Game Story

NORMAN, Oklahoma (Ticker) -- Josh Heupel continues to put up
impressive numbers.

One week after setting a school record for career touchdown
passes, Heupel passed for 346 yards as the 16th-ranked Sooners
held off upset-minded Kansas, 34-16, in the Big 12 Conference
opener for both schools.

The senior signal-caller completed 29-of-43 passes, including a
22-yard TD toss to Andre Woolfolk in the fourth quarter. He also
rushed for a one-yard TD in the first quarter.

It was the 11th 300-yard passing game for Heupel, who has 408
completions, 12 shy of Cale Gundy's school record.

"Coming into the game, we knew that they were going to be a good
football team defensively and had a great secondary," Heupel
said. "We took it as a challenge, but basically we went into it
with the same attitude as every game. We just try to execute our
stuff and if we do that, then we will be successful."

Perhaps caught looking ahead to next week's showdown against
Texas, Oklahoma (4-0, 1-0 Big 12 South) fell behind, 16-10, in
the second quarter. But the Sooners responded with 24 unanswered
points to win going away.

"Nobody panicked," Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops said. "Even in the
first half, what we were doing was right. We just broke down and
(their) quarterback had some big plays. The second half was
better. We had more discipline and we covered better."

Oklahoma's defense dominated after giving up two touchdowns in
the first quarter, intercepting Kansas quarterback Dylen Smith
five times and sacking him six times.

The Sooners were held to just 98 yards on the ground with
Quenton Griffin rushing for 55 yards on 14 carries. But Oklahoma
used the passing game and its defense to improve to 4-0 for the
first time since 1993.

"I feel like we calmed down," said Oklahoma cornerback J.T.
Thatcher, who had two interceptions. "We came in at halftime and
asked coach some questions about different coverages."

Smith completed 12-of-29 for 258 yards, including a 77-yard TD
toss to Roger Ross early in the first period.

Kansas (2-2, 0-1 Big 12 North) grabbed a 16-10 lead on Joe
Garcia's 49-yard field goal 3:45 into the second period before
the Sooners answered with two touchdowns in a 4:10 span late in
the quarter to take a 24-16 halftime lead.

Griffin put the Sooners ahead for good with a 12-yard TD run
with seven minutes left in the half before Antwone Savage ripped
off a 40-yard TD scamper with 2:50 to play.

Tim Duncan booted a 39-yard field goal 6:49 into the third
period before Heupel completed the scoring with his TD pass to
to Woolfolk with 3:59 remaining in the fourth quarter.

"Josh was excellent," Stoops said. "There's no question. We're
very proud of him. I told our players coming into the week that
things weren't going to be easy. We needed to keep our poise and
keep playing. Josh did that."

The Sooners took a 3-0 lead on Duncan's 37-yard field with 12:15
left in the first quarter, but the Jayhawks needed just two
plays to go up, 6-3, on Smith's 77-yard TD pass to Ross 52
seconds later.

Heupel's short TD burst gave Oklahoma a 10-6 edge, but the lead
continued to seesaw as Kansas answered again on David Winbush's
29-yard TD scamper with 3:05 left in the first.

"There are things during the game that didn't go our way and we
had to show toughness and play well," Heupel said. "We needed
this game today. We needed some tough times just to react and
prepare for the rest of the conference season."

Oklahoma snapped a three-game losing streak against Kansas and
increased its lead in the all-time series to 63-27-6.
