I would put both bands in a pile with weezer and 3 doors down and set the whole pile on fire...

I like both bands, but I give the nod to the Gin Blossoms. Their songs have a polished, happy feel to them, but their lyrics are pretty depressing and dark. I love the dichotomy. New Miserable Experience is one of the better albums of the '90s, IMO.
