Time of possession

OU: 22:07
UT: 37:54

When a team has the ball for more than 1/4 longer than you do - you normally don't win by 38 points.

Actually I don't know what normally happens - I just made that part up.

Check out the time of possession stat of the OSU vs KU game. Very lopsided in favor of Kansas.

hawaii 5-0

When your Offense consistently gets a short field, you only take a few plays to score, or use a hurry-up offense Time of Possession isn't an important stat.

A key stat yesterday was Turnover Margin.

5-0

The most misleading stat in this game was this:

Texas - total offense 259

A big chunk of that was late in the game, with the outcome not in question.

Is there a least misleading stat?

Is there a least misleading stat?

Attendance? Temperature at kick off maybe? No, probably not.

Commentators have said for years... it doesn't matter how much time you possess the ball, it's what you do with it when you have it.

I remember during the FSU game when there was about 5 1/2 minutes to go and we were up by 7 thinking, I'd like to burn about 5 minutes then at least kick a field goal. Then I thought, this offense will never burn 5 minutes... they'll have been stopped on downs or scored long before then.

Without checking, I'd be surprised if OU has lead in time of possession in any game this year, and doubt they will in any game the rest of the year for that matter.

We talked about this during the game. When the defense scores after their offense had the ball for 3 or 6 minutes and turn around and get the ball right back. Then say they run another 3 or 6 minutes off the clock. There would be 6 to 12 minutes that OU's offense was resting. That can help boost up the numbers.

Those 3 defensive TD probably took 30 seconds total. And do they even count that in time of possession? In a weird way, those defensive TDs took away from our numbers on offense. Each time, we restarted the horns with a new possession with a KO. No, I'm not complaining :) But we probably top 500 yards otherwise.

We definitely should count the INTs and fumbles.

A study has shown that 67% of quoted statistics are made up on the spot.

The most important stat is the final score: OU 55 - Whorns 17

Defensive Points off turnovers = OU 18 + 3 PAT (no clock)

As was previously stated, those 3 Defensive TD's took less than 30 seconds off the game clock time. Probably about 20 secs.

Additionally, TX rushed the ball 45 times to OU's 19. That contributed to more TOP.

You can get lost in pure stats. TOP doesnt tell you much about quality, just quantity.

I personally didn't want OU to have possession for very long. Watching that defense was incredibly entertaining.
