in the country). The refs did a lot to keep us in the game early, with tons of free throw opportunities to shrink the deficit. Alas, we once again fell to our old shooting woe ways and... well.. same ol' song and dance, my friends.

Three-point and overall woes continue: Remember back when it was a given that you could vBet on my "Sooners shoot 50 percent from three" and you'd get a big payout for a low percentage shot? Alas, our percentage last night was 21.4 from three, and just 34.5 percent from the field.

On a positive note: We made 14 of our 18 free throws, which is the same number UConn made (although they only attempted 15 of em).

We lost the turnover battle: For a team that really looked like a ball thiefin' team early on, we only forced UConn to commit 8 turnovers, while committing 15 ourselves. I attribute this to our fast-pacedness, rather than sloppy playness. We were desperate to quickly answer UConn's every shot and to catch them offguard on defense, which worked several times, if only, if only, we could have made some of those shots.

On a positive note: Despite playing against more experienced, more athletic players, we nearly matched them rebound for rebound. They had 40, we had 39.

Let's cut to Sheri. Sherri?

I was very proud of our kids. If there is a tougher player in an America than Whitney Hand, then I don’t know who it is. I wouldn’t trade her for anyone in the country. I had three freshmen that I though just grew up like crazy tonight. I look out there and we have three freshmen on the floor. The ball goes form DaShawn (Harden) to Kay Kay (Williams) to Sharane (Campbell) and we are going toe-to-toe with Connecticut. I am really, really proud of those young guys. But I am not satisfied. It’s never OK, never OK, to lose on your home floor. But, I am proud of the growth that I saw. We found some passion and we found some fighters.

While I felt defeated from even before the game started (you can see my Westminster breaks from game posting in that other thread, hehe), I am also proud of this team's effort. They could have fetal positions when they went down 21-4 early, but they fought back and brought it to within 5 with a minute to go in the first half (then proceeded to give up quick points, arg). This team is learning quickly and I think it will pay off come tourney time. Did I just say TOURNEY TIME?! Yes, there is little doubt in my mind that the third-best Big 12 team, who will possibly be the second-best by the end of the season, is going to get an NCAA bid.

Also, a tribute to the fans from UConn coach Geno, hehe:

It’s a great crowd, great environment. The fans are always unbelievably supportive. The fouls are 10 to 1 in their favor and they are b!tching at the officials. You’ve got to love that.

It really was that lopsided at one point in the first half. It was funny, but even biased badger could see that the refs were really favoring OU at that point in the game, hehe.

Next game: 7 p.m. Wednesday hosting Kansas State. Sh!t, is it that soon already?! I need to get over to vBookie!

Yes, KSU tonight, but rather than preview it (Here's my preview: WE ARE GOING TO WIN, D@MMIT), let's honor our honorable academic all-stars:

Hand and McFarland are all-academic Big 12. (http://www.soonersports.com/sports/w-baskbl/spec-rel/021512aab.html)

I think we usually have a few more, but keep in mind that players need to participate in a certain percentage of games and freshmen are not eligible, so that disqualifies half our roster right away.

Seriously, why do crazy Sooner fans let themselves suffer during games like we all have during these past football and basketball seasons? Well, in any event, the suffering for once paid off, as we turned a deficit into a lead and showed promising signs for the future. We are not perfect and we are probably not a Final Four, Big 12 tourney championship team this year, but we still have much to be happy about.

Vegas finally hits her shots at the best time: Yes, she still had a few bad defensive moments, but when the game was on the line, she hit big shots. She finished with 12 points (11 in the second half), 3 assists and 3 steals.

Whitney Hand plays 40 again: I have no idea how she's doing this. This was our third game in five days. All I know is that the moment Landry starts slacking off in football, she is gonna smack him :D

Kay Kay rebounds: 11 of em in only 21 minutes. Whatever rotation Sherri is doing for post players it appears to be working.

But... anyways, Sherri can probably explain all of this better than I can. Sherri?

Well, once again, I’m really proud of our kids’ resilience and we find ways to win games. That’s pretty important down the stretch and in the months of February and March. It’s pretty important to find ways to grind them out. I thought we did. I thought the folks who were here tonight, not a very big crowd, but the ones who were here really got after it and helped us. And our team needs that. We need a home court advantage. Those folks who were here, I really appreciate their attendance and their involvement and their game giving us juice down the stretch.

Now, now, Sherri --- attendance figures topped 5k. I know it's not as many as were in attendance for UConn, but still, 5k is a very respectable attendance number.

Sherri also addressed the fact that she didn't start Vegas:

“I think that people from the outside, they always make a much bigger deal about who’s standing around the circle at the start of the game then any team does. There were rewards for good play and Sharane Campbell and Kay Kay (Kaylon Williams) have been fantastic. Not just in that they fought in an exceptional way against Connecticut, but their production over the last 5-6-7 games has been really good. And you reward kids for that. Also, there’s some match up things sometimes. With Jelena (Cerina), I thought that they we could have an advantage inside and score. And then with Vegas (Aaryn Ellenberg), you think, ‘What could I do to just make it feel just a little different to maybe get her going again?’ I know one thing for sure: if you keep doing what you’ve always done, you’re going to keep getting what you’ve always gotten.”

Next game: 7 p.m. Saturday @ Iowa State.

I really can't think of anything bad to say about Iowa State. Their fans are passionate, even their students, and their program is down right now, but they were once Sherri's nemesis (even that first Final Four season in 01-02) and they'll be back. Oh, and they are the reason we didn't have to cheer for an SEC team in the national title game. :stunned:

Wait... I can do better than the usual stunned. Just check out this thread.

Hehe... so anyways, in order to dodge weekend chores, and because I'm likely going to miss tonite's game, argh, an update on our season stats:

Tidbits of note:

- Only two players have started all 25 games, Whitney Hand and Morgan Hook.
- Our highest home attended game was Mizzou last weekend, with more than 9k.
- Our highest away attended game was Baylor, with 8400ish.
- Our biggest win was our first, at home against Sacramento State. We scored the most points of any game this season (117) and won by 62 points.
- Our biggest loss was at home against Baylor, by 32 points.
- We have only had one game in overtime, @ Kansas, which we won.
- Our closest win was @ New Mexico, by 2 points.
- Our closest losses were both by 3 points, @ Poke and @ Fresno State.
- The most points any player scored in a single game was 31 by Vegas, @ Kansas State (win).
- The most rebounds any player had in a single game was 16 by Kay Kay @ Missouri (win).

Leading scorer: Vegas, 14.8 ppg. Despite recent scoring slumps and not starting for the first time this season against Kansas State, Vegas had such a hot shooting hand early on that her scoring average is still tops on the team.

Leading scorer in conference games: Whitney, 14.1 ppg. She is without question the team's MVP and it's why Sherri cannot say enough about her leadership, methinks.

Leading rebounder: Joanna, with 7.3 rpg. Not even a broken jaw can take this stat away, hehe.

Honorable mention: Kay Kay, with 6.4 rpg in-conference games only, barely second to Joanna's 6.6 rpg in-conference games only. No wonder Sherri gave her a starting spot recently in Jo's absence.

Free throw leader (overall and in-conference): Whitney, 86.2 percent. No other player is in the 80s range, which is probably why I don't complain as much if we're not getting to the line, hehe.

Blocks leader: Stringbean Nicole, with 45 overall, just 5 shy of 2 per game average. Nobody else is close.

Assist leaders: Whitney (97 overall, 43 in-conference) and Morgan (96 overall, 47 in-conference). That's just shy of 4 per game for both. Everyone else is about half of this or less.

Steals leader: Vegas, with 50 (2 per game average).

Honorable mention: DeShawn. Of her 27 overall steals, 21 have been in-conference. This is just behind Vegas' 27 in-conference.

Minutes leader: Whitney, is there any question? 35.2 overall, 38 in-conference. The only other two to average more than 30 per game are Morgan and Vegas.

Three-point leader: Joanna! Shooting 47 percent overall, and upping that to 52 percent in-conference.

Honorable mention: Sharane, who has an overall 37 percent from three, but in-conference? 47 percent!

Foul leader: Kay Kay, with 64.

Foul-out leader: Nicole, fouling out twice.

Turnover leader: Vegas, with 75.

In-conference turnover leader: Morgan, with 39 (Vegas second with 36)

I got to see part of both games and that was about the downfall, wasn't it?

Sherri's hug and smile at the end of the game was very telling. We would have still won the game had Iowa State clanked a few more of those final minute free throws, because we were scoring on each of our final possessions, then fouling. All we needed was for Iowa State to open the door for us. We had the timeouts saved up to setup scoring plays and just needed Iowa State to clank some free throws... and they didn't.

Sherri's nemesis finally beats us again. They deserved it.

Big game tomorrow with A&M. My family's planning to be there and be very loud.

Ummm, is it proper to chant Big XII, Big XII?

Does it matter much if OU is 2nd or 3rd seed in the Big XII tourney since both still have to play each other if they win their first tourney game? But, I'd still very much like to see OU beat A&M tomorrow and again in Kansas City, a fitting Big XII send off for the defending national champions.

Does anyone project where we will be seated in the NCAA tourney? I guess that we are hoping for a 7 or 8 seed with the first 2 rounds being in Norman. We got our tix on Saturday.

There are so many ways to make fun of Texas A&M. But, quite frankly, who gives a crap.

The all-male, all-stereotyped school that everyone looks at as backwards and silly is going to the conference that everyone else looks at as backwards and silly. I mean, seriously, only one conference's fanbase chants its conference name more than its own school. Tout your AAU status, your increase in revenue and you escaping Texas' shadow. It won't stop people from laughing at you saluting a "five star general" collie, obeying the commands of white-clad hospital orderlies and reading old man debates on whether or not to have female dance team members on a football sideline in front of a block of play-army self squeezing towel wavers reminding everyone what the first letter of the alphabet is.

But... Sherri respects the A&M womens basketball program, so please, have fun in the SEC, aggie.

I decided to lurk at TexAgs to see if there was any typical aggie angst following a loss, and happy to report that their womens basketball fans are a lot less delusional and whiny than their football ones.

They were complimentary of the crowd, our broadcast (see? we're not all Longhorn Network losers in the remnants of the Big 12! sure you don't wanna stay???) and actually didn't complain too much about the refs. They must be used to getting tons of calls against them. Part of the "aggressive play" that Aggie is known for, I guess.

64-55

Like I was saying yesterday during my ranty play-by-play via Android app (a very fun and free download if you have the phone!), you almost feel sorry for Texas A&M, because you see the errors of their basketball ways almost every game via our Sooner mens and women's team. A second half scoring drought to start off with to build enough of a deficit that it's too much to overcome... abysmal shooting that you just can't shake...

But THEN, you remember that this is Texas A&M we are talking about. You know, the team that just won the national title last season? The team that is ranked (either 13 or 14 depending on which poll you like)? The team that we are competing to be second behind almighty Baylor in the Big 12 with? The team that is outta the conference shortly and is S-E-C! S-E-C! bound?

No pity. You suck at shooting, we get lots of ref calls and we get the win at home to tie you for second in the conference behind the top team in the country? Too bad for you, awesomeness for us :D

Top scorer: Aaryn "Vegas" Ellenberg with 23. What a night to find your shot again! Whew.

Honorable mention: Morgan "Le Tre" Hook returns to her own shooting ways with 19, including two threes.

Her foulness, the queen of fouling: Kaylon "Kay Kay" Williams has the same fouling issues that I saw in Joanna McFarland her freshman year, which prompted me to call her "Four Foul McFarland." So, Kay Kay, until you shake your nasty habit of trying to make quick things happen after personal and team mistakes, whether it be over the backing on a missed shot, or hugging a player that just stole an errant pass, you are hereby dubbed "Her Foulness." Now please, no more picking up quick silly fouls. We needed you playing more minutes last night. We could have beaten them by 20 if you did. :(

Assist assistance: Morgan had 5. We would have had more if we weren't so excited at some moments that the passes became errant. Ah well.

The lead changed 10 times, we had to really fight for this one... didn't we, Sherri?

I am very, very proud of our team. I thought it was a complete effort for 40 minutes with attention to the game plan and adapting. We were not really accustomed, when A&M went into a zone (defense). I thought we adapted and regained our aggression after it messed with our rhythm for a little bit. We never got rattled. We just kept making plays and fixed things that were broken in the first half. At halftime they had 14 offensive rebounds and we only gave them five in the second half. That was the difference when we went on the stretch when we could score. I think we went seven or eight possessions that came up empty. We got good shots too. So I just was really proud of our perseverance, attitude and our mindset and our mental focus throughout the entire 40 minutes. I know you guys will ask about it, but the MVP is right here. How much has Morgan Hook grown up between the first time we played A&M and tonight. It looked like a completely different kid.

As long as she mentioned it, we toppled the zone by our middle players going berserko in moving around constantly. No wonder she has to sub out Kay Kay, Jo-Jaw, Stringbean Nicole and Jelina (no nickname sorry... I suppose I could call her "Serbia" hehe) so much. Alas, one of these moments resulted in Nicole getting a nasty elbow to the face that could be seen the rest of the game in the form of a big bruise. OUCH.

I think if you want to talk about signature wins, it is an important one because they are ranked in the top 20 in the country and because they are the defending national champs. But it’s most important because we are tied for second. We are tied for second in the league and we still control our own destiny. That is so important in the conference race; being in the position to control your own destiny. Nobody is going to catch Baylor. But, the rest of us are still fighting for position and we are fighting for seeds in the Big 12 tournament and that is what’s foremost in our mind.

Also, Whitney scored her 1,000th career point a few minutes into the first half, so that was cool too. :)

Next game: 5 p.m. Saturday @ Austin.

25 turnovers and 25-point loss

If you really wanna know more, check the SS.com recap here. (http://www.soonersports.com/sports/w-baskbl/recaps/022512aab.html)

Now usually when we embarrass ourselves to this point, SS.com tries to pretend like there was no postgame (de)press(ion) conference... but a bad loss for us is a good win for someone else, which means that all you have to do is find the opponent's big RAH-RAH fest on their athletic site for the Sherri quotes:

The entire 40 minutes we looked dysfunctional. We didn't play with great intensity. We didn't play with purpose from top to bottom. You can start with a combo of two point guards who turned it over 13 times together, to missed layups on the interior, to Whitney (Hand) going five of 20, or whatever it was. Just top to bottom, inside and out, as poor as we could play.

Oh look! Another Sherri quote!

We're just young, and we don't always understand. Right now, I've got a bunch of guys that are looking around going, "It's February, and we've got how many more games?" They're so young. They haven't been through this grind before. We've played a ton of close games. Everything has been just a slug-fest, and they haven't yet figured out how to be consistent with their energy and their purpose. It's easier to do that a home, I think, and hard to do consecutively. We're struggling with both of those things.

I think we have the 3-seed in the Big 12 tourney now, which really doesn't matter, because in the end, unless Baylor's starting five and Skeletor all get punchy and technical their way out of playing for the Big 12 title and perhaps the tourney... ugggggh.

I've been saying for awhile now that turnovers are OU's main problem. Twenty-five turnovers in a single game is really, really bad. What concerns me heading into the post-season is that they aren't getting any better at limiting turnovers. They will be lucky to make it out of the first round of the conference and national tournaments.

At least Sherri didn't wear white pants like she did at the TAMU game. Doesn't she know it is a fashion fauxpa to where white before April no matter how good they look on her? :adoration:

In other WBB news, I got the impression from the AP story in the local paper that Skeletor and her classy bunch inspired the TexAgs' crowd to be rather "vocal."

(borrowed from ESPN.com)
The crowd of more than 10,000 heckled Baylor, and especially Mulkey, throughout the game, and some fans were still yelling at players as they left the court after the win. Mulkey pumped her fist and smiled as she exited and Griner put her hand to her ear and flashed a thumbs-up on her way out.

The thumbs-up is A&M's "Gig Em" hand signal, but Mulkey denied that Griner meant to mock A&M with her gesture. Griner said winning what could be the last game against A&M didn't mean any more than any other victory.

Yeah, I saw a sizable Corps block in the student section and not a lot of empty seats on the lower level. I think the Aggies fully intended to troll the Lady Bears (if I haven't mentioned it already, I am glad that our team is just the "Sooners!") at College Station last night.

7 p.m. tonight at Texas Tech
TV: Sooner Sports Network via Texas Tech
Oklahoma City: KAUT-TV 43 | Tulsa: COX 3 / 703 HD
Radio: Oklahoma City: KREF 1400 AM

Baj's preview: When we beat them the first time, it was their first loss of the season and they were a top ten team. Now Bracketology has them outta the tournament due to tons of Big 12 losses racked up, a trend WE started, so expect the Lady Raiders to try to get revenge on us... or at least to get a statement out there that they still belong in the tourney talks.

On OU's side, we just need to minimize turnovers and continue making shots. Turnovers are so key on the road, and Texas Tech has a traditionally large, vocal fanbase (that Sherri absolutely loves and once blew a kiss to because the male students were telling her how hot she was or something... I don't remember the specifics of the story) so it will not be an easy task.

If KSU is relegated to the NIT, it will be because of two key losses... to us. No, I gave up getting fast food while at work for Lent... a lot more difficult than it sounds. I decided that I was relying on the convenience of downtown unhealthy options far too much and have resolved to make a more concerted effort to bring in lunch... fruit and soup bowls and such.

But... I happen to have a church activity that coincides with the start of tonight's game, so I'll tune in for the (likely much better) second half... I mean seriously, our first halves on the women's side have SUCKED lately.

It's the opposite for the men... in that case, if you haven't tuned in by the first half, don't bother holding out hope for the second half... even if we win, we'll blow 18-point leads and rely on Poke Choke to hold on, hehe.

The thumbs-up is A&M's "Gig Em" hand signal, but Mulkey denied that Griner meant to mock A&M with her gesture. Griner said winning what could be the last game against A&M didn't mean any more than any other victory.

Sometimes I wonder why SicEm has to plague an OU womens basketball chatter with baylor sh!t... and then I'm reminded what the baylorfans.com forum looks like...

Unable to transform the narrative, in spite of her amazing (revolutionizing) play, Brittney Griner remains an afterthought within the basketball world. Unable to embody the traditional feminine aesthetic and beauty, yet fulfilling the stereotypes usually afforded to Black male ballers, there is little use for Griner within the national imagination. Her greatness is relatively invisible (outside of hardcore sports fans) because she simultaneously fits and repels our expectations for female athletes.

great read... men are pigs.

Is he mad because she won't pose for Playboy or doesn't get a boob job? What a jerk!

So anyways, a big hearty boo-hoo to baylor fans. Sure, you're running the table in the Big 12 now, but we all know that disappointment is just around the corner. You are Baylor, after all.

So anyways... the Sooners won last night. Need I make the score all big and bold and colored and stuff?

71-62

That moment in Jerry Maguire where Sugar mouths and signs "I. LOVE. YOU." for abandoning his top pick long enough for Sugar to sign him before the draft? Yeah, I could do that to Texas Tech.

I love you part 1: Shooting 19 for 64 (29 percent) from the floor. Seriously, LOVE YOU.

I love you part 2: Shooting 4 for 21 from three (19 percent). LOVE. YOU.

I love you part 3: Missing nine free throws (20 for 29, 69 percent). LOVE!

There was much to loathe about OU's effort last night, from the 17 turnovers to the big gooseegg on the steals stat line, to not getting to the free throw line till they were trying to stop the clock... but nothing but LOVE for Texas Tech for basically handing us victory last night on the road.

Tech hates us so much they put this up on their main page:

http://i42.tinypic.com/23h0pxf.png

They couldn't bear to have a shot from the game last night, so they just pretended that we were Texas, I guess. Losses tend to blend together after awhile when they're consecutive, huh? :P

SHERRI! What say you?

"I was really proud of our kids. I thought we really fought and we knew that this Tech team would be ready and that they would be aggressive, and had a lot on the line as we all do in these final conference games. Tech gave us everything we wanted and then some, I thought our kids responded really well. We've been working on responding rather than reacting. I thought we did a nice job of that tonight."

"Well they have been perseverant. That is their greatest character trait at this point. Gosh, I would rather it be three-point shooting, or defensive field goal percentage or rebounding margin, but I am not sure there is a more important character trait than perseverance, truthfully. They are young, they were inexperienced but they aren't so inexperienced now because we have been through this rigorous schedule. But they have just come back swinging whenever anything has happened to them. They want to be coached, that is fun for me, when kids come in and they are sponges and they want to learn. That makes my job pleasant."

What say YOU, Tech coach?

First thing I want to do is thank the crowd for their support, they've just been tremendous all year and I thought we had a tremendous crowd tonight and sent the seniors out the right way but we couldn't get win tonight but I do want to thank the crowd and JB (Jordan Barncastle) and Kierra (Mallard) for all they've done and all they've been about and we're just going to keep playing ball and see were it takes us down the stretch.

Don't sugarcoat it, dear. The crowd stank last night. There were so many bright red empty seats. You would have no idea that this was a top 10, undefeated team a few months ago. We ruined your dream season. I'm sorry.

No I'm not.

Grand finale: 2 p.m. Sunday hosting Kansas. Then, onto the Big 12 tourney in Kansas City.

So... we finish out the regular season hosting Kansas at 2 p.m. Sunday.

SS.com preview (http://www.soonersports.com/sports/w-baskbl/spec-rel/030212aaa.html)

Kansas had a more promising start to their season that almost made it look for awhile that the women's program might finally complement their dominant men's program. However, since KU lost its leading scorer, they have won only a single game in the last five methinks. They even lost at home to the Poke women. Doh ho ho they are screwed.

How screwed? Well, the losses at least have been close, which is why I set the line at 8.5 in our favor over at vBookie. We should win and send our seniors (or rather, "senior." Jelina Cerina, a juco transfer classified as a senior, is our only class-related departure this year. Everyone else is injured or redshirt this or that in the class that we'd normally be sending off this year. So, we get another season of Whitney Hand and Jasmine Hartman).

So hard

to

watch.

It was the perfect afternoon to:

1- Eat outdoors because all of the pansy restaurant goers abowters hogged the indoor seating and it was d@mn nice outside.

2- Help NP assemble furniture. Everything arrives in a big box with mostly assembled pieces... and these little cheap screwdriver-like things so that you don't have to use a real screwdriver.

3- Ignore the game, because it was far too sad to see the ending.

I think Whitney Hand was the only one that was moving fast enough to play offense and defense that game... doesn't she look like she's about to Hulk up here or something?

The weakness of the 2-3 or 3-2 zone... and you guys that have watched the men's team have already seen this many times over, especially in the second halves of games... is the corners of the court. This is where KU seemed to be hitting a majority of their open threes that we were juuuuuuuuust a little bit too slow to defend. Those d@mn corner shots were always open when we were in zone, and it happened frequently to the men's team. :(

The good thing is that it is one of the most difficult shots to make... the bad thing is when a team actually hits them. Let's fret over the stats, shall we?

8 of 18, 2 of 10: Guess which one is KU's three-point shooting stat and which one ours is.

21 of 25, 21 of 30: Guess which one is KU's free throw shooting stat and which one ours is.

Our saving grace could have been the fact that KU was in abysmal foul trouble late in the second half, which brought us to the line a lot and also stopped the clock a lot. Alas, they made their free throws and we didn't, they made their shots and we didn't, they sealed the deal and we let them hit threes. Hey look! Nascar's on!

Sherri?

“I thought Kansas played incredibly inspired and we didn’t. We were as flat as could be. We knew what was on the line, we knew what was at stake and I can’t explain it. I wish I could. Ultimately when a team comes out and doesn’t play inspired it is on the head coach. So, I have to do a better job.”

In other words, Sherri will channel her inner Darth Vader in practice and say "Perhaps I can find new ways to motivate them."

However, just like the evil empire can just build another Death Star lah dee dah, we didn't have to earn the second seed after all:

Instead of winning the No. 2 seed outright, OU and Texas A&M finished up in a tie for second place in the Big 12, and were deadlocked on the first four tiebreakers. A drawing was held and OU ended up in the No. 2 spot.

Winning is soooo overrated. :P

Next game: I dunno. I'll post it later.

At least they found a way to lose besides turnovers. 21-30 from the free throw line is suckage. 70% free throw shooting for a women's BB team is like batting .200 in MLB. It's below the Mendoza line.

Oh, and letting the other team shoot almost 50% (8-18) from 3-point range ain't good, but this wasn't the first time the girls have allowed that.

They play the winner of the OSU-Mizzurah game Thursday at 5PM and if they don't get their proverbial poop together they will be on their way home by 10 PM. I hope that doesn't happen.

I've been too afraid to call me mom after that game. I know that she and the rest of my family were there. I'm in Thailand and didn't get any TV or internet coverage from the game and I'd hate to have to listen to some pretty heart-wrenching, reality stuff from them. My family is not t-shirt fans, but homers. They got tixs to the first 2 rounds of the NCAA tourny in Norman. They will also ordered their season tixs next year and I hope to be there.

Forgetting Mizzou:

What a tale of two halves, and unlike the men's team, we came alive in the second half, which usually works out better.

- We were down 10 at the half. I thought Sherri was going to cry. We were not defending the three and therefore, we were letting Mizzou hit a lot of threes.

- We won by 11. You can thank Sharane's last-second runner if you vBookie'd the 10-point spread.

- Mizzou couldn't make a 3 to save their life in the second half. HahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaLOLOLOLOLOLOLOOLOL OLOLOL

- Mizzou had relied too much on Flores and the three and both were failing them in the second half. Extreme lulz at Flores for trying to fake fouls left and right, especially a flop versus Kay Kay when she rolled in for an easy two. No, screaming "AHHHHHH!" and falling backwards quickly does NOT always warrant an offensive foul, you big wussy.

- Make some damn free throws, girls! And some threes too, please. The only reason we won the second half was because Mizz stopped making their threes (thank you, defense) and not because we suddenly came alive at either line (free or three).

- Our turnover stat of 8 is quite acceptable, but don't expect the Aggies to be as easy.

- KU put up a fight against A&M. Perhaps they'll be all tired and we can get a win against them that way? Who am I kidding, we had a tough game as well. And part of that is having a first round bye and the other team still all fired up from a first round win in this Big 12 tourney format.

Next game: 2:30 p.m. today versus Texas A&M. Book it over to vBookie for your vBetting fun.

Someone please keep me updated about the OU-A&M game starting at 2:30pm today (3:30am Saturday my time). I'll try to find streaming audio, but I'm not sure that I can get it. Okay, I'm gonna be listening internet audio of Oklahoma and Boomer Sooner until someone helps me out.
